Uncomfortable Ads

I use the Swan Dolphin theme, only S/D ads (easy on the eyes) on the boards not with a specific sponsor, and no Google garbage ads. If on Theme park, it is a TGM theme, Transportation, some limo company, etc.

As for the OP's original thoughts, I think the word usage is part of the MTV 'education' kids get today, my recalling it from when the kids were home here.

I really think teachers should keep up with the kids trends and such, watch mtv every now and again, go to urbandictionary.com, thats rediculous that the teacher did that , honestly think its pretty out of line. If you are going to work with kids, learn there language.

I'm a teacher, and I make sure to let the kids know that the words they use so freely have negative connotations. We do study denotations and connotations, so it's a good lesson. I might not spell it out for them, and my kids are older, but yeah, if they're going to use the word, they need to know how it orginated.

The whole process is bothersome.

The term originally means to sell women for sex.

In the "gangsta" culture, a pimp is cool, so pimp becomes synonymous for cool.

Mainstream thinks the gangsta culture is fun, so then pimp=cool is mainstream. It's not appropriate to me because of the connotation.

The term tight is another example. Tight= something really good. Why is it so good to be tight? Hmmm, wonder how that term came about. :scared1:

Thats exactly the point that some posters are missing, the word can mean that yes, but it has evolved into meaning clean up, look fresh, make something old new, beautify it.

THAT is what they kids are meaning when they say pimp, nobody is arguing about what a pimp is , in TODAYS young culture and just plain culture period this word as EVOLVED into meaning beautify, make pretty.

NOTHING about this has any reference to prostitutes and pimps, its a NEW definition.

You certainly dont have to like it, or let your kids even say it, but to keep arguing its the pimp and prostitute meaning is THE ONLY way to look at this is not excepting cultural changes , its just not the case these days.

If your child asks whats it mean to pimp my notebook, its to make it look cool, its nothing to do with prostitutes and telling your kids that is only going to confuse the heck out of them.

If my child asked me to pimp her notebook, I would have a serious talk with her. Sure, she means to make it look cool. I'd explain the meaning of the word. Does nobody understand that the REASON pimp=cool is because of the glofication of the pimp in urban society?

Exactly, according to my teenage son. Like I said, the older kids know exactly what it means and the reason they use the word is because of the gangsta lingo.

No one here answered, but is it ok that the kids tried to start a trend of calling their girlfriends their "bitc***"? To them, it now means their girlfriends are hot. But gee I wonder where they got that idea? Perhaps from the CDs with the Parental Advisorys stickered on them?

Our younger kids don't know and don't understand, but a degrading, gansta language is pervading society. Just because they're just words doesn't make them acceptable.

But I don't tell others how to raise their kids. I just know my kids are being taught this is not cool, and I tell them not to try to tell me "but mom, it doesn't mean that anymore". Nice try, but I'm no sucker.

By the way, NYBlue1, I do appreciate the civil way you state your opinion. I really appreciate that. And I respect it, even if I don't agree. Thank you.:thumbsup2

That's not how my teen son describes it...as cleaned up, looking fresh, making something old new. He and his friend they described it as snazzing it up, making it "sharp", bad-a**, flashy, standing out in a crowd, etc. he laughed when I used the words "cleaned up" and "fresh". Well, his idea of making it look fresh isn't what I suspect your idea is. His and his friends definition of fresh is "shocking".

I think we're being suckered into the younger idea that pimping your ride has a wholesome meaning, but it does not. The poor youger kids don't have a clue, but the teens know EXACTLY what they mean, and it ain't as innocent as they make us believe it is. And we live in NYC, so I'd say we're in the know as it's VERY common here.

I think we are not understanding each other :) I said YOUNGER kids think it means to be nice , new whatever else I said. I know the teens know exactly what it means , but young kids are not using it that way. Still no reason for a teaching to tell young kids what a pimp is really. (I live in NY myself, not the city but about 20 minutes north my entire life till last year, trust me the suburban kids want nothing more then to pretend they are the urban kids and do everthing in their power to emulate the worst , Im also in a business that keep up with those kinda things.:) :

Thank you! And congratulations on being a teacher, a heros occupation in my book!:) If you had a young group of kids would you do what the teacher the posted about did?

I will not let my kids speak that way ever, and they will know its not acceptable. My point was just trying to expalin the evolution of the word. You sound like a smart mom , im sure teacher as well!

Keep up the good work!:)

I understand, I agree with you, I would have a talk with my child too, just trying to point out that the kids , the younger ones, totally think its just to make cool.

The meaning of the word Pimp has evolved. While a lot of you (generic you) may not like it, the fact is that it now means cool, tricked out, hot etc.

No, the meaning of the word hasn't changed at all. Look in any reliable dictionary. All that has happened is that a new slang word has emerged.

It's not that it is dirty or naughty but it is private. Call me crazy but I don't want the whole world knowing about when I have my period. DD has a 13 yo friend who is a boy--well she has several but this one comes to our house. I don't enjoy sitting on the couch with this kid and having to watch a stupid commercial about Have a Happy Period and neither does my DD. (Nor I am sure does her friend! Poor kid lives with just dad so we are the only girl stuff he has to deal with anyway!) I also have a major problem with the underwear ads on TV. I have little boys--do they need to see strange women in their underwear? NO, they don't and I should not have to worry about watching out for it. And yeah, my kids ask about what some commercial is for all the time. Course, that is better than DNiece who was singing Viva Viagra at her little brother's bday party. (Okay, that was kinda funny:rotfl: DSIL did not think so though!)

First of all, seeing a tampon ad doesn't tell people when YOU have your period. Second, you are a woman. I suspect most people know you get your period.

As for the underwear. Have your sons ever been to the beach? Not a whole lot different. In fact, most underwear seems to cover up more than most bathing suites.

So has everyone managed to change their skin now so these annoying ads are no longer an issue?
