Total Nightmare @ Disney

WOW. I read this thread the first day and saw it was answered and never thought of looking again. I did want to see what the problem was. I think it was handled well. The OP was not asking for anything, just wanted it all documented so that it did not happen to someone else. I did not read all the post, but I sorta think this thread got off topic at some point.

To the person who thinks check in starts at 3pm...does check-out time start at 11am?! :thumbsup2

I was thinking the exact same thing.

If the excuse is that it takes too long to clean all the rooms therefore check-in starts at 3, can I say well it takes too long for me to pack and get my family ready by 11 so we'll start then? If my excuse for not leaving by 11 is not valid then neither is there's for not having the room ready. Can we start charging the hotel $10 (or whatever) for every 15 to 30 minutes that we get into our room after 3 or 4?

BTW - I am looking at my reservation and it says check-in at 4 (villas)~ not starts at 4.

no, no, no. Don't you see? Check out ENDS at 11AM ~ you are more than welcome to check out anytime BEFORE 11AM.

I tried to check into a hotel once (non-Disney) for a conference at 3:30 (check in time was at 3) and was told my room wasn't ready yet because a lot of people had asked for late checkouts. I didn't get a room until 5:30 (and this wasn't WDW so I couldn't entertain myself quite as well while I waited). The day before I checked out, I asked for a late checkout. The desk clerk seemed quite put out and huffed "I don't know... a LOT of people are asking for late checkouts." And if I'd thought of it at the time, I would have said "You had no problem keeping my out of my room for an extra 2.5 hours because someone ELSE wanted a late checkout, so I kind of think you owe me that time!" :confused3

Last time we stayed at CBR we arrived right at check-in time and we were told our room was not ready. I requested a different room that WAS ready and was told that was impossible. Checked back one hour later and STILL not ready; they said the carpets had been shampooed and weren't dry. Fine. Finally checked in at 6pm! Funny thing....the carpets obviously had not been shampooed, but looked like they had not even been vacuumed!:sad2:

If Disney's policy states that check-in STARTS at 3pm, then I don't see a problem. I know up-front that I might get access to my room at 3pm, but at the same time, if it's not cleaned and ready to go by 3pm, then it will be sometime AFTER that. Same thing for check-out. I know up-front that I have to be out AT 11am, no later. Unless I've requested/paid for a late check-out.

If you don't agree with their check-in/out timing policy, then don't stay at a Disney resort. Or if your room isn't ready at 3pm, then go to one of the parks, or go get something to eat, whatever. Or stay at a hotel/resort off-site. There are many nice hotels that are not on Disney property.

Sorry, but it's "unacceptable" to have a room check in after 3 p.m. And eh hem, telling me not to stay at a Disney resort is ludicrous. I guess, you think it's okay for Disney to not have a guests room available after 3 because after all it's Disney. Sorry, Disney needs to correct it's problem, maybe they need to hire more housekeepers.

Interestingly, I can't find any sort of check in times on the official web site.

But again, like I said before, the industry standard meaning of check-in time is that your assigned room is ready at that time.

Say you are staying in a villa with a kitchen. On the way you've picked up some groceries. Some of those need to be refrigerated. You arrive at 4:30pm, after check-in time. But your room isn't ready like it should be. What do you do with the groceries? Throw them out?

If I don't pick them up on the way and planned to get them after checking in, I'm now told to go kill time at a park (with only a few hours left of park time, perhaps wasting a day off my ticket), and can't go get my groceries until later, so I have to leave the park early anyways, or waste time on the next day instead of park time I was planning on having.

Again, it is NOT IMPOSSIBLE for Disney to have a majority if not all the rooms ready on time. They are choosing not to.

But Disney policy does not say "Starts at 3PM", in fact there is no such thing at all. This phrase/excuse was invented to cover a problem and since many people not familiar with what should be, they as you say, go to park, eat and so on, instead of getting what they suppose to. Sorry but I expect Disney to follow same rules other resorts do, we are not talking about some 3 rooms motel in a middle of nowhere, we are talking about respected business.

ITA with you re: industry standards.

Just a side thing re: groceries... at a DVC resort, you can leave those with Bell Services as well. They will freeze/refrigerate them as appropriate and bring them up to your room when you call down for them. :thumbsup2

It's been like that for years. Their policy is check-in after 3pm. And yes, I do find it acceptable.

If they said check-in is AT 3pm, and I don't have access to my room until after 3pm, then that would be a problem for me.

Personally, I couldn't care less where you stay.

As far as I'm concerned, it's not a problem, but obviously it is for you.

I checked expedia.com for GF Chech-in 3PM, check-out 11AM. No special notes.

I just copy and pasted this from my reservation email

Arrival: 09/02/2010
Departure: 09/10/2010
Check-In Time: 3:00 PM
Check-Out Time: 11:00 AM

For what it's worth, the DVC site states:

"As a reminder, rooms typically are available for occupancy beginning at 4 p.m."

...and have to tip bell services for something I shouldn't have needed. :(

But what is the problem is too many other guests not leaving at Check Out time? No number of mousekeepers can fix it if there are still people in the room ~ unless they were to literally move all the other peoples belongings out in the hall. I also wonder how many people DO go back to the room after mousekeeping has cleaned and cleared the room? The people that did it while we were there surely can't be the only ones. AND that room had to be recleaned. There are certain things that can't be avoided ~ and no matter the number of people you have ready to clean the rooms ~ if the room is not ready to be cleaned it will not be cleaned.

The cost for late checkout? An extra night.

We always check in FIRST and then once we know we have a room go to the grocery store. It just seemed like a smarter idea. Although like I said at Disney we have pretty much always gotten a room right away. Though at Royal Pacific we waited until way past 8PM the one and only time we stayed there and that was on the Club Level. The room was so dirty I couldn't let the baby get down on the floor, we had no towels, and no crib for the baby ~ that took another 2 hours to straighten out. :confused3 I've never been back. No matter where I had that kind of experience I wouldn't go back. Disney or not.

Ok, but the bottom line is that Disney doesn't have to follow the rules of other hotels. It doesn't appear that they are having any problem getting people to stay at their resorts. As long as people stay at their resorts, and keep coming back to stay at their resorts, they won't change.

I guess for me personally, it's not a problem. If I can't get into my room at 3pm, then it's not a big deal for me. I'll just go and do something else for awhile.
