Just a warning to everyone on ebay gift cards: I sent a present of 2 ebay gift cards to my sister. She proceeded to create an ebay account and then tried to use the gift cards. Ebay froze the gift cards (for no reason other than it was being used on a new account) and is now demanding she send in proof of purchase. One of the gift cards was a digital gift card and they want a copy of the email confirmation which I don't have anymore since I always delete that from my email for security purposes. I can't believe they are allowed to get away with stuff like this.
Check your trash folder. Emails hang around for a while.

It is reported revenue, not income. Even if you just file as an individual, this does not mean you owe tax on the revenue. What it does mean is your recording and documentation burden has gone up. You can offset the revenue with your costs. Unfortunately it could mean you chance of audit went up (unsure but the general concern by some) and your need for keeping records by transaction for what your costs were is now needed.
No, I don't owe taxes on the revenue but I will have to explain it away on my taxes. Which means that I will have to file Schedule C again and collect all the paperwork that goes with it, which is a ginormous PITB. I did a Schedule C for years and years (I had an Amazon Marketplace business) and I hated it. It was a real relief when I stopped selling on Amazon and I didn't have to file for my business any longer. I sold over $3K worth of Cubs tickets last year for our little group of 3 people who share the seats and the seats are not even in my name! I just took over the duty of selling them for the group.

I have had 100% success by checking out via PayPal. I know others have reported the same success so I would say it is fairly reliable. I would not say it is certain, but in my experience, it has always worked.
Thanks! I just ordered $400 worth of cards on ShopDisney via RMN using PayPal (connected to my 2% credit card) and I'll report back if the reward goes through.

Are they doing it for Venmo too?
Yes, All third party processors. Paypal, Venmo, Zelle. The law states payments for "Goods and services" over $600. When you selects payments you can select - "Friend transfer" or "payment for Goods and Services". If you are getting to Paypal through a web portal from a commercial site it automatically goes to the goods and services selection. If you are using the app, you can pick. The "goods and services" selection gives the "buyer" some protection and has a fee associated with it. The "friend transfer" has no protection and is usually fee free. The issue is, in the past Paypal and Venmo have both sometimes classified "friend transfers" as income, which should not be the case. We will have to wait and see how well they follow the distinction and how all this plays out when folks get the 2022 1099's in 13 months.

Thanks for the clarification. I don’t think I will go over that next year. And the only reason I did go over this year was from renting DVC points which I hope to use myself from now on. Still it was good being able to rent them when we couldn’t go last year.

This brings up another item people are going to need to track and document. (And make sure it is reported correctly on your taxes). In the past, only the US based rental companies (key exclusion is David's) gave you a 1099 for the rental income. David's did not give you a 1099, but you still should report in income (that's another question). Now, if you rent through a US company, like DVC Rental, are they going to give me a 1099 AND since I get the money comes through a 3rd party processor, are they going to give me and additional 1099 for the exact same revenue (money)? Everyone is going to need to track and document all this stuff and make sure it is right on your taxes.

Another RMN experience to report...

I needed to buy $500 in Disney Gift Cards to finish paying my DVC annual dues and I wanted to use my RedCard to get the 5% discount. I happened to check the RMN app first and saw that there was a 1% rebate listed for Target. It's not much, and I figured it would not even track since all I purchased was the e-gift card...but it did! I paid with my RedCard and I just received an e-mail from RMN saying that my $4.75 is pending in my account. I will update if it ends up getting rejected, which is highly likely, but I was surprised to see that it even went to pending status. If it actually credits, I will be very pleasantly surprised...stay tuned....

How long did it take to go pending? I put an order in last night and it still hasn't gone pending... Lol, high anxiety.

I'm curious how it would work with rebate stuff like RMN and Rakuten. I always have them pay out to paypal, but I don't think cash back should be taxable, but how would you document that.

Anyone else have the egift cards go pending on the Disney order status page? No emails of the cards and I keep checking the order status and it keeps saying pending. Used Paypal since that seems to work with RMN, per feedback here. Any chance the order will finally go thru??

This is a ginormous PITB for eBayers and for people like me who rent out my DVC points. I also sell my extra Cubs season tickets on StubHub in excess of $600 and Stubhub pays out via PayPal. I really hope I don't get a 1099-K for those sales or I'll have to jump though a bunch of hoops because I DO NOT make a profit from them.
I believe DVC is considered a second home.

StubHub is going to start sending them also, I got an email this morning.

Doctor of Credit has a nice post about this. Time will tell, but there is genuine concern about how the IRS views this as well as how the 3rd party processors will code them. In general "miles (unless you can turn them into cash) and "rewards" that are proportional to spending are not generally thought to be taxable (IRS has a few statements on this a few years ago), but "bonuses" - things like sign up your friends or open an account are generally viewed as income. That's the high level thoughts. Now there have been cases when banks and cc, have not followed this and sent out 1099's for rewards. Additionally, if these are coming through 3rd party processors, now both the bank/cc and the 3rd party processor would need to make sure it is coded to avoid being viewed as income. Since the reward is coming from a commercial operation and being paid through a 3rd party processor, it will be surprising if it is coded as a friend and family transfer. I have seen several posts that believe if you get over $600 in total from all rewards from a single service, expect to get a 1099. So if RMN gives you 301 through paypal and Rakuten gives you 300 through Paypal, expect Paypal to give you a 1099 for $601. Then on your taxes you would need somehow classify it as a reward, not as income, which may be difficult. Some are considering going to bank transfers instead of Paypal, which A: is riskier from an identity perspective and B: let's your spouse see your "mad money" (per some posts not me of course). Again... we'll find out in 13 months.

What a pain. Glad things could be made more difficult for "normal" people in an attempt to catch up others.

I ordered $400 yesterday via RMN using PayPal. I have not received my cards yet either…

I ordered a $100 eDGC and two items at shopDisney yesterday (Monday) thru RMN (12%) and with PayPal. Received the eDGC in less than an hour and the two items are in the shipping process. Uncannily fast for The Mouse. Received the RMN email that shopDisney reported the transaction and a cashback date of 2/10.
