Tucking in your shirt - Is it a sin?

I tuck my shirts in because I've got a big stomach and I wear a belt to hold up my pants/shorts. I wear an overblouse most days as well.

If I don't tuck, I look larger and have a big lump in the front where my belt buckle is. It didn't used to be so noticeable when belts were skinny but I've been unable to find skinny plus size belts this spring/summer.
Even when the very few times when I don't wear a belt there's a lump from the button of the bottoms which I think looks bad.

I'm nearly 50 and I don't care if I'm not following fashion. Me being comfy is more important to me.

There are some men's button down shirts that are meant to be untucked, not for work, etc. of course, but there are fitted styles that look great untucked with a nice pair of dressier jeans. DH has one he wears untucked with a sweater over top, I LOVE that look and don't think it looks sloppy at all. It totally depends on the cut, a dress shirt that is cut to be tucked of course looks stupid untucked, but I can assure you, my husband looks anything but sloppy! :lovestruc

I love the look of a button down shirt worn untucked with jeans on men:thumbsup2 We went to a party last week and my DH came down with his polo shirt tucked and my dd's freaked out(before I could, lol)

What I never got was the look (recently) where only the FRONT of a shirt was tucked in. THAT look screams "extremely lazy" to me. Maybe that's what they're going for?

That was a very popular look in the early 90's (jr high). T shirt tucked in the front of your skin tight jeans. Maybe that is why we only tucked the front, because our jeans were so tight (and up to our waist) lol.

I have not seen this look in 20 years.

BTW I wear women cut shirts and do not tuck them in. If I have a t shirt on I will put a ponytail holder in the back of it like the younger girls do, just so I don't have to tuck it in. I only have 2 so I don't wear them often. I cannot remember the last time I tucked in a shirt.

this thread reminded me of Jamie Deen saying once on his mothers show, his new diet is to untuck his shirt, now when I see a man with an untucked shirt, I always think he's on the Jamie Deen diet!

I wear mine untucked but seriously why does anyone really care? Not you Krista but the fashion trends are so silly.

Hey Krista..you heading to WDW in Dec??? If so, we can have a fashion intervention!!!
I'm older than dirt...and I don't tuck. I do tuck if I'm wearing dressier pants or skirt, especially with a belt. But, normal every day wear...shorts, capris or jeans with an untucked shirt for me.
I tucked in a polo shirt once, into my jeans. I thought my 17 y/o dd was going to die of embarrassment!!! Of course, I don't go around with 47 layers of clothing on either, like she does...bra straps showing, cami over the bra and then a tank top!! So many straps going on there..what's that all about???
I think Tim Gunn would rather see my untucked tee shirt vs my dd's multitude of straps!!

I agree that some dress shirts look good untucked.

But with a sweater over it??? Where you can see the bottom of the untucked shirt below the sweater?? UGH!!!

Probably the most ridiculous thing a man can wear.

Isn't embarrassing their teenagers with their style of dress one of the main duties of a parent? ;)

For work, I always tuck. Either dress shirts or polos. It's a dress code requirement and I agree with it. Some of the younger guys try to get away with untucked polos, especially in summer, but a reprimand or two gets them in line. Untuck your shirts on someone else's payroll.

Off duty, mostly untucked.

I've never been accused of being in style.

OP here again. I was shopping just this weekend, and I almost took pictures as I walked past several stores in a couple of malls around here yesterday and today. I noticed many manikins with shirts tucked into jeans/pants with belts - especially males, but also on many females. Maybe it's coming back, afterall :yay:. And while this included Brooks Brothers and other preppy stores for grown-ups, these windows also included some stores with a younger audience like American Eagle and NY & Company.

Now I really wish I had taken pictures. Some of the stuff was so cute, and TUCKED in. All with belts!!!!

I'm 16 and i tuck alll the shirts in and wear a belt !

Thank you, young person!!! :).
See, everyone?? I knew it was going to come back. I'm sure Kendall is perfectly stylish :thumbsup2.

You know I'll be there :cool1:! You can try an intervention, and I'll show you what I'm talking about with the "lumps" being worse when I'm not tucked. You know me - not a big girl, but I do hold all of my extra weight right in the middle. Call me an apple, if you will. Maybe it's not the same for pear-shaped people.

Interestingly enough, it was some pictures of me at WDW a few years ago that made me notice how much more obvious the lumps are when my shirts are not tucked in.

And for the bra straps - I know!!! I've done everything my whole life to hide my bra straps. And now it's like they flaunt them. Many straps. At the same time :confused3. And I don't like lacy camisoles that look you it's your under-clothing peeking out. It looks trashy and cheap.

So panty lines are a no-no, but you're supposed to flaunt your bra. I just don't get it.

But since then, I've been in a few places where I've noticed that NO one has their shirts tucked in. Like in a room full of 30 people.

So is it a total fashion no-no to tuck in one's shirt nowadays? Am I walking around and people are laughing at me behind my back because I have my shirt tucked in?

.

I hate hate hate the tucked in look--especially on guys- I think it looks really geeky!

It depends. I have some blouses that look really cute tucked into dressy shorts, skinny jeans (especially with heels), and pencil skirts. I also have some shirts that look cute tucked into casual pencil skirts.

But then I also have shirts that looked good tucked in with a skirt, but not jeans, or would not look good tucked into anything.

I just make a judgment call on a case to case basis based on what I think looks best. I am a 21 year old btw.

Like PlainJane, tucked or untucked depends on what I'm wearing, and what looks nicest. I'll typically try it both ways before deciding.

But in general...

Low-slung jeans with a fitted, clingy tee... I tuck. That gives me a nice lean line, and means I can show off a big belt. And no worries about my undies showing! ;)

High waisted shorts with a fitted but not clingy tee... I leave my shirt out. That way it skims my hips and looks good. If I leave my tee out, I don't wear a belt.

Wearing a belt under a tee just looks lumpy.

I'm 32 and I have never, ever looked good with my shirt tucked in. I mean I was a chubby-ish kid and then got taller, but still never looked good with my shirt in. And now, well now I prefer that in a fashion sense for the most part.

They style-trend at the moment is to have untucked shirts. I know that stores such as A&F and Old Navy show a "preppy" look with tucked in shirts, but in reality most people don't dress that way.

I agree!

Unless you have a flat stomach, tucking in your shirt can actually make you look heavier than you are.

Of course, at the end of the day, tuck or untuck. If you're comfortable in your clothes, that's all that matters.

Hmmm. Dh and I actually have the same profession so we wear the same uniforms. He gets the shirts that you tuck in, I get the ones that have the straight hem that are designed to be worn untucked. Actually, most of the ladies choose those too. For the guys, it's probably more tucked than not.

I just don't like an extra layer stuffed into my pants.
