Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Has anyone here used this type of shirt yet? I found a moisture wicking shirt at WM that I wanted to use for mine. Any experience with this blend? THANKS!!!

The results won't be the same since the dye is fiber reactive dye, it will only dye the natural fibers.

I made these shirts for our trip in 2006, I believe. I swore I'd never do them again (I hate the sewing part!), but I'm starting to get the urge to make more! (the last few trips I just did regular old tie-dyes, with no mickeys) What's the fabric resist for? I was pretty happy with how mine came out last time, but but I always like a good tip to make things easier! Where does everyone buy their dyes? They used to sell the powdered dyes at AC Moore, but I can't find them any more. Is there a good online source for the Dharma dyes?

This is the website for Dharma. http://www.dharmatrading.com/ Just go to the link at the top of the page for dyes, then go to tie-dye. The hard part is choosing colors! I haven't actually bought any, yet, because I keep changing my mind which colors to get!!

How long will the dye stay good? I made some a couple of weeks ago. We wanted to make another set of just red and black. I had some red. Will I need to buy more? I probably won't do them until next weekend. If it matters I had tulip dye. thanks.

I just made our tie-dyed shirts last night and in our instruction kit it says to use the remaining dye within 2 weeks.

I did ours with a Tulip tie-dye kit & the instructions said to use within 45 minutes after mixing! :scared1: Something about the dye getting weaker. I don't think this would affect if you can use it or not, just how strong the color it?

Here a couple of pics for more inspiration...

For the green/blue one, what were the Dharma colors you used? I did shirts for our 1st trip last year and used the Tulip kits and while they turned out cute, I am ready to place an order with Dharma but DH wants one that looks like the one you just did above.

One other question, what is the Urea (I think I have that right) and how do you use it?

I used turquoise, bright green and navy blue.
Urea is "organic oxygen", you mix it with the water you are going to use to mix with the dye.

Thank you so much! :worship: You are awesome!!!

Oh another dye color question. Is there a purple that you have used and really liked? Do you have any samples you can show me with purples. My mom's favorite color is purple and I thought about doing just purple and white but I want to see what the shades look like before I buy...there are too many to choose from!!!

For those of you who are looking at Dharma colors. These shirts were made with Bright Green, Turquoise, Lemon Yellow and Royal Blue. And for those who were wondering about what will happen if you don't use a 100% cotton shirt? See the two shirts in the middle row, far right. I don't know what the cotton/poly blend was but these shirts were clearly not 100% cotton. The fabric does not hold the dye as well.

Hi whama, I thought that was a 50/50 you can tell right away, the dye only reacts on natural fibers, so for the newbies don't waste your money on those shirts.I noticed that wal mart has 50/50 shirts now in the craft section, they're cheap but not good for tie dye.

Think PINK Black and Pink Pink and Black

I'm going to try and make these, but have a couple of questions (please forgive me if they have been asked already).

I cannot find any kits that have soda ash in them. Do you have to have the soda ash? If so, where can I find it? The ones I have seen say no soaking required.

Also, do the shirts need to be wet when you add the dye? I think I read somewhere after you soak them in soda ash, then you dye them but what if you don't use the soda ash? :confused3

Hi ♥

The kits that have no soda ash is because the soda ash is in the dye, so you would not need to soak them in the soda ash. Some say to do it dry, you can do it but its harder for the fabric to absorb the dye and the pattern would not look the same. So what you can do is wet the shirts in regular water, wring the excess, tie them and then add the dye.
:thumbsup2

Sorry for all the questions...

What exactly do you mean by squeeze between the fold? Do you mean putting more colors where the shirt is tied up? :confused3

Hi there,
Yes the bun is the spiral :thumbsup2 the tube is the bulls eye and it doesn't look as pretty like the spiral, well I like the spiral better.

You need to squeeze between the fold really good to get more color and less white, haha i know the hardest part is the waiting :rolleyes1:yay: the twist is the spiral.

Well I use black like any other color, making sure that it doesn't go to the other color, but its cool, black is not so 'bad' depending on the brand is the shade, if you are using the tulip those are great but use less water for a darker shade, dharma's I use new black. :thumbsup2 Don't worry, you can ask me all you need to know. :thumbsup2

Yes, when the shirt is in a 'bun', tied, you need to gently put the tip of the bottle in the folds, yes where the shirt is tied. :thumbsup2

Wow we got TONS of comments/compliments and even offers for our shirts! Thanks Pixie and all for the inspiration. And to those of you that think yours did not "turn out" Tie Dye is forgiving! Mine certainly did not turn out like I intended, but I grew to love them lol
