Trans couple too afraid to go to Florida - how accepting is Disneyland?

It doesn't really matter.

The post shared what are clearly some fears held by several people, and allowed a discussion to start around that, which I feel has been largely supportive of those fears.

Ignore the people who want to pretend this isn't "a thing." Ignore them like they want to ignore the existence of all those things they are so scared of.

Oh, I definitely think fears of going to Florida are valid. Especially after seeing transphobic people even in this thread. And the fears of going to a medical facility if sick or in an emergency would be very scary.

I think Disneyland is definitely going to be more accepting, overall. (Though there are transphobes and homophobes everywhere.) I had on an LGBTQ+ shirt on a day of our last trip at Disneyland and had several people come up to me to tell me they liked it. Not sure if I'd get the same thing at WDW. Might wear it there in January to see.

In the World itself and all the other FL parks we regularly visit with our gay and trans family and friends we've never had a single issue.
Outside the parks varies by location sadly.

Am here now, we got here yesterday. GF was worried about presenting as her usual butch/gnc self but it has been fantastic so far. If anything it seems that with all that’s happening lately, guests are actually more supportive—could be because it’s Pride and Gay Days are happening atm but we are seeing tons of folk in rainbow attire, many other gnc and trans guests and s/s couples in general. Very heartening to see so many supportive ally shirts, like a guy in a rainbow “Free Dad Hugs” shirt at HS today. I am not trying to invalidate anyone’s fears or feelings, especially wrt healthcare concerns, but as far as the other guests go, I am extremely happy to report that the Disney bubble is as safe and welcoming as ever.

There are books being banned in Florida, and teachers being investigated in Florida, simply because ONE person complains. (Amanda Gorman's amazing poem "The Hill We Climb" was just banned in Miami-Dade country yesterday. Because of One person. It's insane!)
No, there are not books being banned in FL, there are books being removed from school libraries, many of which shouldn't have been there in the first place. The Hill We Climb was not banned in Miami-Dade County because of one person. It was moved from the elementary section of the library to the middle school section of the library on the recommendation of six school employees.

I would have no problems going to Central Florida as part of a same sex couple, I've been there twice this year already and have never felt or seen any issues. But everyone has to do what they feel is right for themselves. My personal belief is that this is no different than the rural people that won't go into minority neighborhoods in large cities out of fear.

This is the bill that is the most concerning to me. I don't think it will pass the courts but the idea that a state is passing bills that make discrimination legal does not sit right.
That bill doesn't say what you've been led to believe it says. It says that medical practitioners can refuse to perform treatments that they have a conscience based objection to. Not that they can refuse patients because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or anything else. Some states have a law like this already, there are 10 states that allow for physician assisted suicide, all 10 have an ethical carve out that providers can't be forced to participate.

The definition of book banning does mean books are removed. There seems to be a wide definition of what pornography is, and it seems to have been expanded as a reason to remove a book. School employees are likely nervous about losing their jobs, so will err on the side of caution. I am a retired middle school librarian. I find it laughable what is being removed at the high school level. Parents should be more concerned about what their children are viewing and doing online. As far as going to Florida as a trans couple, I don’t think anyone can predict. Depends on who you run into.

Seriously. It's like these lawmakers forget that the internet exists. Par for the course, considering who we are dealing with.

We're in Delaware so WDW is significantly closer to us, but we're both way too afraid to set foot in Florida. My wife brought up the idea of going to Disneyland in California. How accepting are they? I just assume we'd be safer there than in Florida.
There are so safe spaces. 🤣🤣🤣

It says that medical practitioners can refuse to perform treatments that they have a conscience based objection to.
This is exactly what I am scared of..... a christian, jew, trans person, a smoker, or one of legislator's who passed this bill, can be denied treatment, because the doctor has a conscience based objection to preforming the treatment. Thats scary. It's one thing if it's an elective treatment.... which physician assisted suicide is... and some (not all) abortions are..... It's the emergencies I worried about. It's the ability to take a political agenda into an emergency room that is of concern.

You can say I am making a bigger deal that what it is...... however poorly written bills that are so vague to cause confusion. Should always be seen as being the worst they can be. These bills should not be given the benefit of the doubt. These bills should be fought against. Good bills with clear language are what we should demand.

I will stop my rant now.

Perhaps parents should monitor what their kids are looking at?? Parental controls??

Parental controls are a joke. And you are assuming every other parent of every kid yours hangs out with has the same limits. Kids share information. You can't control what your kids consume at all. Extreme attempts to control kids usually backfire.

I remember growing up in the 80s, before the internet, I was exposed to pornography more than once at a friend's house. One had an older brother who got a hold of some Playboy magazines and VHS tapes, and my next door neighbor found her parents stash of graphic magazines and showed it to me. I was like 9 or 10. My parents, to this day, have no idea this happened. They also never once talked to me about sex. I learned it all from books and sex ed in school. It didn't turn me into a degenerate.

The idea that you can control the things your child sees is a pipe dream that will never be true.

Kids these days have so much information available to them ALL THE TIME, and they are smarter than their parents about how to get access to it. They hardly even read books anymore. The book bans will accomplish nothing.

Will never get over how my 10yo cousin knew what a vibrator was. They 100% learned it from friends because their 14yo sibling did not know what it was and asked me to explain. Their parents did not know 10yo knew either.

Just to comment on the safety at Disney World...I am gay, not trans. I am currently at Disney, and traveling with a straight friend and his grandson. I am wearing rainbow themed Disney T-shirts and I have some Pride baseball style caps.

I feel perfectly safe, but I AM staying onsite, so offsite, your mileage may vary. I have seen some non-binary and trans (I assume) cast members, who have wished me Happy Pride, and all seems well here as far as safety. Disney World has some lovely inclusive photo op walls to use as backgrounds this year, Some are manned by Photopass photographers, so your entire group can be in the photos, or you, of course, may take your own. There are several obvious families and couples in the parks, and again, everything seems fine here. I have not seen anything negative at all.

And further more, you were not assaulted between the airport and WDW.
Just sayin’

Coming back to this thread just to mention that we were at MK yesterday when Gay Days was happening there and trans and gnc people were out in full force, it was wonderful to see. Saw many shirts/hats/pins referring to pronouns, trans flag colors etc along with general lgb attire. It was so heartening to see this specifically. In fact it was the only time I ever had an issue using the companion bathrooms so far on this trip, because people were using them! The pride photo ops around the parks specifically have trans flag colors along with the progress rainbow as well. Many, many allies were in force as well. It was a wonderful and affirming time, as the best pride events are.

Awesome to hear!!! I'm happy to hear that WDW is still a place that people can feel not only safe, but celebrated for being who they are. Whether "happy pride" for gays days, merry Xmas for candlelight processional month, or any other time Disney acknowledges people....I'm happy to see Disney saying welcome.
