Train or Drive?

Hi Everyone!! Can anyone offer advice on which travel method they prefer, other than flying! (Mommy is a very fearful flyer :) Amtrak prices don't look too bad for coach seats. We wouldn't do a room with bunks because those prices seem outrageous (and we are a family of 5)! I'm hesitant to try the train for a few reasons, hour for hour it is actually longer than driving (18 for drive, 21 - 23 for train), we would have to sit up in coach all night, and the idea of being stuck in a train for so long is a little unnerving! I did see there are several quick stops along the way where you can pop out for air and strecth so that seems good!
But, driving on the other hand, you can stop anywhere anytime, and you have your car when you arrive! My husband prefers the train due to the fact that he could do work and not drive at all, and unlike me he can sleep anywhere! I prefer the freedom you have while taking your own car! Any thoughts?? :confused3

Daisy,
I'm booked on Autotrain for June.
Taking DDs 5 & 6 1/2. (DW will fly down after work).
We will be in sleepers.
Cost was part of decision, about the same as airfare and rental car.
Other pros: I'll have my car, without having to drive the 20 or so hours.
I can pack heavy, and not have to worry about baggage fees.
The train experience for DDs.
Cons:
travel time

If you have the money to fly, I would have Mommy go to the doctor and get a presription for an anti-anxiety medication (Valium, Xanax, etc) and be in the world in under 3 hours.

please see my amtrak thread:hug:
I agree with your hubby-the train is great so that you don't have to arrive after doing all that driving!!

if you have good credit-sign up for the amtrak reards program AND the amtrak chase card(info in my thread) that will give you a bunch of points when you sign up that can be used to get that family bedroom :)
