Tipping the Velvet movie question..

No, its not that question.. I know what tipping the velvet is.

I was watching this the other day, and missed about 40 minutes of it. I'd like someone to fill in some of the holes.

I began watching it in the beginning and then watched up to where Nan goes to London with Kitty. Kitty had her first debut and bombed.

I had to run an errand and wound up turning it on as Nan (no longer with Kitty) is in drag and a man speaks to her.

What happened to Kitty and Nan? From what I could gather, Nan really liked Kitty but Kitty stated she wanted to be "sisters". Did Kitty and Nan get together? What happened with the gig?

Anyway, I also missed how Nan got to that awful womans house to live... how did Nan get that arrangement?

I caught most of it but missed probably 45 important minutes. Can anyone fill me in?

Okay - I saw it for the first time on Logo the other day so someone correct me if I get any specifics wrong.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD - CAUTION IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE/WANT TO BE SURPRISED

Nan and Kitty did get together/fall in love and did the act together as well as being lovers for about 6 months. One day Kitty and their male manager (?) had some business meetings to attend to so Nan went home to visit her family and brought them very nice gifts which all appreciated except Nan's sister. When Nan tells her sister about her relationship with Kitty her sister is disgusted and Nan ends up leaving early feeling completely alone and shut out of her family with only Kitty to fall back on. When she gets back to their room (again a few days early) Kitty and the manager are there, having obviously slept together, and they inform Nan they are getting married. Nan freaks out, runs away, comes back when they are gone and takes all the drag clothes and runs off.

She starts to dress in drag and discovers she can make good money as a streetwalker servicing men. She moves into a nicer room with the money she is making and tries to befriend the maid from across the street but runs off from having tea with her when she starts to feel ashamed about what she does for a living. BTW - this maid ends up being Flo from later in the movie who she goes to when the evil woman beats her up and kicks her out.

One night she is picked up by a man who begins to rape her when he is pulled off by another burly man who Nan assumes is the constable and she pleads it was her first time and please don't hurt her. He says he isn't the constable and takes her into a carriage where Mrs. Lethaby is waiting. Nan is very scared and says she is not a boy and not what she is looking for and Mrs. Lethaby laughs and says she knows what she is, she has been watching her for awhile and Nan is exactly what she is looking for. She takes Nan home and gives her a night of pure pleasure (it is assumed, not really shown) and asks if she wants to stay with her and basically be her sex slave. Nan is somewhat frightened but very intriguied and turned on so she agrees and becomes her companion.

Sounds like that is where you came back in. Any questions? Anyone else - did I get anything wrong?

Thanks for the help... I sort of thought that the male manager got together with Kitty, but I wasn't exactly sure.

So the person who pulled off Kitty was NOT a constable? I sort of turned it on when that was happening but didn't understand the context.

Now that I know that, that makes more sense..

I think the BBC did a wonderful job with the miniseries...but the book, So much better!

I have the Dvd so I have never watched it on Logo. My question is did they run it unedited or did they feel the need to censor that also?

Yeah - they definitely did edit for Logo. I want to get the DVD on Netflix now and see what was cut out!

Hi, I am new here.

I love Sarah Waters books, so this drew me in. I saw "Tipping the Velvet" but it was so long ago that I don't remember much about it. Excited to know about the un-edited version and Netflix has it? No idea they had gay and lesbian movies. Need to check it out.

Netflix has a ton of not just gay/lesbian movies but all kinds of special interest, indie, smaller stuff which is the reason we cancelled our Blockbuster mailorder subscription and stuck with Netflix. I went a little crazy on the PBS specials too - LOL! I think my queue is at about 115 right now that will take me a year to get through And yes - I did add Tipping the Velvet unrated version to my queue yesterday so it is definitely there.

Some totally fascinating latin derivations -- if you catch my drift.

Oooooh, me too! Or, close to it. I actually had my parents' persmission, at a young age, to read and check out "mature" books - but one day, as I brought an armload of such to check out, a new librarian forbid it. Ooooooh, I was SO angry!!!

I would never have had the guts to look up "interesting" words in the dictionary while in school! The most I did was sneek peeks at a book my parents bought expaining sex and babies, which was kept in the closet!

Blockbuster online has a a specific section on the website for Gay and Lesbian movies. There seems to be new releases in that section every week.

thanks for the info on Blockbuster. will check out that one too. are they edited versions? Last time I went into a blockbuster they had a lot of edited R rated movies.
btw, love the tag about spraying furniture polish into the air! that's my kind of cleaning!

I just never liked the Blockbuster selection that much - I liked the wide variety on Netflix better...I am addicted to Indie movies, documentaries, and PBS specials though and Netflix has more than I could ever imagine watching!!! Blockbuster just always seemed more limited - although we did like being able to print off the free movie coupons and get something spur of the moment from BLockbuster. But Netflix just won out in the end in our household

I looked at Netflix and was impressed at the range of movies as well as the volume. I think Netflix has won out. I enjoy indie movies quite a bit as well as documentaries and PBS has some outstanding shows that I usually miss. The American Masters series is one. Good to know where to rent them. i was thinking wouldn't it be great to get a movies and discuss them here. Logistics would be terrible though.
