Time for summer reads

I recently read When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris which is hilarious and was perfect for reading on an airplane (except for my giggling.) ;)

I also just finished Austenland by Shannon Hale. Very light but it was rather timely since I had just watched the BBC version of Pride & Prejudice and the heroine is obsessed with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. Austenland is fictional, very exclusive resort that recreates Jane Austen's time period so the resort guests dress and interact in that manner.

Have you read, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by the same author that wrote, "The Kite Runner?" It was a really good read.

I need to check out the others mentioned, I have not read a book other than a text book for about a year.

I've got this on my list! I loved "The Kite Runner", even though parts of it were hard, as a parent to read. I've heard good reviews on "A Thousand Splendid Suns."

I have that one, haven't started it yet. I'm hoping it's good. I've loved some of his books, and some I just couldn't get into like "Lisey's Story". I got half way through it before I gave up. :(

Lisey's Story is next on my list! I hope I like it, I loved The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon! Think I read it in a day. :confused3

I started this book last summer and I'm still reading it. Almost half way though. I do only read it at the pool though, i'm not THAT slow of a reader. lol

I second the recommendation for a Thousand Splendid Suns. I will say though, that I found it even tougher to read than the Kite Runner. It is extremely disturbing. I actually cried a couple of times while reading it, and I am not a crier.

I recently finished Unaccustomed Earth, by Jhumpa Lahiri. It was excellent. I actually think all of her books are excellent. Have you read the Interpreter of Maladies?

I'm nearly finished with The House at Riverton by Kate Morton. REALLY moving. I can't put it down. Not my typical fluff but I hope they make it into a movie -- it's beautiful!

I haven't read anything of hers! I'll check Interpreter of Maladies out. Sounds interesting!

I know this is a "children's book" but because they have made it into a movie (saw the clip at WALL-E) I'd like to reccommend a Newberry award book - -

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo

I think it may remind people of rattatouille, because it is about a mouse, but not really!! its a really good book! (DD now 12 says she's read it 3 times!! She loves how Despereaux refers to "dear reader" thru the book!)

I'm reading The Historian right now. It's ok, but I'm anxious to get through it because I have Gone With The Wind on deck and can't wait to dig into that.

Love summertime reading!

I agree! I loved it, and my 10 year old did too!

I just finished reading Divining Women. It was interesting and kind of sad. It was hard for me to read, as my sister went through a similar situation with her ex husband.

I read an article last week that over 40,000 books were published last year. I don't think I've read that many in all of my reading years. No wonder I always feel like there's so much I haven't read.

I will have to look at Divining Women.

That's why my husband hates to let me in a bookstore! I could easily spend thousands of dollars in one afternoon there. Thankfully, we have a good library system. Unfortunately, my bedside table is piled high (not to mention the floor by my bed!), so I need to read through some of what I've got!

Too many books, too little time. It almost makes me wish for an order of bedrest so I could get some reading done. Not gonna happen, though. I'm doing too well with this pregnancy!

which, of course, is an answer to prayer!! I am hoping to get about 4 books read while on vacation:rotfl:

That's my hope! We're camping from July 9-12, and I'm packing about 10 books. My plan is to get at least 4 of them read. More if I'm lucky! Since my kids are all big enough to take care of themselves at the beach (with minimal watching), I can set up under our awning in a beach chair, cold drink in hand, and read the day away. Is there anything better? Not to mention that on one of those days, DH is taking all 4 kids on a river float. That means at least 5 blessed hours of peace and quiet for mom. All I have to do is make sure there is a pot of franks and beans for the kids to devour when they get back!

Last week on vacation I read Bungalow 2, Danielle Steel; Drop Dead Beautiful, Jackie Collins and The Lost Constitution (can't recall the author).

I love love to read trash on vacation. :goodvibes The Lost Constitition is NOT trash, I picked that and read it last to ease me back to reality

Do you know the author for the Lost Constitution?

William Martin. Its on the best sellers paperbacks now. It a fascinating read -and very relevant, its about the right to bear arms and the Founding Fathers notes on the draft documents of the Constitution.

Just back from the bookstore. Here is the list of books I’ll be reading next.

Alice Adams: Collected Stories
Steven Hall: The Raw Shark Texts
Gil Adamson: The Outlander
Sara Roahen: Gumbo Tales: Finding my Place at the New Orleans Table
Stephan Talty: Empire of Blue Water
