Towels for excursions?

So what's the scoop on towels for excursions - both ones booked through Disney and just going on our own? Is taking towels from the ship some kind of cardinal sin (assuming we being them back) or are we expected to bring our own from home?

Thanks for not ripping me for an honest question on advance. :-)

If you book an excursion through DCL that will require towels, there is usually a towel bin in the room where you check in that you can pick up towels from. I usually take two, as they are just the regular sized bath towels like in the room, not beach towels.

If you are not on a Disney excursion, but need towels, I believe I've seen towel bins as you exit the ship, but you can always just pick them up on the pool deck to take along.

One BIG note - please be sure to return the towels you bring. There's usually a towel bin as you reboard the ship to drop the dirty, wet towels in, so you don't have to lug them all the way back to your room. Disney is one of the few ships that has no restrictions to using their towels off the ship, so we don't want to make them re-think this policy. Many other cruiselines make you check out/in towels with your room key and change up to $25.00 per towel not returned.

You can use the ship towels for their trips or your trips, often one location as you leave the ship has them all.

Note there not too fluffy and if you like comfort they are not that great.

We noticed on our early Feb. cruise aboard the Fantasy that towels only seemed to be available for excursions booked thru DCL with the exception that they were available in the bins at CC. We left DCL feedback on this change. I guess if they don't bring the bins down anymore you can still run up to deck 11 and get some towels for the day.

Be sure to return the towels so we all do our part to not give any more reasons for price increases. :rolleyes2

On our trip last week, DCL-booked excursions had towels in the meeting room. They made an announcement that people who were going on their own should pick up towels from the pool deck before leaving.

I had remebered that on previous cruises that they had towels as you exited the ship however on our cruise last October that wasn't the case anymore. We had to fight the current and get back on the ship and head to deck 11 to grab our towels. Even my DH and DS for their excursion with DCL they had to meet at the peir and towels were not provided. This was an apparent oversite but I would bring a towel regardless just to be sure. They had to dry off with paper towels after their dolphin swim.:rotfl2:

We met at the movie theatre for our Blue Lagoon excursion. Huge stack of towels to take. Definitely take 2 apiece as they are on the smaller side!

Not sure which cruise lines you're referring to. RCI stopped doing this in January.

We just did a Carnival cruise and we had 2 towels in the room:

And there was a towel station on the pool deck where you could check out towels with your sail & sign card:

On HAL, they gave us special towels in our room to used on off ship excursions, that needed to be returned to the room when we got back so the room steward could keep track of them. If you didn't have 2 towels to return, you were charged. But at the pool, they had towels just for taking (different ones than the off-ship ones).

Thanks for the info here.
We are planning a beach day on our own at one of the ports and I was wondering if it was acceptable to take towels from the pool deck and return them when we return
Sounds like maybe I should double check once I am onboard in case there are any policy changes

Just grab them from the pool deck.
Return them to the big bin just outside the ship gangplank.

Thanks for explaining. I haven't sailed on Carnival.

Well, we hadn't either. It was our first on Carnival. Hubby wound up with an extra week off this year and one day said, "Why don't you see if you can find a short, inexpensive cruise out of LA next week?". I reminded him that posing such a question to me will lead to booking a cruise ;). We booked on a Thursday for a Monday departure.

DCL is very relaxed with their pool/beach/excursion towels.

Someone on the DIS reported they were on an excursion, and saw some Disney guests leave their towels behind. (They may have been on a catamaran.) When they asked the tour operator about this, he said he gets around 300 towels a week. (AM and PM tours on multiple catamarans).

I wonder if DCL builds in the cost of pool towels in the cruise fare.

Not always...On our Feb. Fantasy cruise there were no towel at Costa Maya or Cozumel

Agreed on our march sailing, towels were only available on grand cayman, for costa maya and Cozumel you either had to find them at the pool or at one of the excursion meet spots. We didn't make it to castaway, but from previous sailings they are available just off the ship here too

I can confirm there were big bins of towels up for grabs at the gangway when we ported at Nassau and Key West last week on the Wonder.
