Uncomfortable Ads

I understand that that's what young children might think it means but it is a teacher's job to correct them, is it not? The reason they think it means "beautify" is because of shows like Pimp My Ride. When they pimp a car, it means that they make it look like something a pimp would ride, as someone else has already explained. That's not exactly "beautifying" it.

So when a teen girl gets her AMC Gremlin on that show and her car comes out white and yellow with green carpet inside it's supposed to look like that so she can be a pimp? :rotfl:

Like I said before, the word lost its meaning years ago...it's not even the same word to most rappers anymore, its another term for "player"

Ok I don't have a problem with the "pimp your signature" thing, I think we have MTV to thank for that word being used to "glitz up" things.

A lot of the other adds that showed up recently do bother me. The ones for tattoos, bathing suits and others that feel somehow inappropriate. I wish they could do something about that.

Ones for Disney, cruise lines, vacations, etc..... don' bug me.

Now that I mentioned tattoos and bathing suits, guess what adds you are going to be seeing on this page?????

It is ironic that is someone was pasting the images (and in some cases words) in the adds in posts they most likely would be banned, but since they are paying adds, it is fine. :confused3

Interesting point.

Yes, she is getting her car all glammed up. Think 70s.

Hey, I've already said I'm not offended by the word. I don't think we have to change it's meaning, though, for it to be unoffensive. I don't see how the original meaning is "disgusting". What they do may be disgusting but the word itself is just a label that they are identified with.

OP here, and I still find it disgusting just like I find the title of the show on MTV or whatever disgusting. I must be old fashioned, but I surely wouldn't want my 14 yr old son to use that word. If he does, he sure doesn't use it around me.

What was really bad, was when I hit page two of this thread, what did I see on the top of the thread? You got it. Blank my profile. DCL here I come.

I had a teacher in high school that would freak out if anyone said the word "suck". As in "I've got 5 hours of homework tonight." "Oh, that sucks."

I went to a christian school during my early years and about 3rd grade we had a substitute teacher once who gave us a ton of homework...

then one of the students said "GEEZ!" to which the teacher was mortified saying "You can't say that! That's like using Jesus' name in vain"...

...to which ALL of us replied "noooo, it's short for Gee-Whiz"....the teacher was quiet after that.

No I dont think its a teachers job to explain that to young children, its how kids speak to each other today. They are not meaning it to be something bad at that age. Thats how it is. Do I think its great for kids to be saying it, no I dont but there is nothing thats going to be done to stop it, its harmless.

Remember that Elvis use to shake those devil hips so offensively they would not show him from the waste down on ed sullivan either. ;) :)

Well, I disagree. I think a teacher is supposed to form and shape children. So if they are using a phrase incorrectly or inappropriately, the teacher should speak up. I mean, the F word is a common part of our culture nowadays but I wouldn't expect a teacher to sit by while a child said it. I don't think the teacher necessarily had to explain the meaning of "pimp", depending on the age of the children, but definitely they should tell the child that they are using that word incorrectly or inappropriately.

I totally agree with that :)

Seeing the word "pimp" on a website doesn't bother me a bit.

It's actually kind of a cute word, pimp.

I don't get offended easy, I think life is too short. I did get offended a couple of years ago though at a commercial for a popular sit-com. The commercial aired during one of the tween shows.

Setting:

Two women and a man were standing in a room. One woman said to the other one "Get out of my way or I am going to have S** right through you. :scared1: (I edited for DIS.) I thought that was not only repulsive, but a bit much.

The meaning of the word Pimp has evolved. While a lot of you (generic you) may not like it, the fact is that it now means cool, tricked out, hot etc. Therefore the teacher can't tell the child they are using the word incorrectly or inapproprately, because the child wasn't. Things used to be "Cool", then they were "Hot", now they are "Pimp".

It's a word. If you don't want your child using it, tell them. Because when it come down to "forming and shaping" children, that is your job first and foremost. Teachers teach, parents form, mold and shape.

I also think the Viagra ads cross the line, as well as many personal hygiene commercials, etc. Just because some people are very liberal and explain all this to their children doesn't mean everyone should be forced to do so. Cable TV is one thing; you pay for it. But to have all this brought into my living room without my consent really gets to me.

vent over

Okay, I tried to let this go, but I just couldn't do it... talking about personal hygeine products is "very liberal"? Really? This is part of life. And this is the kind of thinking -- that anything that has anything to do with what's under your clothes is "naughty" -- I thought we left behind a loooooonnnngg time ago.

If they're really little kids, watching kids programming, those kind of ads won't come on, anyway... And even still, if a tampon ad comes on tv, do kids really ask what it's about? I know I never did, my niece never did, and nor did the kids I was responsible for when I was a nanny.

ok, now my vent is over, too. I'm sorry, I just had to get that out of my system.

Sex isn't dirty. Prostitution is degrading to women. Using words that refer to prostitution as a "cute way to say glitter it up" is assinine. Prostitution is an act of a desperate woman and should not be "glittered" up.
