Trainer Killed By Whale at Seaworld (Orlando)

The whales were not cooperating earlier and, according to witnesses, seemed very agitated. Sea World should not have proceeded with the shows. The 'Shamu' show is a huge money-maker, and the sole reason why it exists.

I do not blame the whale at all. It's very unnatural for an animal to be caged in a small area and be forced to do tricks for rewards. I hope this whale is treated humanely for the rest of it's life.

RIP to the trainer as well.

I don't see how canceling some or all of the shows for the day would have made a difference money wise. The ticket is already sold before anyone gets to the show. It would be no different that WDW canceling Wishes because of the weather.

These animals are certainly wild but I've been told that they are like ambassadors for truly wild sea creatures and I can see that logic too. They educate and people learn to appreciate them.

Maybe they shouldn't perform but I can't see turning at least mostly tamed whales out to forage for themselves either. It worked with Willy but it was difficult.

Sea World also does a great deal of good. So there's that too.

I'm trying to confirm this but there are reports that this whale is the only captive whale involved with human deaths. That is interesting if true.

I feel horrible for the family of the trainer. We have been to Sea World twice, the first time, we went to the one in San Diego about 2 weeks before the trainer was attacked there. Then we went to the one in Orlando in 2008.

These animals are beautiful, smart creatures. When humans are added to the equation, you can never truly predict what might set an animal into a defensive, attack mode. I don't blame the whale, and I'm sure the trainers at Sea World feel the same way. I have always been amazed by the intelligence of the whales in the show. My older daughter wanted to become a trainer after watching the shows. I would not discourage her. I am heartbroken for the family. I'm sure all trainers are aware of what could happen. It's just such a rarity for these things happen.

It's like the stingray that killed Steve Irwin....you just don't know what they are thinking, what fears they may perceive. It's all survival instict. Stingrays aren't evil and neither are whales. They do what they have to do to survive. You just cannot tell what are thinking. It's not their fault.

Wow, what a total tragedy. :sad2:

There is a reason they're called 'Killer Whales'

Can't really trust any animal 100%!!

What provoked the attack???

A few years back, DD11 and I went to Sea World. We were doing a behind the scenes tour, well the guide didn't show up at first. A female whale trainer came and began the tour. We were right behind the stadium and the whales woould poke their heads out of the water. She showed us where they weigh the whales.

Then the regular guide came. I asked the trainer if I could take a picture with her and DD. That picture is in my living room. I cannot remember her name.

Killer whales are very smart. In the wild, they work together to close in the prey. I saw where a seal? was on a piece of ice and they kept knocking the ice so the animal would go into the water.

I feel sorry for the trainer and her family. But whether an animal is raised in captivity or not, they still have those insticts in them. We don't know if the whale was trying to play, or if Tilly meant to hurt her.

Just a slight thing about orcas. There is one transient pod on the west coast that attacks in the manner you described, they will even grab deer off the coast. MOST of them don't work like this, they eat fish like salmon.

The last time he was involved in an attack was very close to here. It was crappy little aquarium in Victoria BC where the tank was TINY. It closed shortly after. The trainer fell in and he held her under the water. The other trainer always felt very strongly he was "playing" with her. I've always taken that to mean that he viewed her as a toy, not that they were playing together.

The trainers and animal handlers at Sea World are experts, I am fairly certain if they were using this whale, they knew more about whether he was safe than any of us can possibly tell by reading an article or two.

Is is certain that the whale will be put down or is that possibly a rumor?

Is it possible that the trainer failed to follow protocol? Not blaming her, we all do it every day on our different jobs. You get used to doing something every day and after awhile its easy to say "nothing has ever happened, just this once I will do it this way"

Are these animals bred in captivity or are they rescued animals? What is the good done by a place like Sea World (not in the shows, but in the study of the whales and other animals.)?

My prayers go out to the trainer and her family and for the safety of this beautiful animal.

I love Sea World and all of the shows. The whales are beautiful animals and it seems that you can see a true affection between trainer and whale when you watch them together.

Lisa loves Pooh: I wasn't insinuating that you said they killed humans.

This whale was captured from the wild. I've always wondered what pod they caught him from, and now with the reports he grabbed her I REALLY wonder. I also have always suspected that the man died in a similar manner that the lady in Victoria did, still his fault though....nobody saw it so we'll never totally know. They need to stop getting in the water with them. There is no reason for it, it does nothing for education, nothing for studying the species, nothing for the whales. It's really dumb entertainment on par with sticking somebody's head in a lion's mouth.

As great as Sea World is it's primary goal is not conservation or education, it's entertainment which honestly makes me a little less impressed with their care and knowlege of orcas. We've got an amazing aquarium here, there aren't cheesy things like water rides or people riding on whale's noses. They rescue a lot of animals and release as many as they possibly can. They've been involved with a couple rescues of young whales that got attatched to boats and reunited them with their pods. They had an otter from the Exxon until it sadly passed away last year. A ton of their revenue goes right back into conservation, it's not for profit. If you ever get a chance to go to the Vancouver aquarium the difference is like going to a library vs going to Disneyland. It's not as fun, you might not see as many animals because their enclosures are no where near as cramped, but they REALLY know what they are doing (interesting point they stopped keeping orcas over 15 years ago), they are world leaders, and they aren't there to entertain the masses but to educate them and make the world a better place for WILD animals.

Tili's the father to like 10 whales in the sea world family. So most the whales you see today are captive breed. There's only a handful left of captive wild whales. But Tili is one of them. But who knows how he would be in the wild.

Sea World and other aquarium/zoos around here have done a lot to help wild animals. The most recent, when we had our last cold snap, hundreds of sea turtles were taken out of the waters in shock. They were rehabed and then sent back when water temps got a little warmer.

But having them in captivity allows them to study them so much better, without having to get near the wild ones. There's also several animals near exstinction where they're captive breeding the animals to be released back into the wild. I think they're trying it with tigers or elephants in Africa. And Disney is with the Key West wood rat. Without the ones in captivity, it's very likely they'd become extinct a lot faster.

The last time I was there, they tossed balls into the water to play with them. It was really interesting to see the whales pounce on the balls and try to push them down into the water.

That's exactly how the first trainer died in Victoria.

What a horrible, horrific thing! It's awful that something like this happened. We were at SeaWorld 3 years ago in San Diego and saw the Shamu show. I have to say, I was on pins and needles the whole time. Just watching the whale, it's sheer size and the fact that it was an animal made me very nervous. I couldn't enjoy the show because of it. While I was in awe of it's size, all I could think was that it looked dangerous to have a person in the tank.

I feel awful for that poor trainer. I also feel terrible for anyone who witnessed it, it must have been absolutely horrifying.

There's absolutely no way to know what a whale is thinking. It's an animal. Seaworld hasn't any idea why their whale attacked this trainer. That's what makes animal behavior unpredictable. I agree with others that you simply can't know or predict exactly what an animal will do. Honestly, I hope they shut down that show with the whales. Putting humans in harms way for entertainment like that is ridiculous to me.

I know, I hope they do shut down the shamu show for a time.

But I guess any trainer could get seriously hurt from the dolphins, sea lions, walrus' and heck maybe even the penguins!

Hmm, very interested to hear what seaworld's plans are.

This past summer DH and I went on a whale watching tour up here in the Puget Sound. We were following a smal family group with a mom, "teenage" son daughter and a young juvenile. They caught up with a Porpise and used it to teach the youngest one how to hunt. The older whales kinda of boxed the porpise in and then the baby would chase it, catch it, release it, it happend over and over until it jumped out of the water with it in it's mouth and finally killed it. It was a awe inspiring sight to say the least and really taught us about the power of these beautiful creatures.

Oh goodness, our local news just flashed a quick blurb saying they have video right up to the moment of this poor woman's death. Why do they have to show it?:sad2:

The Dine with Shamu show, which from what I've read is where this happened, is not free with park admittance. You have to pay for it, kind of like a Hoop De Doo Review. So cancelling would have meant the park would have had to refund the money. We did this on Christmas day 2008.

That being said, if the animals had been agitated, then regardless of the money loss, SW should have cancelled the show.

people need to learn how to show respect for others, and for the company. It really is poor taste that they're willing to show the video. Let alone that it got on the internet.

I agree 100%. It makes my stomach turn to think they'll show any kind of footage of this poor woman's death, or even the events leading right up to it.

and the home videos are out....a 10 yr old and his parents among others were in the private dining with whale viewing. I really don't think she would blame the whale, but I don't think it was an accident. How many times does this particular whlae have to have an incident before they do something with it?

These animals are too smart for it to be 'an accident'.

I agree with you.

Just saw on our local news that sea world will be keeping the killer whale. Also, the video showed the trainer minutes before the attack. No footage of actual attack were shown.

The news we watched said Sea World hasn't determined the fate of the whale yet, but they said he won't be put down.

Fwiw Sea World has confirmed that Tilikum pulled the trainer into the tank. She did not slip or fall in before the "attack."
