Tucking in your shirt - Is it a sin?

We saw the movie Larry Crowne recently, and a 20-something female character tells the Tom Hanks character to stop tucking in his polo shirts. So he does stop. I thought that was weird.

But since then, I've been in a few places where I've noticed that NO one has their shirts tucked in. Like in a room full of 30 people.

I don't mean women's blouses that are meant to be worn out. I mean polos, button-up shirts, and even t-shirts. (And before someone argues with me, I know some shirts can fine good both ways).

So is it a total fashion no-no to tuck in one's shirt nowadays? Am I walking around and people are laughing at me behind my back because I have my shirt tucked in?

I guess I'm a total fashion geezer at 40, but I think in general it looks more sloppy to not tuck in your shirt. Especially knits. Plus because of my body shape (fairly long and thin everywhere except for my tummy), it makes my lumps show up a LOT more if I don't tuck in the shirt. I guess that's the "spare tire" that people talk about :confused:?? It sure is a lot more obvious if I don't have my shirt tucked in.

Maybe it just goes along with buying clothes that come already very worn out for you. I don't get that fashion trend, either.

I'm just so glad that they've started making shirts longer and pant's waistlines higher than a few years ago. For a while I could hardly keep my shirts tucked in even though I wanted to.

Tucked in shirts are out of style right now-except shirts with "tails" like a dress shirt--well unless you are wearing an oversized one with a belt I guess. :lmao:

It just depends on what you're wearing on bottom.

If you're wearing slacks, sure. Shorts/jeans, no... you'll just look stupid. (trust me, jeans + tucked in t-shirt == very stupid look)

Nope. No tucking with jeans or shorts. DH cannot grasp this idea. He acts as if I'm trying to make him do something immoral. :sad2:

The dress code at my high school required you to wear your shirt tucked in, no matter what style the shirt, and no matter what style bottoms. I never tuck in my shirt now! DH has a strict dress code at work at requires all shirts to be worn tucked in, but it was recently amended to say that shirts that are not designed to be tucked in do not have to be tucked in.

I haven't tucked in a shirt in 24 years. Since my middle never went back to pre-pregnancy size. Guess I'm fashionable w/out knowing it. :goodvibes

However, my husband with a small waist always tucks his shirts in. I'll have to give him the fashion update.

Who knew? And I even saw that in the Larry Crowne movie but I just thought it was a quirky movie thing. :rolleyes1

I guess I just tend to follow the Tim Gunn line of advice rather than the advice of kids. But he's pretty nerdy, too :).

I've gotten so darned chubby the last 2 years. Before then, I always tucked in my shirt.

Why care if they are?

But then, I prefer "mom jeans," pantyhose, slips under dresses, non-thong underwear, one-piece swimsuits, and shirts - but not sweaters or sweatshirts - tucked in.;)

ETA: As for the "lived-in look," I will confess to disliking the look of brand new tennis shoes/sneakers. I always try to dirty them and wear them out a bit ASAP.

OP ~ I'm actually shocked you're asking this. I've never seen your pics, but just kinda expected a trendy, fashion-forward kinda gal. I guess I was wrong. :snooty: Please know your posts come across as such, that's good. ;)

No, no tucking. No.

Actually I find this funny! I got harrassed quite a bit by a girl in 6th grade because I didn't tuck my t-shirt in my jeans. I did finally start tucking my shirts in then but guess what? I don't tuck my t-shirts into my jeans anymore -- so I guess I was ahead of the fashion times. Basically I always think of it as a last laugh to the girl that harrassed me about tucking my shirt in that I now wear the t-shirts untucked all the time.

Now if it's a shirt that is meant to be tucked in such as a blouse but other than that I haven't got a clue the last time I tucked a shirt in.

Why care if they are?

Oh! This thread is not going to make me start leaving all my shirts untucked:). I don't really care what other people think. I just wonder about the trend.

And I still think that a lot of people (at least those over age 25) don't tuck in their shirts NOT because they are oh so fashionable, but because they are trying to hide their fat. But really the bulkiness (or worse - tight shirts left untucked) often just makes people look fatter. Myself included. That's why I don't understand it.

Which oddly enough is actually "out" amongst a lot of teens. What's the lyrics to that one song?? Nelly - Airforce Ones:

~~~Now when the boxes go I keep mine (keep mine)
You should peep mine (peep mine, peep mine)
Once or twice but never 3 timesI'm just a sneaker pro
I love Pumas and shell-toes
But can't nothing compare to a fresh, cripsy white pair of (yeah) ~~~~
Never three times..... :lmao:
I'm so super fashion-forward that I DO tuck in my shirts ;).
I WISH more people would tuck in their shirts because I am tired of seeing whale tails :rolleyes1:lmao:
In general I don't tuck shirts in. I tuck in tanks or undershirts that will have an overlayer. For tees I don't tuck them in but I usually turn the hem under so its not quite so long. I tend to wear my tees rather fitted (not tight, just fitted) so they don't hang straight down from my chest but curve under my chest & skim my stomach. I don't know how to describe it but I prefer it when I can crinkle up the fabric a bit at the bottom. I think the crinkles help camo my less than taut stomach.
I don't wear polos & my preferred way to wear a button-up shirt is to wear it open with a tank underneath so in general there is very little tucking in my wardrobe.
I don't think its a sin but it can cut you in half & bring attention to the areas you may be trying to camo.
:thumbsup2 It will be in fashion again eventually....everything comes around again eventually.
It's why I had to do a double-take once when school clothes shopping for the kids a few years ago because I was convinced a pair of pants I saw on the rack were straight out of the Brady Bunch show! I literally remember stopping mid walk and just starring at them for a minute feeling like I was in a time warp.
