wikipedia is my friend
The practice of tea leaf reading originated independently in Asia, the Middle East and Ancient Greece. Scotland, Ireland, and England have produced a number of practitioners and authors on the subject, and English potteries have crafted many beautiful tea cup sets specially designed and decorated to aid in fortune-telling. Cultures of the Middle East that practice divination in this fashion usually use left-over coffee grounds from Turkish coffee turned over onto a plate.

I got kabob for dinner today for me and my bf. I ordered it to go and went to pick it up. I walk in and I see two employees staring intently at small tea cups. I'm wondering what the heck they are doing and they are speaking in arabic. They were "studying" the tea leaves. It immediately made me think of Harry Potter & Professor Trelawney's divination class! :teeth:

Maybe they were waiting for the tea leaves to tell them which one's turn it was to spit into the kabob?

I've never seen a Middle Easterner do it, either. But on TV (which always mirrors real life, ya know), it's always a Chinese person. Or a dingbat white woman. :rotfl:
