Akron police investigate teen mob attack on family

Akron police say they aren't ready to call it a hate crime or a gang initiation.

But to Marty Marshall, his wife and two kids, it seems pretty clear.

It came after a family night of celebrating America and freedom with a fireworks show at Firestone Stadium. Marshall, his family and two friends were gathered outside a friend's home in South Akron.

Out of nowhere, the six were attacked by dozens of teenage boys, who shouted ''This is our world'' and ''This is a black world'' as they confronted Marshall and his family.

The Marshalls, who are white, say the crowd of teens who attacked them and two friends June 27 on Girard Street numbered close to 50. The teens were all black.

''This was almost like being a terrorist act,'' Marshall said. ''And we allow this to go on in our neighborhoods?''

They said it started when one teen, without any words or warning, blindsided and assaulted Marshall's friend as he stood outside with the others.

When Marshall, 39, jumped in, he found himself being attacked by the growing group of teens.

His daughter, Rachel, 15, who weighs about 90 pounds, tried to come to his rescue. The teens pushed her to the ground.

His wife, Yvonne, pushed their son, Donald, 14, into bushes to keep him protected.

''My thing is,'' Marshall said, ''I didn't want this, but I was in fear for my wife, my kids and my friends. I felt I had to stay out there to protect them, because those guys were just jumping, swinging fists and everything.

''I'm lucky. They didn't break my ribs or bruise my ribs. I thank God, they concentrated on my thick head because I do have one. They were trying to take my head off my spine, basically.''

After several minutes of punches and kicks, the attack ended and the group ran off. The Marshalls' two adult male friends were not seriously hurt.

''I don't think I thought at that moment when I tried to jump in,'' Rachel Marshall said. ''But when I was laying on the ground, I was just scared.''

Marshall was the most seriously injured. He suffered a concussion and multiple bruises to his head and eye. He said he spent five nights in the critical care unit at Akron General Medical Center.

The construction worker said he now fears for his family's safety, and the thousands of dollars in medical bills he faces without insurance.

''I knew I was going to get beat, but not as bad as I did,'' Marshall said. ''But I did it to protect my family. I didn't have a choice. There was no need for this. We should be all getting along. But to me, it seems to be racist.''

Akron police are investigating. Right now, the case is not being classified as a racial hate crime. There were no other reports of victims assaulted by the group that night.

The department's gang unit is involved in the investigation, police said.

''We don't know if it's a known gang, or just a group of kids,'' police Lt. Rick Edwards said.

The Marshalls say they fear retaliation at home or when they go outside. They are considering arming themselves, but they're concerned about the possible problems that come with guns.

For now, they are hoping police can bring them suspects. They believe they can identify several of the attackers.

''This makes you think about your freedom,'' Marshall said. ''In all reality, where is your freedom when you have this going on?''

I don't understand. The attackers were of one race (black) and the victims were of another race (white). The attackers shouted "This is our world" and "This is a black world." The victims did nothing to provoke the attack. How is this not considered a hate crime? If it was the other way around (white attacking black) it would have been pegged racism and a hate crime right off the bat. I'm disgusted and it boggles my mind that this isn't considered racism/hate crime.

And for the record, I would be disgusted if it were whites who attacked blacks.

I agree, this is what made me so mad. Since when is it ok to attack people, no matter who they are or what they look like. The article sounds like the police are trying to downplay it by calling them 'a group of kids' as if the injuries hurt less.

I agree, and what's up with police, "Akron police say they aren't ready to call it a hate crime." He** ya it's a hate crime! They were targeted because they were white, how is that not a hate crime. And trust me if this was a group of white kids attacking a Black family I would just as outraged. What is wrong with some kids that they have so little value for a fellow human being? Very sad all the way around.

Didn't you get the memo? There is a huge double standard in the US now.

It's as if two wrongs make a right, in the eyes of alot of blacks, and black leaders, esp race baiters like "REV" Sharpton, et al.
In my opinion it started about the time of the OJ verdict.

Funny how we didn't hear about this hate crime. If I didn't read about it here I probably wouldn't even know it happened and I only live about an hour from Akron.

If the roles were reversed, it would be front page news and the lead story on every news station. :rolleyes1

Definitely a hate crime! Disgusting!!!

This whole thing is very disturbing. I live in Akron. How they can say this isn't a hate crime or gang related is beyond me. Fortunately, akronnewsnow.com isn't afraid to let people speak their minds. Ohio.com has removed the comments posted on this article several times already. They and the mayor want to keep this kind of thing quiet and make everyone think our city is an All-American City. If you call increased violence and high unemployment All-American, then I guess we would be at the top of the list. I'm so proud to say I'm from Akron--NOT. But, in 2 weeks from today, I won't be thinking about any of this because I'll be in Disney where the world is a happier place!

Let me first state that I believe there is a lot of black on white hate crime that isn't reported as such and I do believe there is a double standard that exists.

With that said, I am a bit skeptical. I just can't imagine a group of black teens yelling, "this is a black world." :confused3 I can think of a lot of things that teens of any color would yell in a heated fight but the whole, "this is a black world" phrase seems so odd and very off.

I wasn't there and I don't have a clue what happened. If I had to bet, I would say the two groups got into an altercation and this is a convenient way to stir the masses. Maybe I am wrong.

I could not agree more.

I agree, it's definetly a hate crime. If it was the other way around Al Sharpton would be the first one there protesting.

A similiar story happen on Long Island over the holiday weekend. A group of people beat up a guy in his driveway. And the Police are deciding if it's a hate crime. :sad2:

It sounds like a strange thing for them to say to me too. Maybe if they had said something along the lines of "this is our neighborhood" but "this is a black world" just doesn't sound right.

I can't imagine the man getting into an altercation with a group that size willingly though. Unless one of the boys said something to his daughter that he took offense too?

But regardless, sounds as though he was beaten past the point of a normal altercation and this group, gang whatever needs to be dealt with before they kill someone.

I can see them saying that. I mean...not to bring up MJ but that's the first thing that pops in my head. Someone said that "MJ is back with US" and went on to talk about him being back with the "black people" or however it was worded. So why wouldn't a group of black teens say "this is a black world"? I think it's rediculous. This country will NEVER get over racism until we ALL give it up.

And that poor family...gosh...disgusting!

This so true that its sickening.

yes yesterday on cleveland television news the big story was a woman beating fawn to death, as bad as this is I think its not anywhere close as bad group of black kids beating up a family.

Its as is if "ohhh we cant say anything to raise the ire of white folk, thats now allowed!
Its reverse discrimination if you ask me.

You know if white people marched on city hall to do something about this, it would be called a racist act....but its okay for black people to march on city hall.:confused3

If anyone hears about this family setting up a fund for paying both their medical bills, and hopefully a lawyer, please tell me about it here. I don't typically throw donations around but the idea that this family could be left defenseless because they are the wrong color to be victims turns my stomach. What is this the 1930's in reverse?

It sickening to me that government is so ultra-sensitive on crime issues. The city doesn't want Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson the two biggest racist/hypocirts that ever walked the earth to come flying in saying the only reason the black youths were arrested is because they were black and Akron is a bunch of racists. Forget they as a gang beat a white guy up because he was a particular race that doesn't matter. Sickening!!

yep, and if the races were reverse ******* sharpton would be all of the news calling for justice.

No flames but I'd like to caution people to be careful about what they are saying. To me, this event is a horror because the victims were assaulted based upon their coloring, and are being denied equal treatment for the same reason. The racial make-up of their attackers is only relevant insofar as they were not the same as the victims, and being different seems to be the motive behind the crime.

If this devolves the whole thread will be shut down and that would be a shame. While I understand that this issue hits a nerve for many people it's important that everyone keep their heads so that no-one says things that could be misconstrued.
