Tucking in your shirt - Is it a sin?

Well obviously this depends on what your wearing. Dress Shirt and Slacks, tuck, unless you're in Hawaii, the Caribbean, or the French Riviera.

Everything else should be untucked. Oddly enough, the most serious offenders of this are older men. You would think they've been around long enough to know the rules.

I dunno if it's a sin, but I know it keeps my back warm.

I tuck everything in in the winter time. I don't like back drafts.

I don't tuck in t-shirts ordinarily in warmer weather, and neither does my husband, but if it has buttons it is usually tucked in unless it is a cut that is clearly meant to be left out.

Right now I am comfortably untucked.

Oh! This thread is not going to make me start leaving all my shirts untucked:). I don't really care what other people think. I just wonder about the trend.

And I didn't really care if you cared or not, or if you intended to change or not.:p;) I don't "get" why people care about "in" things, but I know many people do, and that's fine with me.* So long as whatever one wears is appropriate for the occupation, occasion and location, I say wear whatever you want. And even if it's not appropriate, I still don't really care.** Other people might, though, and one might not get hired, lose one's job, be made to leave wherever, or be gossiped about.

*Disclosure: I did care a little bit about what was "in" when I was in Junior High school. I specifically recall wanting to get a pair of a particular brand of "in" jeans. I eventually did, and ended up HATING them because they were so uncomfortable! I almost never wore them, and when I did I couldn't wait to get out of them at the end of the school day. What a waste of $. Learned my lesson.

**I take that back. I do care about very obscene shirts (language and/or pictures) in public, especially where children are present. I wish people would be respectful enough not to wear them publicly.

And I still think that a lot of people (at least those over age 25) don't tuck in their shirts NOT because they are oh so fashionable, but because they are trying to hide their fat.

That wouldn't be my first thought. Or second, third, fourth or fifth. Maybe sixth, if I thought about it at all (which I probably wouldn't, so it really doesn't matter :upsidedow).

Running my mouth too much.:guilty: Time to tuck in.;) Hope you have a happy day tomorrow.:sunny:

You know, I am politically incorrect, swear, attend Jimmy Buffett concerts and drink like the rest of the "Landsharks", am rather open minded to anything, YET.....

Those shirts. :sad2: I'm tired of them. I'm sick of seeing random 13 y/o boys with a shirt about his "nuts" cleverly disguised as a squirrel shirt. Or *FBI* with 'female body inspector', in small letters below it.

I'll agree 1000% with you, on that one. Tucked or untucked, tacky!

Which oddly enough is actually "out" amongst a lot of teens. What's the lyrics to that one song?? Nelly - Airforce Ones:

I'm quite far from my teenage years.;)

I may be wrong, but isn't Nelly the "it's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes" singer/rapper/whatever? If so, what does it matter how new your shoes are if you're always taking them off anyway?:p

Cinderella may have a different take on shoes than me, though.princess:

Cleverly disguised, I can live with. If the innuendo is subtle enough to not be noticeable unless I think about it, I can live with it. What I take issue with is the not-the-least-bit-subtle-but-very-in-your-face stuff. Wish some folks wouldn't put it on their trucks either.

Humorous (to me, anyway), true story: When DH and I were 18 and 19 years old and dating, he bought me an innuendo-y t-shirt because he thought the images on the shirt were cute (a couple of laughing teddy bears). He was totally unaware of the innuendo until I pointed it out to him. I didn't wear the shirt, but I kept it to tease him about over the years. :p

Friends don't let friends tuck! ;)

My DH also has a dress code and tucks at work or any work related functions he attends, always dress shirts and sometimes even polos, but only at work. The rest of the time he is in untucked t-shirts and polos. I have a more relaxed dress code at work, and my summer attire is usually capris and an untucked women's cut T. If I do have to dress up more for meetings or whatever, I'll usually just wear a dress and avoid the whole issue!

I rarely wear anything tucked in. DH was raised to tuck in his shirts, so he's having a hard time adjusting to not tucking some things (like a polo shirt with khaki shorts) but he's doing better with that (our DD keeps on him about it ). Plus he has his CCW permit (so he can carry a gun in public) and that has made him wear his shirts untucked much more often. He'll usually wear a casual button up shirt and a colored matching t-shirt under it, so he'll tuck in the t-shirt and then leave the button up shirt untucked, so his gun doesn't show. Even though it's legal for him to carry it, he doesn't want to draw any unneccesary attention to it.

He's also just getting used to wearing "no show" socks with shorts. :)

not tucking is an unpardonable sin.

If you've got a bit of a belly, not tucking actually makes you look bigger, since the shirt just hangs like a tent, emphasizing whats under there.

I recently seen someone, at a church, presenting a seminar...was wearing jeans, tweed coat, sweater, with the shirt untucked, hanging out the bottom of the sweater...sloppy sloppy sloppy....makes you look like you just don't care...

This is my honest opionion...and please don't "quote" me and go on some rant that it's your right to dress how you want to, and I should not judge you because of the way you dress blah blah blah...it still looks SLOPPY.

I hate wearing anything tucked in. And it really isn't that I'm so fashionable; I just find it uncomfortable.

Except in fashion, the "rules" keep changing.

Personally, I "tuck" 90% of the time. It's not a fashion thing with me, but my cell phone (which I wear on my belt, probably another fashion "no no") digs into my side. Having my shirt tucked makes me not even feel it.

What I never got was the look (recently) where only the FRONT of a shirt was tucked in. THAT look screams "extremely lazy" to me. Maybe that's what they're going for?

For men a dress shirt worn with dress pants can go either way but IMO should be tucked in for the office or a more formal occasion. A button down with jeans looks better and more modern worn untucked. Polo shirts look better untucked. The exception possibly being on the golf course.

For women some tops can be tucked in depending on the rise of the pants. A fitted top tucked into lower rise jean or khaki with an interesting belt can look good and is in style. On the other hand, a baggie t-shirt tucked into mom jeans is just a big fat no.

If it's a dress shirt, especially for men, then tuck it in. It just looks sloppy otherwise, or like you are in the process of undressing.

For anything else, do whatever you want. I don't tuck in shirts because it's uncomfortable and frankly I don't need the extra padding there anyway!

That's just my opinion, and I would likely be a candidate for the "Fashion Crimes" type reality shows, so take it with a grain of salt. :rotfl:

I had to train my parents and sister not to tuck their shirts in (tshirts into shorts, polos into jeans ). My parents do well, but my sister sometimes falls off the wagon.

The only time I tuck is if I'm wearing a business suit with a jacket. I just don't fancy the look on me.

If you're wearing a polo shirt, and you've got a gut, and there is a gap between your body and the bottom of your shirt hanging out in space...this look is not doing you any favors...think tablecloth.

properly tucked is much better...not too loose, not too tight.

There are some men's button down shirts that are meant to be untucked, not for work, etc. of course, but there are fitted styles that look great untucked with a nice pair of dressier jeans. DH has one he wears untucked with a sweater over top, I LOVE that look and don't think it looks sloppy at all. It totally depends on the cut, a dress shirt that is cut to be tucked of course looks stupid untucked, but I can assure you, my husband looks anything but sloppy! :lovestruc

Shirts/tops should only be tucked at formal events (weddings, graduations etc), playing golf, or part of a uniform. Otherwise, IMOH its a big no-no. Unless you're trending and keeping up to date with the most modern of fashions, then women's high waisted shorts and pants with tucked tanks is A-OK (such as the links below). I would post a pic or two, but don't have a clue as to how :confused3

I tuck frequently, but not exclusively. (male)

My justification is, "I have a waist, and I'm going to flaunt it!".

Our son's high school has a dress code requirement for males only in which they must all tuck and belt.

Imagine, if you will, a young man in shorts, belt and tucked t-shirt in the summer. Or, a tucked sweater in the wintertime.

Although it may be better than the alternative, which is a whole bunch of fanny-showing saggy-bottom jeans. :lmao:
