To those who live in Orlando

My husband and I are seriously thinking about moving to central Florida. I know we don't want to live right near the attractions, because we'd like to be able to get home. Other than that, can someone give me a general idea of where would be a good place to look? Probably a suburb? Mainly we'd be looking for a low crime rate and good schools. Also, we'd like to be property and build as we can afford it. Any advice?? Anyone??

Sanford??? It's quite beautiful there.....just do your research before you decide to do anything....there are lots of great suburbs around Orlando.....

There are a lot of choices around Orlando, but it really depends on where the job is. You will spend a LOT of time commuting if you live at one end of the city and work in the other. Especially here!
You mentioned you wanted a lot of property. Most of the areas like Hunters Creek, Metro West and Dr Philips areas are just standard lot sizes. If you want more space, head out a little north of Winter Garden. There are a few little towns where you may find what you are looking for.

There is also other areas, if you want to be a little further out (to have an excuse to stay at the resorts), you also might want to look at Daytona (near I-4); St. Augustine (for the coast) or look to Gainesville/Ocala area, depending on the job situation.

We are in the SE part of Orlando, about 30 minutes from WDW and not a tourist in sight! It is a very up and coming area with lots of new developments popping up everywhere, but we love it.

We live in Altamonte Springs, just north of Orlando. We love the area and love the schools but not much land for building. Sanford is a good area and if you want to go a little further, I know the price of houses in Deland are much lower then they are closer to Orlando.

I'm in Clermont where the schools are OK and improving. Still lots of land you can buy here. It's 25 miles +/- to downtown, 25 minutes to WDW, and not at all touristy.

We live in Lake Mary and love it!

We can drive to the attractions on the weekends and that is fine with us... We lived in South Orlando for a few years and it got really old with tourist driving! Our car insurance went down $30 per month just from moving from South Orlando to North Orlando! - I just found this out yesterday and I am excited about it!

I would also suggest Hunter's Creek as well...

When you say you don't want to be too close to the attractions, how "not close" is that?

My DSIL lives in Barefoot Bay, which is on the east coast, between Melbourne and Vero. But if you cut a swath across the center of Florida from east to west, Barefoot Bay would be contained within the "swath". So it's technically in the center swath of Florida, but not smack in the middle like Orlando is. She's about a 1-1.5 hour drive from WDW.

Anyway, Barefoot Bay and its surrounding towns are a nice area. She has been very happy there.
