Arts and Crafts **Tie Dye Mickey ears shirts directions**NEW NEW PICS LAST PAGE**

Hi PixieDust32:yay:,

Just came across this thread, LOVE IT!! I would like to make these shirts but I dont know what supplies to but. What is the wash stuff you soak them in? I dont even know what type of dye to buy, is it like rit? I would appreciate your help. I have never done any tye dye stuff.

Thanks!!

Hi,
No not rite, I know some people use it, but is not the same and you won't get the same results. You need fiber reactive dye, I use dharma or jacquard dye. The stuff to soak them is call SODA ASH aka sodium carbonate, same thing used in swimming pools to increase the PH. You can find it in craft stores in small quantity or in stores like home depot in bigger quantity.

You get such perfect coloring and spirals. I bow to your awesomeness.

Pixie! I'm beyond excited!!!! I just rinsed my shirts and threw them in the washer, and I'm very proud of myself! If it were not for all your help with all the questions and answers on this board, it would not have worked. After they are done, I will try to post pics if I can figure out how to do that!

Thanks for all you have done!!!

Awesome girl! I can't wait to see them. Thank you, so glad to hear that.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Pixie and everyone else who has contributed to this thread! We used the shirts to tell the kids we were going to Disney! My kids had been bugging me for so long to do tie dye and I had seen this method on the boards but didn't think we could manage it. Well, the advice here was so friendly and so detailed that I decided to try it. The trip was a surprise - the kids didn't know about it. Without telling them I traced and basted the mickey heads and twisted and rubber banded the shirts. It was at this point that I presented them with the shirts (all banded up) and told them we'd be doing tie dye that day. They were so excited to be tie dyeing. They couldn't tell that the little tuft of fabric sticking up was a Mickey head. They just thought it would be a big "splotch" in the front of the shirt in each of their favorite colors. We dyed the shirts, let them sit for 24 hours, and then we unwrapped them. The the kids looked at the shirts and were so confused that Mickey heads had appeared. Then they said they loved the shirts and it was too bad we didn't have a Disney trip planned. Then we told them we were going to Disney and they went nuts! They got a big kick out of the fact that I had gone to the trouble of surprising them. While we were in Disney we received so many compliments and so many people asking where we we bought them! And I loved it when they were wearing them in the parks because they were easy to pick out in a crowd. Maybe next time we'll make them for the adults too. Thanks again, especially to you Pixie for emailing me the outline and for answering so many questions from so many different people!!!

Ohhh  how cool for them, they look so cute wearing them. Thanks for letting me know, it makes my day :grouphug:
What a great idea to make the shirts without knowing, they will remember that forever. I missed those days when my kids were younger and we used to do things like that :guilty: Im so glad I was able to help you.
We were also so easy to spot at the parks :thumbsup2

I cant wait to try this! We are going in May, we always make disney shirts and we actually have enough to match every day..BUT...these are SOOO cute!! I hope ours turns out!!:woohoo:

Okay Pixie. On the black and red Minnie Mouse one, did you outline the head with fabric paint or a bleach pen? I tried to use the Clorox Bleach Pen and it didn't change the color at all. I'm not sure why it won't work. :(

bleach pen, it depends on the dye, some dye turns brown, some other don't, if it turns brown i use fabric pen.

That is so bizarre. Maybe my pen is too old or something. I swear, I put it on there and it didn't change even the slightest bit. Weird.
