Arts and Crafts **Tie Dye Mickey ears shirts directions**NEW NEW PICS LAST PAGE**

Well, I am going to try and make some. I have been putting it off, but with our trip in 2 weeks I guess I had better hit up Michael's tomorrow :)

Just did mine and DD's. Didn't do the basting thing, just used a paintbrush and made the head, then put elastics around everything:

Cool! The ears look nice and it looks like the paint brush trick worked. Nice job, thanks for sharing.

Roxy....loved your last picture....one question, please....are you using powder or liquid dye and which brand? The dark colors are vibrant!! Thank the Lord you don't mind sharing your ideas!! I can pretty much copy anything with good instructions. I just don't have much imagination though. Thanks, again, for your ideas and help.

Thank you. I use powder dye but I mix it with water and a product call "urea" also know as Liquid nitrogen. You can find it onlineor at some craft stores. Is not super expensive and you can buy from 1/2 pound up to 10.

The dyes i use are fabric reactive from dharma trading company online and also dyes from Jacquard, they are very good quality of dyes therefore the vivid colors.

You can google Jacquard products and find a local store art in your area or you can order online. And Dharma's web site is www.dharmatrading.com

Also the soda ash to prep the shirt, that one you can find it at your local craft store or home depot, wal mart in the pool area, is also called sodium carbonate. You can get it from dharma too but is heavy and the shipping is brutal.

Let me know if you have any other question, I'll be happy to help you.

What is the trick to keep the Mickey Head from seeping into the rest of the shirt? I bought a Clorox pen, do I just need to trace the Mickey head and them rubber band it all?

Hi,

Well on the camo shirt, the whole white part is where the rubber bands were, I didn't used any bleach on anything on it. Black dye is thicker that the blue or green, therefore it doesn't run wild to the rest of the shirt.

You need to trace the ears, then use silk thread or dental floss (I had never used floss but I know lots of people had and with good results) to do the baste, pull the string, tight it really good, then put the rubber bands, lots of rubber bands and really really tight, that would prevent the dye from seeping to the rest of the shirt.

I have one shirt right now ready to be dye, let me take a pic for you.

OK you guys, here a couple pics of one shirt, this one is a long sleeve shirt.

This is a great thread. I am planning a trip for May but will start some shirts over x-mas break since I'm sure it will take a few tries.

Ok, I'm about to take the plunge and make some University of Michigan (maize and blue) mickey tie dye shirts. I'm hoping this way DH will be willing to wear them! :) I'm concerned about keeping the colors separate...I don't want them to mix and make any green. How can I make sure they don't overlap at all?

Also, where can I find a good mickey head template?

Sorry if this info is elsewhere in the thread. I haven't read through it all yet

TIA,
erica

I do not have my template on my computer anymore :( but if you go to google and search for mickey head or ears template you will find a couple good ones.
Just save it as a picture and then print it.

About your overlap question, just make sure that the colors don't touch each other, you can leave a thin line of white between the colors because the will expand, pour the color about and inch apart from each other and if you see that is a big gap then you can fix it. You can try on a piece of cloth first to see how the colors expand.

Good Luck!

Hi guys! I made my hoddie, finally! :yay: Will show you a pic soon, hope ya like it.

OK girls, I'm so excited about my hoddie, it turned out way better than expected, it was a pain in the neck to whole process but it was worth it. So here it is and I hope you like it too.

I'll be happy to answer your questions.

I picked these colors because I really like them how they combo looks and you can wear it any time, any age etc...

Colors are:

Fuchsia
Lavender
Aquamarine
The ears on the back and hood are red, and on the front pockets are navy blue.

So what do you think? I'll have one of my girls model for me tomorrow.

I have been following this thread for a while now and had to comment on your hoddie....It looks Great!! I have done several shirts some for our DW trip this past June and also 24 of them with my cousin for a family gathering at DL in Sept. We all loved the shirts and got so many comments on them.

We have been contemplating how to do the hoodie and now you have inspired me to get started. When you do the Mickey heads on different areas of the hoodie? Do you stitch them all and rubber band them then swirl like normal or do you do the front then the back??

Thanks...I will post some pics of ours later:hippie:

Thank you.

Yes, yo do the sewing and the rubber bands and twist it like the shirt.

So you do it for each of the mickeys and then pull them up with the rubber bands then rubber band the sections and apply the dye...how do you keep the dye from touching the other parts??
:confused3

Yes, I do the mickey ears put the rubber bands, then pull them up and to keep the dye from touching I used plastic. It was tricky because I had 2 on the botton and 2 on the top.
