Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Okay, here's the shirts I did from our second session. (My sisters turned out even better than mine, the weenie. LOL)

This is for my dad, using the tub dunk method & bleaching on the Mickey head after dyeing, before washing.

My shirt! No Mickey, this was just an extra I experimented on. Used an accordian fold, then the squirt bottle method. (Like making the paper fans back in school)

Awesome! I love the way it looks, never tried one like that. Thank you!

Here's the shirts I made...(hoping this works!!)

First four shirts all for my DS, age 13

Shirt 1 - first ever attempt - I think it's a great spiral but too much white. (Didn't want to try a mickey head on the first attempt)

Shirt 2 - This was an accordian fold pattern suggested by my SIL

Shirt 3 - This was a rolled up longwise like a rope and banded.

Shirt 4 - A combo of the mickey head and my cousins rope method.

Shirt 5 - funnily enough, this one is my shirt and it's my FAVORITE of the batch. :-)

Shirt 6 - my hubby's. He isn't thrilled about it, but agreed to wear it. We ran out of time to sew, so I bleach-outlined his on after they had sat the 24 hours.

I wish my colors had stayed more vibrant. I did do a soda ash soak. Used Dyson dyes. I wonder if more time in the plastic wrap would have helped? Or do the cheaper dyes just not stay as vibrant as the Dharma?

Thanks again!

p.s. Yay, got the pics to work! Thanks Tinker...I was pasting in the wrong code!

Maybe because you used the dyson, I'd never used those :confused3 so I don't know if they work like the others for tye dye, the fiber reactive.

Hi, just wanted to share the Hobby Lobby coupon with ya'll, I know some Michael's and Joann's take HL coupon.

Ok....Here we go...My first attempt....:upsidedow

Tonight I basted the Mickey heads.....
Now they're soaking in soda ash overnight....
Tomorrow, I dye!:rotfl2:

There are so many posts in this thread, and I've really tried to go through and look for the tips. I just wanted to ask if the instructions at the very beginning are what I should be doing exactly. The shirts ya'll have been posting are absolutely gorgeous!

Ok... so I'm trying this today. If I want really vibrant colors, should I double up on Jacquard dyes? (idye, specifically)

I'd used jacquard before and it will look vibrant, you don't have to double them up. Just follow their instructions. The kit has the ash also.

You'll love the results :yay: good luck. :cheer2:

o.k. so I did my first shirt yesterday. It turned out pretty good. I may have not let it soak long enough, I got antsy and wanted to see it. The mickey head turned out great!! I used the Jaquard pink, yellow, blue kit.

Today my kids dyed theirs and wanted more colors, I picked up a few that were Tulip individual packets and Rit packs of the other colors I didn't have (a crayon green type) . When we squirted them on , Man they looked UGLY! As they are sitting in saran wrap they look better, but we may have to start over on them. I will try to learn how to add pics and post them.

This is fun. We have another batch in the soda ash and we are going to them tomorrow after we rinse and wash the ones we dyed today. That way we can change up anything we need to.

Sounds good! I know, is hard to wait, but is very important to let them sit long enough.
You can make many colors with the jacquart, you can make, green, navy blue, orange, purple, lime green.
The RIT i had never used because they aren't fabric reactive, but wait to see how they turned.

Cool! :yay: :woohoo:

The one I pulled out early was an old shirt of mine that I was experimenting with to see if it looked right at all. The colors are pretty bright even though it wasn't a full 24 hours. It was from about 1pm yesterday to 8-9 am today that it sat in saran wrap. Honestly I thought that all of the colors would blend into a murky brown with it all wrapped up. It turned out really colorful. My kids thought it needed more green and orange than mine made when i used the basic three kit. The store I went to this morning only had tulip and rit, the store with Jaquard is about 30 minutes away, so I went to the close store. The green looked black when we put it on, it is turning more green as the day goes on.

Has anyone made a shirt with the camo colors? My youngest DS would love that.

Oh I see! 8-9 hours is not so bad. Tulip is ok, the rit i don't know, never used it. But tulip I had and they work fine.
I seen the camo kits but never tried. Some colors look darker when liquid but they'll change on the fabric. I wrap mine on the Saran wrap too and then I put them in a plastic bag, to keep them moist.

Can't wait to see.

Sweet! I did it today, I made like 13 shirts between my mom, my DD, and me. I hope I didn't over/under saturate them. I guess we'll see tomorrow! Can't wait to open them up, it'll be like Christmas! :rotfl:

Hello Tie Dye Pals! I made some more shirts this weekend - since my August trip had to be rescheduled until December I made some christmas shirts!
