To poncho or not???

Poncho's for sure! They are not that hot (as the air temp seems to dip duringthe actual storm), and the rain there can tend to be less of te resfreshing shower to the feeling of standing in the line of a fire hose while others are dumping buckets on you.

How about umbrellas? Can you bring them into the parks? We would be more comfortable with umbrellas rather than hot sticky plastic.

You are allowed to bring them in the parks, and while you may be comfortable, others around you may not... umbrellas seem to rank right up there on these threads with refillable mugs, pool hopping, and saying that it's your birthday. Just a warning.

(Personally, as long as it doesn't end up in my face, I don't care if you have an umbrella... you may be mistaken for Mary Poppins, though:umbrella: )

:umbrella: Target sells the mini-brella that folds up to the size of a deck and one-half of cards. Fits perfectly in a small daypack and it only opens to 40". The standard umbrella is 43-45". Comes with a little zip up soft plastic pouch. It's perfect for the parks. :)

Last 6/3 Friday during the deluge...worst flooding I have ever seen at the Magic Kingdom or WDW in 30 years. A ladie came running to the area I was standing with an umbrella. :umbrella: She managed to be just the right hieght to poke me with one of her unbrella spokes near my eye...I'm not sure they are the best form of protection as she was drenched and I was almost blinded. Just be sure to keep umbrellas out of other peoples personal space.

:earseek: Well I had no idea people felt that strongly against umbrellas. I'm not a pool hopper so I guess I'm an okay person.

And I want to know who made up the lie that the parks empty out when it rains... 6/3 MK - case in point!!! I couldn't believe how crowded it stayed despite that miserable day!! (We were there 8:30AM - 10PM... seemed pretty darn busy to me!!)

Yeah, I've seen some pretty ugly umbrella threads, tho' I never thought much about them til last weeks swim through MK.

The deluge caught so many people off guard, it had been raining off and on all morning then...DUMP...Main Street was underwater I have never seen the street flood like it did. I guess most people figured they were already as wet as they could get, so they just stayed. Or they had stayed away earlier in the week and they needed to get out to try a few rides.

Hopefully after 4 pages on this thread, the OP will still read my story:

My husband and I went to WDW for the 4th of July a few years ago. During our 5 day stay, we were caught in the rain on two different occasions! I'm not just talking a rain drop....it continually poured both times for a few hours. The first time was at MK, and the second time, DD. Both times we were caught without ponchos. So YES, ponchos are nessesary in those types of rain storms. You might think it's nice to be wet after a rain storm, but with all the humidity in Florida it takes forever for your clothes to dry. So it does get uncomfortable walking around in soaking-wet clothing.

One advantage to the rain storms we encountered was that the parks quickly emptied with sworms of families. They headed back to their resorts while we got ponchos, and enjoyed having the park to ourselves.

Thanks,
Diznee25

We were also at MK on 06/03 during the deluge and were perfectly happy to be dry under our "hooded garbage bags." We weren't hot and sticky because if it wasn't cool and rainy, we weren't wearing them. Plus, we took them off as soon as we were in a sheltered line. The people who were w/o ponchos or umbrellas definitely weren't drying off because, as has been noted, the rain never stopped long enough! We spent a grand total of $1.50 for our three ponchos, they were well worn, did their jobs, didn't tear and we threw them away when we checked out of our resort. Given the chance, I wouldn't do anything differently.

We were having lunch in Pinnochio's when the worst of it really dumped... so we hit IASW, then were planning on getting an FP for Pooh... instead, we decided to wait in the 40 min. standby line (which was covered)... by the time we got through, the worst of the deluge had passed.

(We live in Central FL... so fire-hose strength rain is nothing new to us... between the time that we walked into and out of church on this past Sunday, we got 3.5 inches of rain.)

Hey, we were in Pinnochio's when it started pouring, too! My Alien Green Mickey head was even on our backpack.

You said you liked keeping "boundaries around your personal space" But instructed other to "duck." You should also respect others and their personal space. I'm not saying you wouldn't, but I'm sure the young lady that was running and hit me in the face with her umbrella wasn't thinking of hitting me. She was just trying to get out of the rain, not realizing her unbrella extended into my body which is my personal space.

Wow! I'm going to the dollar store this weekend to get our poncho's. I don't want to start a fight or something in WDW. Afterall it is the Happiest Place On Earth! :flower:

My "duck" comment was a lame attempt at humor. I apologize for offending you. I am a polite, quiet and easy-going person and I don't complain and whine about the little things in life, especially if I'm in WDW. (This is no reference to you, I'm just stating a fact about myself.) When I use my mini-brella, I normally am aware of my surrounding, I'm never close enough to poke anyone in the eye. And yes, I will continue to use my mini-brella, and yes if it hits anyone (which it hasn't because no one is ever that close to me) I will apologize. If my small umbrella touchs you--I apologize--we need space.
Interesting, when someone stated in another thread how they fart on people who are too close to them, that was okay and funny to inhale a stranger's intestinal gases. :crazy2: I guess mini-brellas are more offensive and dangerous than I ever imagined. Oh well...I will be extra careful with my umbrella. :) And that's no joke.

Just got back from 6-3 to 6-11 trip and it rained EVERY day...I too brought the $1 store ponchos and that is what they are worth...IMHO I would invest in a nicer one or one at WDW for $7. BTW the umbrella's weren't that big of a deal. Didn't bother me at all...used mine along with thousands of others, no one seemed to get annoyed. :umbrella:

Tropical Depression Arlene and I were at WS about the same time last Saturday afternoon and I was really glad I had a poncho. It kept me dry and let me wander in and out of the shops as much as I wanted. I did not get hot and sweaty as the rain was fairly cool.

although me & my fiance look really cute in a poncho picture at wdw, i will never wear one again. the rain poncho makes me steaming hot & like another diser said with the hot outside in the rain & the cold inside on some attractions & stores i got sick on our caribbean beach 02 trip. i even had a temper tantrum from the heat & my fever at epcot one evening & literally ripped the poncho off me. we have been happily using an umbrella ever since.

I have to pipe in and add my vote to a mini umbrella! Years ago we tried the WDW ponchos, but when we were there, it was too hot under the plastic. The umbrella kept our heads and upper torso dry, and was easy to transport. There was no way to keep the feet dry, which seemed most annoying. After awhile, luckily, the tennies and socks dried up and by the time we left the park we forgot about all the rain earlier in the day!

Everyone has their preferences on this, and you'll find out what you like best once you try it! Have fun! We haven't found many people leaving because of rain, so grab cover and enjoy! :sunny:
