An Angel Flew My Way
by Larry Miller
I have photographed children for over 20 years. One Thanksgiving I received a special gift from one of them. Emily was sitting on the floor all dressed in white. She was a cuddly 6 month old reclining in her carrier.
"Emily's not doing well today", the mom said. The little girl did seem flushed and her head wobbled side to side as she tried to sit up straight. I tried several exposures but to no avial. Finally, I got close to Emily's face and started talking to her. "You look like an angel," I said. Suddenly the child paused and her wobbly head came to attention. She looked at me as if to say, I'm okay, I just had a bad day. Since Emily looks like an angel, that's the way I'm going to photograph her! I decided.
In my studio I keep a set of pure white angel wings made out of real duck down, soft and white. I also gave her a small crown of flowers. Cuddled in her seat and nestled in the clouds I began to photograph my angel.
I hadn't noticed, but the mother was softly crying. "She is an angel. We just found out yesterday that she was born with a rare brain defect. This will be our first and last Thanksgiving together", she sobbed. They don't live past the first year. When I was carrying her, I did everything the doctor said to do. No smoking, I watched my diet, but her brain will not develop any more than it did at birth. There are only 435 known cases of this rare defect.
"You saw Emily here for what she really is, an angel, and we love her so. She's our little angel that fluttered down to earth to tell us that God wants us to appreciate what we have. You saw that in her, too. Sometimes you can be talking to her and she becomes so peaceful and calm. She starts to baby talk and you can almost make out her words. It's as if she's really trying to tell you something.. These pictures are really important. We don't know how much longer she'll be with us. You've captured our little angel forever."
With a lump in my throat, I said "Thank you for sharing your little angel with me. I'm thankful she flew in my direction!"
