***************************************************************************

I’m sitting here on my bed with all of the residual “stuff” from our vacation spread out before me. The sheer amount of paper generated by a week’s trip to WDW is fairly mind-boggling, isn’t it? Here are several copies of the maps to all the parks, there are the photos taken at CRT and WTP and on EE, over there are the Magical Moments Certificates we collected along the way. On this side is a stack of twenty-eight used park hopper passes, along with the three FastPass Key Cards from the day in AK when our hoppers didn’t originally work on EE. Up there on the right is our lunch menu from LeCellier and the birthday card DD7 received there as a belated wish, below them are the coasters from the dinner DD and I had at our “girls only” meal at Big River Grill, and here, just under my left knee, are all four of our now-useless “Keys to the World.” In another stack are the calendars for OKW’s resort activities and the OKW newsletter. My coverlet is littered with resort parking permits, stickers, stamps, pressed pennies, pin lanyards, an Epcot Passport. Over here on the left are a few receipts. I pick one of them up: Victoria Falls, 08/01, one Bloody Mary and a Pina Lava Colada. What a memory…our first night in the World, all of us exhausted after being up since 2:30 a.m. PDT to catch our morning flight out of LAX ("too excited to sleep" on the plane!), waiting forever to be seated at Boma, and I just had to head to the bar to try the drink Anc96 suggested before I left home. Smiling at what a memory a seemingly insignificant little receipt can conjure, I suddenly realize with horror: I THREW AWAY almost all the other receipts! What was I THINKING!!!???

I’m not a scrapbooker, and I’m not much of a packrat, either, but looking at all this memorabilia before me, I kind of wish I were. These miscellaneous remnants and paper memories of our seven days at WDW tell such a story, even without the now-lamented missing receipts. When I think back to the moment almost four months ago when we decided for sure to spend our vacation money on WDW this year, it was hard to guess how wonderfully the memories would have turned out in the end.

All good trip reports provide a little background, and I would be remiss if I didn’t do so here before continuing on. Why did we decide to go to WDW instead of somewhere else? Frankly, and initially, because for us it was going to be relatively cheap (and I hear that disbelieving laughter as I place “WDW” and “cheap” into the same sentence). You see, my DH is a cast member at DLR who sees the mouse and all the rest of the gang five to six days a week. So, while he first suggested WDW as a vacation spot, he also didn’t really want to go. In his mind, WDW was going to be just a gigantic version of what he sees everyday, and if you try to imagine getting excited about going on vacation to see what you already see at work about 275 days a year – no matter how much you enjoy your job – it’s not going to seem terribly inspiring. He was willing mostly because of his discounts and because he wanted to see Orlando again, as he lived there until he was about 7 years old (just before Walt started developing all that land) and has some good memories. He’s also a good husband and father who wants his family to have fun even if he thinks he’s not really going to, so he told me to go ahead and make the plans and he, by his very existence as a DLR CM, would make it possible. It was immediately made clear, though: this would be a once in a lifetime trip, so we’d better enjoy it while we could.

And who are “we”? Well, you know my DH already, the reluctant CM. He does behind-the-scenes stage work for many of your favorite DLR shows, and if Tinkerbell needed any help besides pixie dust (which, of course, she doesn’t!) to fly over Sleeping Beauty’s Castle during Remember Dreams Come True? Well, he’d be the guy to lend a hand. Me, I’m his English professor wife who spends so much time being serious and “adult” at work all school year that a vacation to WDW (or even a too-frequent visit to DLR) sounds heavenly. I desperately need fun! Being the academic I am, I always insist on educating myself to the fullest about anything I undertake, and that’s how I got hooked on the DISboards (and the secret green club) while planning this trip. Our DS16, who is usually too cool for anything liked by anyone younger than 15.5, is a good boy who gets good grades and hasn’t had any really big vacations yet in his lifetime. Our drama-queen DD, who is actually quite a sweet girl at heart, turned 7 while we were in the World.

In making initial reservations, first we chose the Beach Club…standard room, two queen size beds. It only took a couple of weeks of real thought about this plan to decide it was not going to work: we love each other, yes. But a whole week in ONE ROOM is just more togetherness than any of us can handle, so we regrouped and readjusted our ressies to stay in a 1 br. villa at OKW instead, which turned out to be an astoundingly good decision. Over the next 3.5 months, I planned meticulously (with the help of the DISboards) what to bring and what to do in our short time in the World. The following trip report is a chronicle of our experiences: the reluctant cast member, the starved-for-fun wife/mother/teacher (who, incidentally, broke her middle left toe exactly 8 days before the trip - hence, the "Toetoe" in this TR's title - haha! The first of what surely will be many bad jokes), the too-cool teenager, and the 7 year old drama-queen diva from So Cal. Mission: one week at WDW to make memories to last a lifetime.

Next up: Day One - We arrive!

I'm honored that you're reading my trip report.

We woke up super early on Tuesday, 8/1 (2:30 a.m. for me and DH, 3:15 for the kids) and got out the door by 4:00. We made it to LAX by 5:15, which was 2 hours before our flight, but DH had to drop off the car with his friend, so he didn’t get back to the airport until about 6:00 a.m. That done, we went through TSA security and waited for our flight. While we waited, we had some Starbucks coffee and a few danishes, DD7 played with some little girl for awhile, and then it was time to board the plane.

The flight was relatively uneventful, if long and we arrived about 5 minutes early at MCO. Good thing we were early  : we waited forEVER for our luggage at the luggage carousel. This was the first moment we second-guessed our decision to rent a car and do everything ourselves instead of using DME to transport us and our luggage to the resort. Why didn’t we do this? Well, DH wanted the car to get around to the resorts, the grocery store, and other places the busses take a long time to get to, and in theory, it was a good idea. Really, getting the car was very easy for DH, who went to fetch it from Emerald Aisle while the rest of us waited for luggage, but…we still had to wait for the luggage. A LONG TIME.

Eventually our luggage came around and we got out of the airport. Another reason to take DME: No one (namely DH) needs to get stressed out trying to figure out Florida traffic laws and WDW signs while they’re on vacation. More on this later – the car was useful, but not conducive to relaxation. His blood pressure must have been as high as Yosemite Sam’s on the drive from MCO to WDW. We did pause a moment in our crisis negotiations as we drove through the famous arch (hey, how lost could we possibly be now?!)

Being the psychically-connected family we are, though, he naturally had us all completely riled by the time we finally pulled into the OKW parking lot. Greeeat way to start a nice soothing vacation! To make matters worse, as we pulled up, the DME bus we would have been on was already unloaded and on it’s way back to MCO, and all I could think was “It could have been that easy.” This marks Thing #1 That I Will Do Differently Next Time.

We made it to the resort about 5:00 p.m. and were almost instantly cured of the aforementioned family angst. OKW is beautiful! Our villa was huge and there was plenty of room for the four of us. We wanted to just kick off our shoes and settle right in. But, as exhausted as we were, we decided that since we had an 8:30 ADR for Boma that first evening, we’d head over to Animal Kingdom first to ride EE. We knew we wouldn’t have time to do much else in the park before it closed (as it was 6:00 p.m. when we got there and the park closed that evening at 7:00) but we figured this would give us time to start off the vacation with a little excitement and we’d have plenty of time to get over the AKL by 8:30.

I knew my toe was going to be a problem, but oh! how it ached that first evening. I was genuinely worried that I wasn’t going to be able to walk around the other parks without assistance if I was in such discomfort walking through a small part of AK to EE and back. I swallowed some ibuprofen, though, and prayed it would get better and not worse. DD bonked her foot at grandma’s house a few days earlier and her sandal strap was rubbing the wound and bothering her. We couldn’t use moleskin on a scab, so instead put on a bandaid. It didn’t stick very well, so in a little bit we put on another – the last of the two I had been carrying. This one didn’t stick, either, so we wondered a bit whether that was a result of the humidity since these particular bandaids hadn’t come from the dollar store (hey, you know what I’m saying about cheap bandages and q-tips, right?) We decided right then that sneakers and socks would be worn for the remainder of the trip.

Off across the park to EE, DH in the lead like he was late to put out a fire, DS following trying to keep up, DD shuffling along with her flapping bandage, and me limping gingerly to bring up the rear. When we got to the ride, we saw a lot of people milling around and wondered what was going on. People were walking up to the line and then wandering away, so we went up to the front of the queue and asked what was going on. The ride was down, the cast member told us, but if we wanted to wait, she was sure it would be opening back up soon. So, we waited. Right there. At the front of the line. Everyone else was walking away. Does this seem somehow unnatural to you? So, we considered this our good fortune and decided to give it 30 minutes and see how things went in terms of them solving the problem and getting the ride going again. After all, THIS is what we came here solely to do this evening.

Have I mentioned before now how HOT it was?? At 6:00 p.m.?? It was exactly like FL in August is supposed to feel. Ok, yes, southern California has had 115 days lately, but the humidity in FL makes that seem almost nice. DD was sweating, wanting to stand in the shade and then saying “It’s not helping!” It was very muggy and sticky and people (us) got cranky very quickly. Yet, still, we decided to wait for this ride. As it turns out, GOOD decision! After about 15 minutes, the ride opened back up and we virtually walked on. DD got really nervous before riding, but, hey, too bad…we’re GOING! We (including DD) *loved* this ride!! It was very exciting, thrilling, scary and the perfect way to start our vacation. Va-bear had sent me a certificate for a free picture on EE, so we picked that up before we left and headed over to Animal Kingdom Lodge. Here’s the picture. For some reason, Disney edited our hair so it’s not green!!!

Now that the first fire was out, DH was in a hurry to get to the next one as we headed for the park exit. True, it was 6:50 by then and people were heading en masse for the exit, but a) hurrying could not change this situation now, and b) MY TOE HURTS! This is the moment we have The Talk: this family is just going to have to be courteous and conscious of my inability to keep a normal pace and anyone who doesn’t like it is welcome to push the wheelchair. Having gotten that straight, we proceeded at a much more leisurely pace to the car and headed over to AKL

We got to AKL about 7:35 thinking that if we were a bit early for our reservation we’d get seated a bit early. No, it was not to be. We could have checked out the resort pretty well in the time we held onto that vibrating, light flashing “your-table-is-ready” beeper thing, but we were tired, my toe hurt, and we were under the illusion that we would be called very soon anyway. So, we sat there like zombies, not exploring anything at all except what was in our immediate line of sight, and that was mostly food to which we did not yet have access. We sat there for about 45 minutes until 8:20, which was almost our ADR time anyway. Thing #2 That I Will Do Differently Next Time: Not show up for an ADR an hour early. The only good part about this was remembering that ANC96 had told me to get a Pina Colava from Victoria Falls, at which point I went up the steps and ordered one along with a Bloody Mary for DH. He mellowed out immediately because he doesn’t drink much, so a Bloody Mary is a sure calm-inducer. I don’t think there was as much alcohol in my yummy drink as there was supposed to be, but I didn’t have the strength to get up the stairs again to ask about it. Still we waited to be called for a table. By this time, we were all so tired and hungry we thought we’d never be able to enjoy the meal, but in the end it was sooo good that we loved it anyway. There were so many interesting items on the line that we really ate as much as we wanted and then attacked the dessert bar. My favorite was the zebra domes. VERY rich, but I enjoyed them very much. DD and DS said the cheesecake was their favorite. However, this leads me to Thing #3 That I Will Do Differently Next Time: no ADR for the first night we stay – it’s much less stressful to just eat wherever when you’re ready than try to meet another deadline in a day already rife with them.

Back at the resort (after DH freaked OUT again driving back because he thought he was lost, but he actually wasn’t), we decided that the kids weren’t going to sleep on the pull out couch together. There was barely room for DS, whose feet hung over the end most nights. Fortunately, DD is still small enough that she slept on the loveseat without any problems and this is the arrangement we took up for the rest of the week. After the kids literally dropped into sleep, DH started a bath in the Jacuzzi tub and we took turns getting relaxed and refreshed. Then he turned on a movie and I got caught up in that and stayed awake until about 12:30 a.m. Everyone else had been asleep for a couple of hours by the time I finally closed my eyes and fell asleep myself.

Next up: Day 2 – A Magic Kingdom morning and a brief evening foray into Epcot

SHOWOFF!!!! :rolleyes1

First day back and you are writing a TR! :teeth:

Yes it is amazing how much PAPER work you accumulate in WDW! I held onto EVERYTHING...for reference sake in a WDW shopping bag.

Will scan one tomorrow. We got one on checkin and one for DD's birthday breakfast at CRT!

Go, DISUNC, go! Can't wait to read your TR, too. I am sure my writing momentum will take a hit in a few days, though, as work starts to heat back up. I have to use the time while I can!

Oops felt bad I didn't warn you about arriving way too early for ADR's!
AND NEVER MAKE ANY DEFINITE PLANS FOR THE FIRST NIGHT!

Band-AID make a "rubberized" bandage that sticks to anything as if it was skin...NEVER COMES OFF!!!! Very very good....use these all the time! They are in a silver shiny box! :thumbsup2

Yes driving around WDW can be very confusing.....sometimes with all the busses around you dont see the turn off lanes that you need fast enough. Everytime I drive to Epcot I always wind up in AK....EVERY YEAR make the same mistake.

popcorn:: more more more!

I am working now thru next Wednesday am....straight 12 hour shifts! AGGGGGGGGH

I love the title, and I love the Yeti picture. Too cute. I went through my receipts today and threw out most of them. Each one tells a story though, doesn't it?
I'm afraid to drink alcohol on the first night of a big trip, ever since our first trip to Hawaii when I had a mai tai at dinner that first night, and had to go to sleep by 8 p.m. If I had a broken toe, however, I might want that.

Cyn... Great Start! I can't wait for more!

I'm sorry your toe gave you so much trouble :(

The first couple of times in WDW we'd get SOOOO lost driving around..lol. Now it's not so bad at all. I did have some trouble to Epcot a few times, I'm not sure why. I guess I was missing the turn off. I do recognize the area enough to know when I've passed where I'm supposed to be, so I turn can turn around when I notice it. And I'll turn pretty much anywhere! The medians are pretty level :rolleyes1
We find a rental car a must have... but we stay pretty long and do other 'places' and dinner shows while we're there. If I get there for a few days at Halloween time this year (which at this time seems like more wishful thinking than anything else).. we will be using ME. I think bus transport would be fine for shorter stays.
An ADR for the first day at a different resort than where you're staying, I agree, not a good idea. I always make and ADR for where we are the first day, even if it's just switching resorts. We had Boma for our first day at AKL.. and Whispering Cayons for our first day at WL. It's just so much easier already being there.. then after dinner we'll usually use the pool, then go to our room. All very relaxing. Oh.. and no more than 15 minutes before an ADR. I learned that too when we showed up earlier and were usually seated about the same time as our original time anyway.
I hope you got to see more of AKL sometime in your trip.. it's really an awesome resort!
About those flashing beeper thingies... they have a pretty good range. We were at the Concourse at The Contemporary waiting to be seated, and I thought I'd lost my camera... I HAD to go down to the car to see if I'd left it in there even though they were supposed to call us any minute. But, this was my camera! So we went down the elevator and we were waiting for the valet to bring the car back and the vibrator thingies started shaking and blinking! I was really surprised it worked from so far! Oh and yes.. the camera was in the car... whew!
So next time you can look around a bit of where ever you happen to be.. you don't have to stay 'right there' like I'd thought.

Oh.. I LOVE the title!!

Yikes, sorry you were having so much toe trouble-- probably should have called for a tow-truck! ;) Nice family picture-- miss the lime though. :( Good for you setting them straight with the family talk! :thumbsup2 I can't believe you stayed awake so long-- you must have really been miserable. :(

Waiting for more!!! :cool1:

Omg Cyn! That tr is Great!!!! I can not WAIT to read the whole thing once I'm back from the Mutherland !!! I'm so sorry your toe was bothering you!! :( And your family is adorable! Ok, this may sounds weird but, your so mature I figured you were about 40, but you dont look older then 29!!
