I'm heading out in 2 weeks for a week long camping trip. I have a list of books to take with me, but I'm always interested in what other DIS'ers are reading right now. Anyone got any good reads to suggest? I'm interested in all genres, so anything goes!

Let the list begin!

I'm reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle right now. So far it's excellent.

Glynis-I finished The J.A.P. Chronicles while you were gone....pretty good. and I am reading What is the What now........FABULOUS so far. I have a couple more waiting to be read...I'll tell you more as I read them.

Thanks, Theresa! I know we have pretty much the same taste in books! I look forward to hearing from you.

I just finished "The Shakespeare Secret" by J. L. Carrell. It was an interesting read. Nothing spectacular, but a lot of fun!

Hi Glynis!

Here is the list of what I read on our recent vacation, with some comments:

Kate Atkinson: Behind the Scenes at the Museum and Case Histories.
I liked Case Histories more than BTSATM, which took me a while to get into. Neither was a particular favorite.

Indu Sundaresan: Splendor of Silence. Definitely recommend. I liked it as much as the 20th wife.

John Shors: Beneath a Marble Sky. Really loved this book.

Peter Hessler: Oracle Bones. I read this because I was thinking about John's upcoming (now past) trip to China. It is fascinating, but kind of long.

Sophie Kinsella: Shopoholic and Baby. Fluffy fluff. I can't remember a thing about it. Except that she has a baby at the end. It might have been twins, I don't remember.

Suzannah Dunn: The 6th Wife. Meh. There are many more books out there on the Tudor folks that are better.

Phillipa Gregory: Wideacre. Yuck, yuck, yuck! I really don't need to read about incest, thankyouverymuch. Apparently this is the first in a three-book series. I won't be reading the other two.

Elizabeth Von Arnim: The Enchanted April. Loved it! So funny and light. A perfect vacation book.

John Grisham: The Appeal. It took until about page 124 before I really got caught up in the story, but once I did, I liked it. I thought is was an interesting idea. I'd actually like to see him write another book about the main character, so I could see how his thinking evolves as he gets more experience on the bench.

I am reading "Love the one you are with" by Emily Giffin right now. Very light, very chick lit, and a great book for those of us who thought about our exes a little more than we would like to admit....;)

I am reading Jimmy Buffets "salty piece of land." It is a great summer read. It is a long book, but so far the story is good and has a nice summery, island, margarita, pirate type of feel to it......in other words it's very Jimmy Buffet!

These all sound wonderful! Keep 'em coming! I love to add to my list!

I am finally reading Gone With the Wind. It's big, I plan to take it on our beach vaca next weekend...so far so good.

I am reading Over the Edge: Death in the Grand Canyon. Great book for anyone who may be visiting there this summer.

I second this. I recently read this book, plus 2 others by Emily Giffin. (Baby Proof, and Something Blue) They are excellent!

Oh, I TOTALLY agree with you on this one! I really liked THe Other Boylen Girl but this one was disgusting. I finally figured out that there wasn't one sympathetic character in the whole story. Yuck, did not even get half way.

I am trying to read The Constant Princess and it is ok but she goes back and forth between 3rd person and 1st person - letting us hear Catherine's thoughts, it is kind of disjointed.

I am actually looking for some new material too so I will be keeping an eye on this thread. :)

I actually just got back from London. I read the Constant Princess and The Boleyn Inheritance while I was there. Interesting to read while seeing the places being talked about. It really brought it to life!

Just finished Shotgun Rule by Charie Houston. Okay, quick read, no idea what I am going to pick up next.

I just finished DUMA KEY by Stephen King. It was great! I don't normally read his books but this one had gotten lots of good reviews so I gave it a shot. Let's just say its over 600 pages and I read it in 3 days:hyper: It pulls you in right away and keeps you entertained throughout!

I am currently reading the Alchemist. Just started it - it's a bit different but I think I am going to like it. It's supposed to be a classic? :confused3

Recent reads:

The Book Thief - about a German family who hides a Jew in the basement (among other plot lines). Very touching story.

The Road - post apocolyptic tale. This was riveting - but somewhat depressing!

Bel Canto and The Magician's Assistant - both by Ann Patchett. I love her writing. She makes the oddest situations so interesting.

Three Junes - I loved this book! It's about a Scottish family and how the death of the mother impacts their lives.

Time Traveler's Wife - I heard so much hype about this book that I think it was a bit of a letdown. Don't get me wrong, it's a good story, but not as great as I expected.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer-it's got a bit of everything. Takes a few chapters to get all the set up but then it's nonstop adventure/romance/make you think

I read The Alchemist and though I enjoyed it I don't understand the praise and hype. It was good but not earth shattering.

I'm reading Siddhartha right now, mainly because it was on the recommended reading table at Barnes and Noble. After I finish (probably tonight) I'm going to read 1776 because I need a refresher course in American history.

Last week I read The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. If you like fantasy this is an absolute must read. It's the best book I've read in years.

I'm reading the classics of Alcott and Austen this summer, they are so wonderful. I've watched the movies so many times I'd forgotten the grace and nuance of the books themselves. It's so relaxing to be transported to a simpler time.

There was just a segment on the weekend Today show where they went through a pile of books. The list is on their website. You might want to check tha out.
