Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

These are my trial run shirts.....I am impressed with how they turned out but I think they have way to much white.....how do I fix this???

Here are the steps I did
1. Pre-washed shirts
2. Sewed the Mickey head in dental floss and pulled tight
3. Soaked in soda ash for 30 minutes
4. Twisted into pie and rubberbanded
5. Use Tulip brand dyes to dye the shirts
6. Let sit for 24 hours
7. Rinsed and washed

Any suggestions???

Just made a batch of shirts in red and yellow with black mickey heads, I think I remeber somewhere in this thread that the bleach pen won't work well on the black,,,,does anyone have experiene using the bleach pen on Tulip brand black dye?

TIA!

Great trial run! To get rid of the white you have to use ALOT of dye. I dont have experience with the tulip brand, I use Procion dyes from dharma trading and use a ton of dye. I dont like white on my shirts at all.

for those that use the dental floss....why can't it be mint?
all i can find is mint! and what we have at home is mint...but its not colored floss...is that ok?
i can't believe i can't find original or non mint! (well, i did see one at target, but for over $6 which is silly since we have dental floss at home, and i only need it for this shirt....)

thanks

I'd never used floss.

OK, here is my latest crazy project. I silk screen printed the jack o lantern inside the mickey ears....

I have used mint floss several times with out a problem. That is all I could find.

These are our Mickey shirts I did this weekend. I may outline them with the bleach pen, but haven't really decided yet...

The dye was from Dharma and everyone loved the colors I chose. Our first set I used the Jacquard kits, and they were fine also, but the red was more like hot pink.

Everyone's shirts came out fantastic, and we had different variations of patterns. Only 3 of us did Mickey's, and with Pixie's instructions, they were actually a breeze! The hardest part was waiting the 24 hours for them to cure.

If you've never done tye dye, don't be afraid of trying it! Like Pixiedust says, just make sure you get the dye down into the folds if you don't want a lot of white. I'm sure we'll be making more in the near future.

Thank you all for posting your photos, helping with the instructions, and asking questions whether or not you think they were 'dumb'. Believe me, there is no dumb question and I'm sure there is always someone who is thinking the same thing you are!!

I'll post our 'regular' tye dyed shirts we did in another post.

Here are the other shirts we've done. The first 4 are from the Jacquard kit with the brighter colors.

Also, I wanted to say that when I did the Mickey's, I used Glide dental floss and had no problems with it what so ever. It was actually easy to pull out when I came to that part of the rinsing. I also made sure that once I basted the head I poked my finger from the other side to make sure that all of Mickey's head was above the basting line.

Enjoy and happy tye dying!

Very nice!! Love all the different variations and the colors. Thanks for posting and the tips.

So if I wanted to just do 2 colors should I alternate red and green around the shirt?? I saw that you add dye in 1/4 like a pizza. MAYBE??????

Yes, you go red then green then red.... Depending on the size of your shirts is the slices, the bigger the shirt the more slices or bigger slices, the smaller you can do the same amount of slices so your shirts would look more uniform only smaller.

Let me show you... I made this shirts on those colors, red and green...

This shirt is a 3XL tall, so is bigger and longer, the mickey might look smaller due to the size also...

As you can see the pattern is the same but the lines are smaller, they look identical even if the size is not near the same....

Here is an adult long sleeve size Medium... Same thing you re size your slices to get an even look... Make senses?
