Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

We rinsed and unbanded ours yesterday at 24hrs. Love the colors, but didn't anticipate so much white showing, either. Ours were dripping with dye, too!:confused3 Our mickey heads turned out pretty well, though, considering it was my first time dyeing! I'll post pics after church....

Can't wait to see them!

Did you make that cake in your avatar?

Hi girls!

Well i don't do anything special, just pour dye, if you squirt to much between the folds then you get too much dye and it doesn't look as pretty, I like some white but not a lot.

You make your different tk, since you don't sew your mickey, that's cool too. ;)

Cool! :cool1: can't wait to see. BTW your cake looks amazing.

Just in case anyone wanted to try the spray can type dye..which is supposed to be less hastle...Don't bother! You end up with mostly white because the dye doesn't bleed over in to the folds at all. I even pulled some of the folds apart and sprayed. Didn't help plus the shirt has more of a slick paint feel (like a pen writer) instead of just feeling the cotton of the shirt. We leave a week from today so not sure I'll have a chance to try it again. Just trying to help save anyone else from this blunder!!!:sad1:

Ok, here are my first tie-dyes. I like DD9's mickey head best (lower right). Too much white overall, though. I also did not get a very good spiral effect, even though they were twisted like a cinny bun. Oh well, live and learn, eh? The kids were THRILLED!

OT: I forget who asked, but yes, I did make the cake in my avatar. I play around with custom cakes of all kinds! :)

Thanks for the tip. I had never tried the spray thing anyway, but is good to know. ;)

You did great, I love having some white because you can see the patterns and the colors mix up.
;)

Well, I guess I'll just have to make more shirts to experiment! ;)

I actually prefer the control I get with not sewing the Mickey heads. I really like painting them on with bleach after. :goodvibes

I think they came out great! And the first shirt we did for my husband has a lot of white showing, similar to yours, but I like how it looks. Like Pixie said, you can really see how the colors blend.

I was the one who asked about the cake. :goodvibes It looks great! I'm very interested in learning how to make fondant and do different things, so I always notice that kind of stuff.

I see, well I guess we go for whatever works better for us and we feel comfortable. I love sewing the mickey, the rubber bands and all that, it is more work but i love the results and I got used to it.
See ya TK

Everyone's shirts have been looking so good. I have been told I have to lay off the dyeing. Something about addiction. :confused3

I hope I'm not offending you. :goodvibes I really love the way yours and Tinker's shirts come out, but I've never had good luck with sewing the Mickey heads. I really admire how well you guys do it though! :thumbsup2

Um - I don't understand. What exactly is an addiction??? :rolleyes1

Hey TK, have you ever used the Dharma Detergent, not the Synthrapol, their own formula, I think is the same thing is just their own formula. Just wondering, i used Synthrapol and works perfect.

Ok... I need some major help here. I dyed about 10 shirts (hey, I had a a 5-pack for me, 5pack for DD) and the mickey heads turned out distinct, but my colors keep fading badly, and the (excessive) white in the shirts is now even more of a muddle pinky purple. I don't think they're "in public" wearable anymore, I'm really bummed.

I soaked them in soda ash, used jacquard dyes (1 packet/5oz water), rinsed them until clear, untied them, washed them (where a lot of the muddiness occurred) and dried them. I've worn them once and so had DD (OK not *all* of them) and washed them again tonight with my regular detergent, and they're just super muddy.

I want to try this again. The mickeys and other shapes turned out really cool, but ugh they just look like poo now. Are the Dharma dyes that much better? Is there a remarkable difference? Does the urea really help that much more? Am I missing a step?

I know I didn't saturate them enough, there was a lot of white. I won't rubber band them as tight this time either... lol. :headache:

Help! Help! :D I beg of you, goddesses of tie-dyeing!!

Oh bummer mrs. charming. It sounds like you did everything correct. I had used jaquard before and loved the results.

OK, lets see.... I think is one gallon of water per pack of the soda ash in the kit.
You soak them for whatever time the directions tells you. At least 30 min.
You don't rinse them at this time, wring them really good then to the dye. they should sit for about 24 hours, then rinse them, wash them and dry.

I use urea and it does work really good, also de dharma detergent.

Maybe you did too many, try making just a couple, in my case or they way i do it is time consuming, since it was the first time for you maybe if you make just a couple you get better results.

Good luck. :)

You don't HAVE to use Soda Ash but it will help your shirts be brighter and more vibrant. Tulip makes/sells soda ash too - it should be right where you bought your dyes at Hobby Lobby - I don't have HL here in the NW but I use the Tulip dyes and get the Soda Ash at JoAnns or Michaels right there with the dyes. It's in a pink and white box just like the single color dyes.
Hope that helps! :)

Indeed, tulip dyes you don't have to use the soda ash, it has it in the dye, but it doesn't hurt to do that step. Your colors would look brighter.

Thanks for the info! I'm trying the shirts tonight but not holding out much hope as my "puckered mickey" looks nothing like the picture. :lmao:
