Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I love your latest shirts Pixie...actually I love all your shirts. I made a batch for our last trip using Jacquard die (got lots of compliments while we were at the World;). When I got home I did a few more for nieces and nephews and used tulip (not thrilled). And after seeing the vibrancy in your shirts, I just placed a big dye order from Dharma. I can't wait to get them and do some more! Another craft to keep me busy

PixieDust32, amazing work! I am actually reading this entire thread before I start and I just reached your first shirt attempt (that one was great too)

I do have a couple of questions, how do you get such a thin defined line of white on the Mickeyhead (like on the blue & green ones), is that the silk thread you use or is it bleach pen?

Also when doing a multiple MH shirt like the pink and brown one above, how do you know the brown MH is in the pink and vice versa. I'm guessing the answer is that once you pull the MH out you know where it is so you just dye that "slice" of the pie the other color, but I want to make sure before I try, as I am trying multi-MH sundresses (way to start right out of the gate, huh?!?!?) LOL

Thanks so much for your help and dedication on this thread to all of us n00b tie dyers! :flower3:

Thank you Ann! Yes, Dharma is like Disney World :woohoo: once you try it, you don't want to go back to any other brand. Their dyes are awesome, beautiful shades and so bright and pretty.

The Jacquard is good too but dharma is the best.

Have fun!! Im sure the kids would love them :yay:

I am a bit bummed as our shirts didn't turn out that great. My ears aren't well defined and we have lots of white on the entire shirt. Not sure if I can "fix" it with a bleach pen or if I should just try again. We are leaving on Saturday (yes this Saturday) so I am in a bit of a time crunch. Saw the jacquard dye today at AC Moore and it seems to be calling my name. We used a Tulip kit to do the not so great shirts.

Also Pixie how big are your basting stitches around the mickey head?? Are the white "stitching" marks around your Mickey heads the basting stitches??

Thanks so much

Terri

Thank you! :goodvibes

I normally just rubber bands do the trick, but some dye like the lime green and blue always bleed so I just trace or re touch the line already there with a bleach pen, takes a lot of practice and mistakes  to get it right, you can practice on a rag or cloth before doing it on your Mickey shirt.

As for the one with 2 mickeys, you will see the sizes, one is bigger than the other, so if you going to dye your little mickey brown, that slice needs to be pink that way it will stand out and so on....Same thing with multiple, you dye your mickey lets say red, add yellow on that slice, next mickey blue add red on that slice and son on...

Oh no! :( but you have time....
The Jacquard kit is great, those dyes are WAYYYY better than tulip.... Just make sure you stick the bottle tip in the folds...

OK, on this pic.....

Look at the Pink Mickey, those little lines on the ears, those are my stitches, they are pretty small, I don't exactly the size, but the smaller the better.

Im not sure if I read this here...
Can I reuse the soda ash after soaking my shirts? Also, how many shirts can I realistically soak together?

How damp/wet should the shirt be when dying?
Thanks for the help!

Yes, you can re use it as many times as you want until is gone, or until you don't have enough to soak more shirts.

Well if you make one gallon about 4 shirts depending on the size.

Damp, it should have enough water to cure.

Thank you!! I am going to attempt two shirts and two pillowcases this weekend.:thumbsup2

I did a test 50/50 shirt and some strong silk thread yesterday. I think I need to use dental floss and make my basting stitches closer together. And, I will need a bleach pen. Regardless, you can see the main idea of it, and I love the colors, even on the 50/50.

Okay I have my 2nd attempt at these shirts wrapped in plastic wrap and waiting on the counter until their unveiling tomorrow night. I am praying these are better than my first set or I will be super bummed. I used Jacquard dye this time and really tried to get down in all the folds. I will let you know how it turns out.

You guys will appreciate this one...we went to Disneyland this past weekend and wore our Mickey tye dyes on Sunday. People kept coming up to us and asking us 'what store' we bought them in...we were good and told them we made them instead of sending them either to the other side of the park or over to California Adventure...lol...

But! In my adventures in scouring the shops and stores, we came upon a tye dye shirt in Adventureland with a transfer on the front for $40.95!!!:scared1::sad2:

O.M.G....as soon as I pull my pictures off the camera I'll post for everyone to see...believe me, our lil homemade shirts were far better than the one they were selling in the shop. So for those of you who don't think your home made shirts are not good enough, please wear them to the park and be proud with what you've made!! The beauty of tye dye is that every shirt is different, and no two come out the same. No one knows they aren't 'up to par' but you, so wear them and be proud!!

Good grief! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: what a rip off!

I agree with you, tie dye is an art and they wouldn't never be identical, the beauty of the colors, the patterns etc.. All ya'lls work that I had seen are beautiful and you should be very proud of yourselves. :hippie: Now as for that price  I think is insane.

Here more ideas for ya!

Pixie your shirts are just awesome. How do you get such a tight spiral? I would love to see a picture of one of your shirts wrapped, and in the process of being dyed.
