Travel shaming. Are you limiting your social media posts?

But they don’t. That’s the problem.

Well, I suppose don't go to the places that don't enforce it.

Luckily we've been able to go to the zoo, a couple restaurants and a museum and there were no issues with compliance.
When we do these things, we do wait two weeks to see my parents. :)

I guess I didn't answer the question. I'm not limiting social media posts, but really we only do an instagram for my cat and he's not mask compliant, so he stays home. ;) Plus we don't have a vacation planned until next April.

Haven't noticed any shaming, but really don't care. I live in rural Virginia where we've had very few cases. Just got back 2 weeks ago from a family reunion in Nags Head with my folks, 4 siblings, and all the kids. The Outer Banks was packed with vacationers.

Then last weekend, we fly to Maine for my mother in laws burial. She had passed in January, and always wanted to be buried with her family, and this was the earliest date that worked for everyone.

Many of my friends have been taking their usual summer vacations, and I'm happy for them. I'm very sorry for those who have been directly impacted by covid.

Did you do the 2 week quarantine in Maine or the negative COVID test?

I'm going back and forth on if I want to post about my trips coming up (end of August, thanksgiving week, and christmas week), I just really don't know if I want to or not. While I know all of my family I really care about know I'm going and are fine because they know I take precautions, it's the other yahoos I don't want to deal with. I have had a few friends go and post about it, one is there right now, but I know they have had mixed reactions with posting. I really never go anywhere, most people know that, so I think everyone knows I'm careful but it's just in my head I don't want to deal with negative reactions. But who knows, maybe no one will say anything. I had the virus in early/mid March and didn't even say anything when I was sick because I was afraid of being shamed even though I know I did nothing wrong, it really is a problem.

How did masks work in Hawaii, Australia, etc etc? It adds a false sense of security. Wash your hands. Don't touch stuff you don't need to touch. Don't go out of if you feel less than 100%, keep your distance, and always...always... eat roller hot dogs from your gas station. If you can eat those, nothing will get you.

If the rules are to wear a mask, we will wear a mask. I'm not debating efficacy because why? Those are the rules. :)

Umm, it's not about having enough money to travel. It's about spreading a deadly virus through your travels. Yes, if you are travelling then you are selfish. Why do you think Florida's numbers are so high. It's because of people being out and about that the rest of us can't go anywhere. I'll shame you and then some.
I really wish people like you would just go to WDW and see what they are doing. They have it nailed and it is safe. If you can travel and NOT spread COVID, why not go? I will say, it did us a WORLD of good mentally. Just to not have the constant negativity beating us down for a week - it was refreshing - necessary in fact. Not only that, but "safer than going to the grocery store" really is true. We went to Trader Joe's last night - home to the people who are most adamant about COVID restrictions. I noticed behavior there that was FAR more risky than anything I saw in a week @ WDW. Just standing in the aisle reading labels - don't do that! It makes it impossible for anyone to stay 6' from you and move around the store. I wouldn't have even noticed that if I hadn't gone to WDW.

Ding ding ding.

I really really think a lot of people would have lower blood pressure if they turned off the tv, quit going to certain 'news' sources, and maybe got out into the world instead. 330 million of us here, 99.99999% are doing okay. The virus isn't killing everyone. Be safe, help communities and small businesses. Deaths from overdose and suicide are skyrocketing, those will only get worse. People need to get back to life.

I'm a horrible person. We've been to Florida 5 times. I've traveled for work out of state 3 times. I go to work every day. We eat in restaurants. We shop. We live. It is possible.

I do not agree. Each person has to make their own decision based on their circumstances. I have taken two vacations, a ten day trip to the beach in June and a three day WDW trip in July. For both trips, I made sure the house was well stocked with food before I left so I could quarantine when I returned. I quarantined before I left, to make sure I was healthy before leaving. I followed all the guidelines, including masks, distancing, and hand washing. I avoided any situation where there was a chance a crowd could gather. I did quarantine when I came home, and I live alone, so I did not risk infecting others in my household. I did not catch the virus on either trip. Those trips were vital to my mental health, which is equally as important to me as my physical health.

I went to my local Publix Wednesday, where there were non masked people crowding the aisles and not distancing properly. That trip was much more dangerous than either of my vacations. I have been grocery shopping about every third week, because I feel a strong need to quarantine after being there, a much stronger need than I felt after either vacation.

Each person has to make their own decision regarding the risk they are willing to take. So far as I am aware, there aren’t any restrictions preventing anyone from coming to Florida to visit. If you want to be out and about, be out and about. All I ask is that you follow all the guidelines regarding masks, distancing, and hand washing, and that if your state has any restrictions you have been asked to follow after traveling elsewhere, that you abide by those as well. Obviously, I do not know you, and do not know if you have any underlying health issues that make the virus more dangerous, and I am not encouraging anyone to take the virus lightly. You can travel and still take the virus seriously.

Yup, most of us believe you are responsible for you and I am responsible for me. No one is responsible for me but me.

With the virus, it's easier said than done. We could be asymptomatic, and not know it. Especially if we go to a hot spot. As a result, we're responsible for not spreading the virus, and potentially harming the most vulnerable.

Now, do I travel? Yes. I did cancel a trip to Houston last month, but substituted that for a trip to Gatlinburg. I am going to South Carolina, next month. I also eat in restaurants; at least once a week, and I go to in-service church (social distancing, of course. But I take precautions. Especially in wearing my mask.

I took a break from FB about a month after things shut down because the stress of all of the arguing and name calling in my newsfeed was not good for my mental health. I still only quickly scan and I do not comment much. For that reason, I did not feel a need to post about our Disney trip or our trip to Georgia. I guess it was a fear of shaming. I did post a few things on IG and didn't receive any "hate" comments and yes, I was afraid I would. I am astounded at how hateful and judgemental people are being because I refuse to life my life cowering in fear. I am wise and take responsible precautions but I am not going to stop living. My own mental health as well as that of my family is important to me. Interestingly, my parents picked me up from the airport the other day and I wore my mask and sat as far back in their van as I could, just to protect them. They were not happy with me for trying to protect them. They refuse to live in fear also and have been traveling (road trips) themselves. They are clearly in the most at risk population due to age and health concerns and I would never want to put them at risk.

We traveled from a low risk place to another low risk place last week for a much needed family vacation. We specifically picked a type of vacation where it would be easy to social distance and avoid people if we chose too. In places that were shared with the public we wore our masks and practiced social distancing, along with everyone else I saw.
I don't typically post on social media about my vacations but pretty much everyone knew we were on vacation, no shaming at all.
I personally wouldn't travel if I was from a hotspot and I wouldn't visit a hotspot at this point in time but if someone is in an area that isn't a risk and travels to one that isn't and follows all the mandates and guidelines I don't see it as any big deal.

It can be done safely. We’ve done it that way twice. But go ahead and shame away if it makes you feel better. But it’ll likely have the opposite effect on people - shaming doesn’t work to change behavior.

As I said, we’ve gone away twice. Both to rented beach houses, where we drove straight through and brought all of our own food. We didn’t do anything there we wouldn’t be doing at home. And we self-isolated for the 2 weeks prior to going and the 2 weeks when we got back. I debated for a second about posting anything on my social media about it, but in the end decided I’d post what I wanted and I didn’t really care if people judged me. I needed both trips for my mental health (and that of my kids), and that isn’t being overly dramatic. If people are upset by it, that’s on them. They know how to unfriend me if what I post upsets them.

That said, I know I am in a privileged position to be able to still do something like this safely based on our job situations and where we live (as we never left our state).

In PA your unemployment benefit is 50% of your weekly wage. Even with short term relief added for a time, that’s not exactly living the high life.
The federal $600 added alone is $15/hour, for not doing anything. Add that to your 50% and minimum wage earners are earning $18/hour. Our 1 week employees at $13/hour made $21/hour for watching Netflix while our 25 year employees stayed working making less.
