Hiya,

I'm looking at the different DVC websites and calculators. I must be getting it wrong. If you can use the points that you buy at any DVC location, why would one pay more for points with a certain home resort? Wouldn't it just make sense to buy the cheapest ones and then book into whatever resort you wanted to stay in that time?

I'm sure there's an obvious answer so please forgive my total igorance... :earboy2:

Thanks,

Beth

You can book your home resort 11 months ahead of time, but only 7 mos ahead at the others. Some resorts are smaller and can be hard to book outside of that 11 month window. If you want to stay at one resort the vast majority of the time, you should buy that resort. But, if you have no strong preference OR simply cannot plan more than 7 mos ahead, it really doesn't matter.

For us, we like the BCV and figured that if at any point, we wanted to sell, it would be a location that would be of great interest. So the higher price wasn't an immediate issue. Also, the advantage of booking 11 months out at your home resort is better if you like where you bought.

Another factor to consider now is that the DVC contracts expire in the year 2042 for OKW, BWV, WLV, and BCV, but will expire in the year 2054 for SSR.

One of my contracts (my 1st one) is for HH and I have never stayed there (yet). We bought HH because the points were cheaper at the time and the annual dues are cheaper. As long as you can be flexible with where you stay it really doesn't matter where you buy your points. However, if you really, really, want to make sure you are able to get into your favorite place, BCV or BWV for example, then you may want to make them your "home base" in order to be able to book at the 11 mo. window.

VB points are the cheapest and most available on the resale market, but their annual maintenance fees are by far the highest.
