Uncomfortable Ads

Why is this now acceptable? Why do you (not you- the generic you) think that KIDS need to know this stuff?? Please don't give me freedom of spreech, press, etc... I think there's a time and place. And lately the time and place seem to be everywhere, anytime. So if I think explaining a pimp to a CHILD is inappropriate- I'm behind the times...
But why do you have to give the child every definition of the word? If a child hears "Pimp My Ride" and the child asks what Pimp means, why can't you just say it means to beautify or enhance?

There are other words out there with more than one meaning where one or more of the meanings is considered by most to be vulgar, or at least adult in nature, but the other meanings of the very same word are perfectly harmless. If my kid hears these words, hopefully in the more proper form, and asks, I will explain that definition -- I won't go into the full set of definitions for the word(s).

Ya see, that is what is killing the language. It is not a nice word in my eyes.

Mikeeee

Not nice words are killing the language? I guess I don't understand what you mean. Not every word can or should be nice and pretty.

Pimp. This word got my 11 yr old daughter in so much trouble at school a couple months ago. So, her class is in the music room and the music teacher had decorated for Valentines day and my daughter says, "this room is pimp". The teacher yells, "who said that?" My daughter raises her hand. They're taken back to their classroom and she tells dd's teacher what she said.
DD's teacher goes on to tell the whole class what a PIMP is! What?!:scared1: She comes home from school and asks me if we know what a pimp is. Before I can even answer she proceeds to tell me "well, it's a man who has a group of women that he sells for sex and he gets the money"! And no I wasn't there, but her teacher's side of the story matched my daughter's take on the whole thing.
It's just funny to me because I'd never heard her say the word pimp before and when she said it she meant "this room looks cool".

I really think teachers should keep up with the kids trends and such, watch mtv every now and again, go to urbandictionary.com, thats rediculous that the teacher did that , honestly think its pretty out of line. If you are going to work with kids, learn there language.

So when my kid decides to use it in school, or in front of another adult (who may not know of the current usage) I can then RE-EXPLAIN why said adult is upset, or puts them in time-out?

Or to quote another poster Doe- "This word got my 11 yr old daughter in so much trouble at school a couple months ago. They're taken back to their classroom and she tells dd's teacher what she said. DD's teacher goes on to tell the whole class what a PIMP is!"

So my kids will STILL hear the actual meaning of the word!
And my example was actually a viagra commerical.... try explaining THAT to your kids.... "uhh... it's medicine.." until they catch onto some words in the ad.. not gonna type them here, thanks.

Another old timer chiming in here. I was pretty shocked to see that word on a Disney site also. And forgive me, but the person who said to tell a child it means beautify? Sorry, I can't agree. We all know the real meaning of the word pimp.

I also think the Viagra ads cross the line, as well as many personal hygiene commercials, etc. Just because some people are very liberal and explain all this to their children doesn't mean everyone should be forced to do so. Cable TV is one thing; you pay for it. But to have all this brought into my living room without my consent really gets to me.

I have to disagree. Urbandictionary for teachers? :scared1: The teachers are there to teach, not learn "the kids language". Should cursing be allowed because all the kids do it?

But, the word pimp has several different meanings. The meaning of beautifying something is just as real as the meaning of someone selling women for sex. It's just a newer meaning. Language evolves over time. That doesn't make meanings of words any less valid.

Why does this have to turn into a discussion about what is and is not appropriate for children? I would hope that any children young enough to not understand what a "pimp" is wouldn't be left to surf the internet unsupervised.

Yes urban dictionary for teachers, if they understand what the kids are saying it will help them to understand the kids they are teaching, and not have things happen like what happened to the posters who posted about the "pimp room".

I would think teachers would want to understand the kids they are teaching, the kids talk this way, like it or not, and a teacher would benifit to know what the kids are talking about.

I didnt say anything about cursing or being disrespectful. I am amazed that you are scared to think that teachers should understand the kids they are teaching.

But this thread has nothing to do with teachers. I thought we were talking about advertising on the DISboards.

pimp means beautify and enhance? I thought it indicated 'making it worthy of a pimp'. As in bling bling. I suppose a pimp might consider this enhancing, or maybe even his hos, but most people wouldn't.

You right, but the thread was about the word pimp, which led to a story about a child using the word in school , to mean made nice, and a teacher, who doesnt know that told the whole class about hookers and pimps which led to this .

You're absolutely right. You won't find the definition of "enhance" or "beautify" in the dictionary.

Well, A. Pimp doesn't mean "made nice" no matter what way you look at it. Maybe that's what the child thought but she was wrong. B. The story was an aside and really doesn't prove that the use of the word pimp in an ad is disgusting.

Young kids using this word are meaning beautify or enhance, again the evolution of a word. Most have learned this from watching shows on mtv like pimp my ride, take a junk car and make it brand new and full of extras. The orginal definition was more along the lines worthy of a pimp.

A)Do some research if you like to see what it means, im sorry to say you are not correct. If you want to say YOU personally would never agree with that, thats cool, but fact is, it is one way to define the word in todays culture.

B)I dont think its discusting either.

When my daughter used this word she meant that the room looked cool. That's it. She didn't even know the real definition of the word until the teacher explained it to the whole class. We don't even have MTV or any channels like that and I'm sure she picked it up at school. This isn't how she talks. Period. I'm sorry my post led to this discussion going off topic. :flower3:

I understand that that's what young children might think it means but it is a teacher's job to correct them, is it not? The reason they think it means "beautify" is because of shows like Pimp My Ride. When they pimp a car, it means that they make it look like something a pimp would ride, as someone else has already explained. That's not exactly "beautifying" it.
