Tipping?

Folks, just a warning: if this turns into the usual absurd "people who tip are suckers"/"people who don't tip are cheapskates" debate, this thread will be closed faster than quick. We've heard all the arguments for both sides, dozens of times. We don't need to hear them again.

I agree.

Tipping is not required for Disney housekeepers -their wage is higher than that paid to tipped positions like restaurant servers, bartenders and bell services, but many guests prefer to leave tips for the housekeepers. You can tip whatever you'd prefer to tip but most guests prefer to tip each day, because it might not be the same housekeeper from day to day. It's entirely up to you how much to tip and when, because there is no "going rate" that is considered "acceptable" like that for restaurant servers.

Tipping isn't guaranteed to get you towel animals though.

I know tipping doesn't guarantee towel animals, but it would be nice to make them happy enough to want to go above and beyond. They have had work. I know it is up to each person and $4 a day won't make or break them, but if I can bring a little smile to their face it is worth it to me. I had fun picking out envelopes and getting them ready to leave out. We are still about 19 days out, but I am excited.

We tipped $5 a day and never got anything cute. I was hoping they would move around. The kids stuffed animals etc. like it have heard other people have experienced but, no big deal :) so tipping, even in cute envelopes, doesn't guarantee anything except hopefully making the cleaner happy!

I'm barista for certain Seattle based coffee corporation you may have heard of (there's one on main street if you still can't figure it out). I feel like this is often debated among our customers. So here's my opinion for what it's worth. I have customers come in everyday that don't tip, and it's fine, we don't think any less of them or think they are cheap. I still greet them with a smile remember their name and beverage to the best of my ability. We also have regulars who do tip consistently, I will tell you we tend to go a little more above and beyond for these individuals, them tipping is a great way of saying thanks we return that by doing a little extra ie, giving them a beverage on us if they look like they're having a rough day. We do this for all customers from time to time regardless, but we generally do it more often for those who tip, right or wrong its easy to go the extra mile for the person who tossed their change in the tip jar instead of their pocket. You may take that into consideration at hotels. It may make a difference.

We where there from Dec 4-15 stayed at POP Century. I was tipping $1/person/day- I finally got fed up with housekeeping on the 4th day- they never took our garbage out, and never really made our bed- top sheet was clumped in a ball -sometimes left on bed- sometimes left on floor. We had black mold also in our room- by sink which I thought is was a black stain on the carpet until by the 4th day it was huge! This was our first time staying onsite and we also were on the DDP. After I called and management had to come up and take garbage out and then they just bleached the floor- housekeeping even got worse! Sorry I am not tipping for poor service! I had better service at Motel 6! I was so surprised that they didn't move us out of that hotel room because of the mold- we all got sick and could not get out of bed for 2 days- finally almost a week home I am finally feeling better! I would of thought for being on Disney property we would of seen some "magic" somewhere- other than parks. I will think twice on ever coming back and staying onsite! So disappointed. I would never recommend Disney resort to anyone- is there a way to tell Disney about this?

What the heck, I'll put in my two cents. Tipping is not required and hopefully, not expected by members of housekeeping but is normally appreciated. I work as a hairstylist, tipping is a fairly recognized practice. However, I never EXPECT a tip. Whatever people leave me on top of the amount of the service it is a gift and I personally thank everyone of clients who hands me gratuity but I never think differently of a client who does not. In my personal opinion, I tip anyone who touches me or my personal belongings as an "extra". (Housekeeping, bell service, waiters, even sometimes photo pass if they do an exceptional job and always bbb godmothers). And it does make the CMs feel appreciated for all that they do to make the magic happen.

It is their job which they are paid to do. I don't like how tipping has crept into so many professions that haven't historically been tipped positions so I don't participate. You may do so if you'd like. How about I don't tell you who you should or shouldn't tip and you don't tell me who I should or shouldn't tip and we all live in harmony together?

I'm sorry did I tell you who should tip...I just asked why someone wouldn't tip?

Why wouldn't you tip a lot of people daily? Why don't you tip the college graduate who makes $10/hr teaching and caring for your preschool child with autism (including changing diapers, cleaning up vomit when he is sick, etc.)? The reason is that you are already paying for their salary by paying for your child to go to preschool or paying for your hotel room. Disney says it is not a tipped position. Housekeepers have free will to work for what the wage is or not. Sure it is nice to leave a tip, but not required and no one should have to feel bad if they don't tip. For the record, I usually do leave a few bucks, but I understand not handing dollar bills to everyone who performs a service for you.

Well I don't have a child with autism AND I'm a stay at home mom so my children don't go to daycare at all...why are ppl getting so offended by me asking a WHY question. Do you get that offended when a toddler ask why? (Which is all the time I may add). And S/N when my husband and I get to have a night out and we PAY a babysitter we do tip if the babysitter brings a craft to do with my kids or tidy up the kitchen without me having to ask. Not because it's required of me but because it shows appreciation and when ppl feel appreciated :)

I think that tipping in general is a way of subsidizing companies. It seems our culture puts the responsibility on the client to both pay for the service and then supplement the income of the service provider. Who wins? Seems to me it's the company. Not the client and not the person providing the service. I don't think 8 dollars an hour is a living wage.

That said we tip pretty much all service providers in some way. Even that preschool teacher in the way of a check or visa gift card a few times throughout the year. The fact is though that tipping is not mandatory and no one should feel bad for not doing it.

I started traveling for business around 1980 and it was customary back then to tip housekeeping. It isn't new.
