Time for summer reads

I'm reading Siddhartha right now, mainly because it was on the recommended reading table at Barnes and Noble. After I finish (probably tonight) I'm going to read 1776 because I need a refresher course in American history.

If you want to continue your American history refresher, I recommend Battle Cry of Freedom, by James MacPherson (sp?). It covers the Civil War, but it is not a breezy, summer read.

Pink Slip- it's a VERY thinly veiled fictional account of what happened at Redbook whe Rosie took over. I ended up reading the entire book yesterday on my deck-it's a quick fluffy read (only problem is now I'm sunburned:rolleyes1 ). I'm also reading No Touch Monkey-a travelogue-very funny :)

I just got finished reading two fiction books that are based in the Disney parks.

One is "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom" - a sci-fi book about folks who want to give the animatronics in the Hall of President's real brains. Fun read.

The second one is called "The Kingdom Keepers" - it's labeled as teen fiction, but a great read. Certain "bad" characters are coming to life in the park and a group of kids are trying to save it from being overtaken! It's a quick and fun read.

Does anyone else know of any fiction books that are themed somehow to Disney?

For some great reading you have to read the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich. The 14th book just came out last Tuesday. Funny, funny books!!!

I just finished DUMA KEY by Stephen King. It was great! I don't normally read his books but this one had gotten lots of good reviews so I gave it a shot. Let's just say its over 600 pages and I read it in 3 days:hyper: It pulls you in right away and keeps you entertained throughout!

I have that one, haven't started it yet. I'm hoping it's good. I've loved some of his books, and some I just couldn't get into like "Lisey's Story". I got half way through it before I gave up. :(

Anything by Jodi Picoult - her books are fantastic!

I've read "Plain Truth", "Salem Falls", "The Pact", "My Sister's Keeper", "Vanishing Acts", "10th Circle", "Change of Heart", and right now I'm reading "Mercy". She has several others as well. Great reads.

Also, if you like medical thrillers, anything by Robin Cook or Tess Gerritson.

Hi Glynis

You know me, anything by Stephen King.

So many people are recommending Stephen King. I guess I may have to break down and give him a try. Any picks for a good starting place?

Right now I'm reading The Footprints of God by Greg Iles. It's a real page turner! I love his books.

I just finished I, Elizabeth by Rosalind Miles. It was a major disappointment. The prose was rather convoluted and you never really knew where you were in the timeline. It seemed like she'd age a decade overnight.

Another thing I just read which was a loooooong book, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke. It's written in early 19th century style and took me absolutely forever to get through, but I couldn't quit reading it! I swear, of all the books I've ever read, this one took me the longest. It's really an amazing book.

I am enjoying The Historian. I love these book threads - so many great suggestions.

I'm currently reading Change of Heart by Jodie Picoult. I love her books so I would highly recommend any of them.

Bag of Bones, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Gerald's Game, Rose Madder, Rose Red.

Here is a website that list his books. And if you click on the name of the book, it will give a small detail of what the story is about.

Give more of his books a read. All that I have read has done this, that is why I always recommend his work.

I have finished a few Dean Koontz books this summer that were good (Velocity was the best) and I am going to pick up "Whacked" by Jules Asner tomorrow.

Lisey's Story is next on my list! I hope I like it, I loved The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon! Think I read it in a day. :confused3

I could not get through Jonathan Strange! I hope to try again, based on your suggestion.:goodvibes

Have you read, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by the same author that wrote, "The Kite Runner?" It was a really good read.

I need to check out the others mentioned, I have not read a book other than a text book for about a year.

Start with a classic like 'Salems Lot. It's a vampire book that will give you the heebie jeebies for a while. I also enjoyed The Shining and It. Haven't gotten into his newer bookslately. I may give Duma Key a try from the library.
