Union may file a greivance against an Eagle Scout for taking their jobs* WITH AUDIO

As far as the value of a job - that debate could go on and on. How valuable is your job - or mine, if it can be sent to Asia for 1/4 of what we're making here? Do you want to find out? I sure don't.

Not much of a debate really is it?

Taxpayers pay union workers vs. Free

Free wins every time, no?

No, not every time, its another blanket generalization. There are a lot of instances where "free" is not actually free.

Not necessarily. Not if the unemployment rate continues to go up, up, up.

BTW my post is meant to be economical in nature, not political - I'm not sure what the scope of political is on the DIS.

What is that supposed to mean?
Could you elaborate?
How are people supposed to be paid for work done for free?

Why has this thread deteriorated into boy scout vs union worker? If you have a boy scout in your family, good for you. If you have a union member in your family, good for you as well. NO organization has members that are all good - or all bad! Geez people ...

Wasn't that the entire point of the thread? :confused3 Look at the thug union members picking on the boy scout.

And the SEIU is trying to save face......

SEIU spokesman Matt Nerzig called Balzano's comments "completely unauthorized and insensitive" and said the union was "not at all" considering a grievance in this case.

Last winter, we had a very bad ice storm. This spring, I was part of a group of trail users who got together to help out the park, town & state clean trails of downed trees and branches. We made a huge difference. The parks were aware we where there. It was organized. And they met up and provided anything else we might need that we didn't have. We provided man-power. And lots of it.

This summer, I was on other trails in another town where no one had done anything. :sad2:

When resources are low, they are very thankful for volunteers, because trails don't seem like a priority to some people. Roads & services that everyone use come first.

putting food on the table.

Hm, i don't know many boys age 10-18 that "put food on the table" maybe a couble of bucks for gas money.

For your information, scouting is all about respect, responsibility and leadership.

On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my Country and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

Teaching this to boys, and helping them live up to it, will actually help them put food on the table.

A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Your right....just a hobby

In order to attain eagle, and starting with tiger, a boy will complete thousands of individual requirements that make up rank and badges. They will spend hours and hours on service projects. They will spend nights and nights camping and fending for themselves. They will learn to take care of the environment, they will learn to fend for themselves and to help others. They will learn how to cook, clean, and save themselves. They will learn to save their father. http://www.rd.com/your-america-inspiring-people-and-stories/shipwrecked/article28004.html The book is black wave.

who does the father credit....his son's scout troop.

From the article.....

Balzano said Saturday he isn't targeting Boy Scouts. But given the city's decision in July to lay off 39 SEIU members, Balzano said "there's to be no volunteers." No one except union members may pick up a hoe or shovel, plant a flower or clear a walking path.

sad

Well, for putting food on the table,

Other than training young men and woman in

Gardening
Fishing,
Fly Fishing
Rifle shooting
Shotgun
Soil and water conservation
Plant science
Oceanography
Mammal study

and providing literally tons of food to food banks around the globe,
your right
Actually, it did put food on my table and still does... Scouting is where I learned to cook!

My son will be having a blast celebrating at the National Jamboree next July/August! I'm probably more excited for him than he is. :rotfl:
He should have a blast with his "hobby" at AP Hill... I faxed in the paperwork yesterday, it looks like I'll be on Staff again for the Jambo, but this time I'll be working concessions in Trading Post "C" instead of working in a subcamp. This will be my third Jambo on Staff. I was a contingent leader in '93 and '97 for our Council. Before being "official", I visited Jambos in '77, '81, and '89.

No, it doesn't take much. My mom, who teaches at a university has a great example of this notion. Her secretary filed a form to have a university worker come hang a picture in her office. After several weeks passed, she gave up and brought in a hammer and a small nail and hung it herself... big mistake. A few days later a union worker noticed the picture on the wall and asked "Who hung that?" She admitted doing it. The next thing she knew the union had dispatched a worker to remove the picture and nail, patched and painted the hole... and filed a grievance. So, no, it often doesn't take much!

Hmmm... I have one of those illegal hammers in my office. Though our workers react the same way to illegally hung frames, they're not union. It must be a handyman thing.

On another note unrelated to PP quoted, it's fascinating to see how political debate has been transformed on the DIS.

The city of Allentown = the citizens of Allentown

Should the citizens have to pay union wages for a job that could, well is in fact, done for free?

That is what I am thinking. If my city wants to allow a volunteer to do something instead of pay someone to do it I say let them volunteer. I am the one paying for it and I want free.

They're not going after the Eagle Scout, they're following their own procedure in filing a grievance with the city because the city laid them off and allowed volunteers to do what they used to get paid to do.

Good for the city. I wish my city would do the same and save me some tax dollars.

I loved that story about hanging a picture. I used to work in a building that wouldn't allow you to change a light bulb or plunge a toilet. You had to call a union person to do it. What a waste. I am capable of doing either of those things and would rather just do it myself for free than pay someone to do it. Luckily I am at a place now that actually supports us doing for ourselves instead of waiting for someone else to do it.

I commend the scouts. If more people volunteered to do these kinds of things we wouldn't have to hire so many people to do it and pay for it with out tax dollars.

I don't think it makes anyone pro or anti union. I can only speak for myself and say I would feel the same if non-union laborers were replaced by volunteers. It is a question of being pro or anti paying for something you can get for free or paying someone to do something you can just as easily do yourself.
