So we're driving to WDW from Baton Rouge, Louisiana - i put in our address to CBR and google said about 11hrs while Yahoo says a little more than 10hrs. Now obvisouly we'll be making stops & switching drivers ..... we are planning on leaving the night before so we can essentially arrive to check in & hit the parks close to opening time. Now I also realize the hr time change (we'll lose one hr) - so I'm trying to decide on when to depart. It'll basically take 12hrs with stops, switching, time change, etc. If we don't make it for the opening of any park (they all seem to be opening at 9am on apr 30) - do you think we'll be stuck in lots of people traffic at the parks???? Thanks!

According to Touringplans the crowds should be 4 and 5s that weekend, which is very slow. I think Grad nights are keeping people away. MK will close Friday and Saturday early either 6 or 7. I like the crowd levels so much DBF and I might go that weekend.

We drive also. We're about the same distance as you are. We leave early in the morning and make several stops and we're in the hotel unpacking by 3 and ready to relax from the drive- I'd say plan for 13 hours just in case - I don't think the traffic will be too bad esp.since you are driving at night.

I can make this drive from BR in 10 1/2 hours, that includes stopping for gas (and people go potty then!) and then a sit down meal at some point (that might take 45 mins or so).
Anyway...shouldn't take 12 hours. :)

We usually drive almost the whole way there the day before, and sleep around Gainesville. That way we can get up in the morning and be at a park pretty early...we almost made rope drop this last trip!

Make sure you take 429 (Western Expressway) off the Turnpike instead of I-4. It has close to zero traffic and keeps you off the madness that is I-4.

are you staying onsite with a package? if so, you will have to go to resort and get tickets first. i am crazy i know, but i almost forgot that on our last all night trip. i had planned on park but forgot we would have to go get tickets first! can you imagine rope drop and then getting to counter with no tickets! but realized before we left so worked out.
if no package dont forget to plan time to actually get to park once you enter Disney property, park the car, get everyone out, if kids another potty break on way in, etc.

Hello Neighbor;

I keep saying I'm gonna plan a Baton Rouge Dismeet soon! There are SO many of us Disfanatics here...

We have driven in a gazillion times... most often we stop on the way (visiting family in Ft. Walton, Wewahitchka, and near Gainesville)... then drive a short distance to WDW the second day... and drive Straight Home after the trip...

In May we're driving straight in...1 day, sleep, park next day... and driving straight back.

ALthough you don't seem to have kids in tow... I would still plan 12 hours for the trip. That's just "me"... I'd rather think "Boy - I am making GOOD time" the whole way than "Wow - We're way behind schedule" the whole trip...

AND... "STUFF" does happen! When DS was about 8... we actually blew a tire in Marianna. Last year...tire went flat on way down... AND AC went out on way back (US/IoA trip with DS). Luckily we were visiting Dad in Marianna and the Marianna Walmart took care of us... (re: Tire)

I remember the road trips to WDW at your age... and you have to make the best use of time and $$.... Plus you have a LOT of energy... (Drive all night...parks all day)... but remember to take it easy ...You'll get there in time to have a GREAT Time...and I agree with PP...it shouldn't be too busy at all especially when you dont' have kids to worry about.... you guys can maximize fast passes and Single riders...and you won't have melt downs... so dont' worry about crowds !

Have a magical visit !

Hugs,
Mary

wow - you're gonna be exhausted driving 12 hours then hitting the parks.

we drive down from Canada and we make sure we're always there arriving at night even if it's 10pm so that we get a good night sleep and hit the park in the morning.

but - if that's what you're planning i don't think you should have too much traffic issues if driving through the night. just make sure your well rested and change drivers often

We live in maryland and we usually drive down takes about 15 hours. Its really nice because my wife and i split the driving and the other sleeps. When we get to the parks we are a little sleepy but the kids slept the whole way and are ready to go. I have never had a problem with traffic when we come down usually we hit the orlando area around 0800 it gets a little slow but its nothing compared to baltimore/dc rush hours. In my opinion you are making the right decision by driving over night. As long as you and your spouse can handle sleeping in the car and driving all night.

I'm from New Orleans and it the hours you mentioned sound about right. It takes us about ten hours to get there.

THANKS for that tip! I'll make sure our travel plans include 429!!!

We are staying at CBR with vacation package so we're going to do online check in & stop to get keys/tickets then hit the parks. OH and NO we don't have little ones ... we're the only two big kids on this trip! We also figure that once our room is ready we'll head back & crash for a little bit then hit epcot for EMH. We also considered stopping to sleep somewhere but we continuously went back & forth on this decision. We may still do this ... but both figure that once we're driving we're going to want to just keep going - we're young & crazy like that!!!

Why not order your tickets ahead of time and have that much out of the way. You can order them directly from Disney or use Undercover tourist and save even more money. If you are a Mousesavers Newsletter subscriber, you can save even more off of the already discount rate.

I am in Livingston, La and we also drive down to the World at least once a year. We do it in 12 hours with 2 kids. That includes bathroom breaks, food stops and change out drivers with my DH. We did CBR in 2008, we where there during the Sept. 2008 hurricane. Loved CBR it is very nice. Hope you have a great time.

I think you should hold a DIS party for us southerns. I love the world and love to get info from others who have been and maybe done something we haven't done before.

I’m in North Alabama and the estimated map time is about 10.5 hours – 11 hours. We’ve driven down twice in the past couple years and have made the trip in about 9.5 hours. I don’t speed… well, within reason. ;) We don’t stop other than to use the restroom or grab a bite from a fast food place which is typical of any family.

A couple years ago DW (26) and I (27, now) drove to Ocala and stayed the night, then woke up early and drove to our on-site resort. We wound up getting to the parks around noon, IIRC. That was in December, when crowd levels were about 5-6, I believe.
We also just went in November 09. We left mid morning (about 8:30am) and got to DW at about 7pm Florida time (which means we lost an hour). We went first to downtown Disney to do some shopping, then back to our hotel room and went to the parks the next day.

My wife’s sister’s family made the drive overnight and went straight to the parks after doing some drive sharing and kids sleeping in the car and they seemed to do well during the first half of the day, but as the day progressed they were increasingly wore out and kind of messed them up the 2nd day when they slept in too late due to being so tired.

In that bit of experience, I think it’s better if you delay your trip to the park until a day when you’ve been able to rest and still wake up early. We’re a ‘get our money’s worth’ (see: cheapskates) family, and given the cost of park tickets, I’d prefer to have a full day rather than a half day no matter if the park is going to be crowded or not. But, that could just be us. You may have reasons for wanting to go to the park asap (screaming kids, etc).
I suggest simply getting an extra night at DW, making the drive up during the day and visiting the hotel/DTD once you arrive, and go to the park(s) the day after your arrival. You’ll be completely rested and ready to go.

I don’t know your situation and how you tolerate lack of sleep. You and your husband may be able to do just fine on 4 hours sleep each, but I still think the best idea is to take an extra vacation day and make your first night at Disney a non-park day, while getting some of the shopping/visiting at the hotel out of the way.
The ultimate lesson for any Disney visitor is this: get there early. No matter the crowd levels (which are estimated and aren’t dead accurate, as you’ll see from others who have complained about this in many posts), I think it’s simply best to get there bright and early. I love to sleep in… Love it… I say “it’s vacation, why should I wake up early”. Then I show up an hour after the park opens and kick myself while my wife just grins with the “I told you” look.

When we check in at CBR we'll pick up our Keys to the World with our tickets on them already & we'll do the online check in so it'll be waiting for us when we arrive.

We CAN leave any time after noon on Apr 29 but we were trying to save money by not sleeping somewhere else however I am starting to realize how tired we'll be - but we're used to lack of sleep (he's done the law school & BAR thing while i've gone thru med school & no sleep there too!) Perhaps I'll shop around & pick something off-site .... I guess downtown disney area for the night & then check in CBR early for our keys THEN hit the park??? We just want to utilize every second we have for our vacation as it will be the last one for a LONG while!

Well, first off, you guys should have enough money since you’re doctors and lawyers to not even have to worry about saving any. :)
*I’m just kidding, of course* ;)

Is there a reason why you would stay off site? Or, are there simply no vacancies on site for that first (potentially added on) night? I checked and it looks like you guys are going to be there during the ‘regular’ season. A bit off topic, but have you looked into getting a discount on the room yet?
http://www.mousesavers.com/disneyresorts.html

I’m only asking because, unless there’s pretty decent cost savings to be had, IMO, you might as well go ahead and stay at Disney instead of off-site for the first night.
If you stay off site the first night you kind of defeat the purpose of getting to Orlando the night before in order to get to the parks early since you’ll want to go to the hotel first to check in. However, you don’t have to go to the hotel. You will have to pay for parking that morning at the them park, though, since you haven’t checked in and haven’t gotten your resort parking pass. Add $10 (or whatever it costs to park) for parking which might also make you reconsider staying off site the first night.

If you decide it’s better to stay off site, you guys could check out some local restaurants or shopping. You don’t have to go to DTD the first night. We do because we like to do the Disney shopping somewhat early, and were already there with only a few hours to spare until parks closed. There was simply no reason to bother doing anything else.

I understand utilizing every second. Again, you’re talking to someone who takes pride in being cheap.
All of this is up to you… I’m not trying to push an agenda. Just trying to help. If you and your husband can drive overnight and get to the resort early, drop your bags at the desk and hit the park(s) then go ahead! Git ‘r dun! ;)
I’d just hate for you guys to be wore the heck out that night and potentially throw your 2nd day out of whack due to your lack of sleep the night before.

It would be cool to plan a lunch somewhere. Especially if we could find a place in Baton Rouge that is reminiscent of a part of WDW (Like the Mall of LA Food Court and we can pretend we're in Sunshine Seasons at Epcot LOL):lmao:.... I think I would REALLY love that.......

South Alabama here. 5 minutes from the Florida state line to be exact! It takes about 6 1/2 hours to get there from here. I leave at midnight on Friday night and drive all night so we get to the resort first thing in the morning. Less traffic, kids sleep (no "are we there yets") and I make really good time. Last year we got really lucky cause our room at CBR was ready at about 7:30 am!

I'm envious of all of you who only have to travel 10-12 hours! We follow the same route as the rest of you but have to drive several hours first.

I will only add to allow time for delays. I can't begin to count the number of time we've had detours or wrecks or other things (once a house being moved) slow us down on I-10. It's exasperating because I just want to get there!

As for staying offsite that first night, that's really not so bad. If you find a good location, it's easy to drop your stuff and get to the parks with everyone else. Some places are actually closer to some parks than certain Disney resorts! There is the parking fee of course since I doubt that you'd want to wait for resort transportation.
