Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Has any one done this with just one color or one color scheme? DH doesn't care for Tie dye too much so I thought if I did Boys shirts in just an aqua blue with a medium amount of white showing, or two shades of blue or something, and girls shirts in pink or pink and red or purple.

What does everyone else think???

Funny you should ask, I just did this very thing! I'm hoping to post my final results tomorrow, so it'll give you an idea of what it can look like. I love doing one color scheme, or sticking with one to two colors, it gives a really nice unity to the shirts. :thumbsup2

Now I see 'em! :goodvibes Sweet, they look cool. :yay:

Thanks!

Here is the adult halloween shirt, loved they way it tourned out.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!! Fantastic! :thumbsup2

I know, me too, i was thinking the same, mmmm candy corn, candy corn, pumpkin pie mmmm

Me, too, it reminds me of candy corn. I love that it's getting to be that time of year. :thumbsup2

HELP ME, PLEASE!!!

After seeing the wonderful Halloween-themed tees, I just love them. I now find myself unsure of how to do my shirts!! I was wanting to come up with some nautical-themed tees for our cruise next month, and now I don't know what to do!

Unfortunately, all the short sleeved all cotton tees are gone from the store shelves, so I cannot get another set of tees. If I could get a different set, then I wouldn't be worrying about this at all.

I guess that I could ask the family what they would like me to do (and DH would say that we already have two sets - why would we need another???), but any suggestions as to how I should make up my mind?

You can always get short-sleeved white cotton shirts from Michaels, Wal-Mart or Target -- you can buy the Hanes Beefy Tees in multi-packs year round at superstores and other cotton tees in the tye dye aisle at craft stores.

You can order the shirts online!

I'd never done the crumpled effect but i'll try.

OK, I tie-dyed for the first time with the kids yesterday. I'll rinse this afternoon.....but I have a question....... Do I rinse them bundled or un-band them and then rinse?? When do I un-pucker Mickey?

I'm having my doubts that Mickey will be sharp, though. The mickey head color seemed to be wicking slightly down under the rubberbands on one of them....:sad2: I had an inch of tight rubberbands.......oh well, there's always the bleach pen to perk them up , right??!!!:thumbsup2

Thanks for your help, gals! This thread has been invaluable!

While mine were still banded I rinsed them until there wasn't any more color coming from them. Then I unbanded them and rinsed some more. When I took my bands off the Mickey is when I pulled the thread. Then I rinsed in the washer a few times.

In the past if I rinsed after taking out the bands color would bleed into the white parts so I rinsed before taking them out and it worked great.

I did my first tie dye today with the kids. I don't know how well they will turn out though. I think I used too much dye because spots on the table would get into the next section (I didn't know the spots were there until after they did the damage :( ) Oh well, we won't know until we unband tomorrow. I also have a blue thumb :)

For those who do this more than once - do you keep your dye and for how long?

Tomorrow can't come soon enough!

:rolleyes1:rolleyes1:rolleyes1

I do the same. Rinse them with the bands until water runs clear, remove bads, hand wash them and then put them in the washer machine for a rinse with the dharma detergent.

About 24 hours

Sorry if this has been asked before, but there are 111 pages to this thread and I didn't have time to look through them all. :rotfl2: Do the shirts have to be soaked in soda ash before tye dyeing? The kit I bought (Tulip from Hobby Lobby) doesn't have it as part of the kit. Just wondering if I should go out and look for it or if I can make the shirts without soaking in the soda ash. Thanks!

You don't HAVE to use Soda Ash but it will help your shirts be brighter and more vibrant. Tulip makes/sells soda ash too - it should be right where you bought your dyes at Hobby Lobby - I don't have HL here in the NW but I use the Tulip dyes and get the Soda Ash at JoAnns or Michaels right there with the dyes. It's in a pink and white box just like the single color dyes.
Hope that helps! :)

Indeed, tulip dyes you don't have to use the soda ash, it has it in the dye, but it doesn't hurt to do that step. Your colors would look brighter.

Pixie, I've been meaning to ask you, how do you get so little white in your shirts? Is it by saturating them, do you really need to stick the applicator into the folds of the shirt? I'm just wondering, no matter how dripping mine seem to be, there's always quite a bit of white.

Here's my latest ones, you can see what I mean. :goodvibes

The first two sets aren't so bad, but the larger shirt for my husband on the bottom has quite a bit of white. I'm not displeased with it, but I'd love to know how to make it more colorful.

We rinsed and unbanded ours yesterday at 24hrs. Love the colors, but didn't anticipate so much white showing, either. Ours were dripping with dye, too!:confused3 Our mickey heads turned out pretty well, though, considering it was my first time dyeing! I'll post pics after church....
