Uncomfortable Ads

I posted on the Dead Mouse thread and at the top of the page there was an ad for adding glitter to your signature. It said Click here to customize. Only they didn't call it glitter. It was X My Profile. With two pink hearts on both side of the ad and letters on the heart.

Am I the only one who thinks if we used that four letter word (the X above) on the DIS, it would get blanked out with ****'s? Am I the only one who finds it disgusting???

Words seem to take on other meanings than the traditional ones we are accustomed to. If you look the word up on urban dictionary, I think definition 7 describes what they are intending. What will kids think up next to shock the old people.

Are you referring to "pimp"? That term lost all of its original meaning years ago...now it's another word for "make good looking".

Glad you figured it out Chris. The only ads I ever see are the Dreams Unlimited ones and I wondered what word they were referring to.

Yes, Pimp My Profile would be along the line of phrases such as the titles of the TV shows Pimp My Ride or Trick My Truck.

Its defiantly taken on a new meaning and is very mainstream now, all it means is to make look better, I certainly can understand how you would see it if you were not paying attention to mainstream culture. Sometimes I wish I didn't LOL. All in all its very acceptable in todays society , totally lost its meaning of old with the younger generation today!

It doesn't bother me in the least! I actually had no idea what word the OP was referring to until someone posted it. The phrase "pimp my ____" is used a lot now.

Pimp. This word got my 11 yr old daughter in so much trouble at school a couple months ago. So, her class is in the music room and the music teacher had decorated for Valentines day and my daughter says, "this room is pimp". The teacher yells, "who said that?" My daughter raises her hand. They're taken back to their classroom and she tells dd's teacher what she said.
DD's teacher goes on to tell the whole class what a PIMP is! What?! She comes home from school and asks me if we know what a pimp is. Before I can even answer she proceeds to tell me "well, it's a man who has a group of women that he sells for sex and he gets the money"! And no I wasn't there, but her teacher's side of the story matched my daughter's take on the whole thing.
It's just funny to me because I'd never heard her say the word pimp before and when she said it she meant "this room looks cool".

I don't think that it's offensive even to use the real use of the world. I don't know too many synynoms for a pimp. What he does for a living might be disgusting but actually using the word to describe him is no more disgusting than using the word prostitute.

I hate the ads with like teen girls in swimsuits. I feel like I'm looking at child porn on my computer...

They just seem really odd to have here.

I hate the huge swimsuit ads too! They are definitely a little conspicuous while I'm at work. If someone glanced over, who knows what they would think!

Apparently I'm supposed to keep my children away from any and ALL media nowadays if I don't want them to see/hear/read something inappropriate. My kids are 7 and 10, and I DO NOT want to have to explain a viagra commercial. And yet we almost did because DH thought it would be cool to watch a baseball game- a DAY game, 1pm... HELLO?!?!

Why is this now acceptable? Why do you (not you- the generic you) think that KIDS need to know this stuff?? Please don't give me freedom of spreech, press, etc... I think there's a time and place. And lately the time and place seem to be everywhere, anytime. So if I think explaining a pimp to a CHILD is inappropriate- I'm behind the times...
I swear, DH is gonna find an island somewhere, and we're gonna start our own country... crazy people need not apply for citizenship....
