Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I mixed the colors for our shirts. I used Dharma dyes - Turquiose, Lemon Yellow, and Fushia Red. The only problem I had was that when i mixed the purple, when I rinsed the shirts the blue bled out of the purple. It didnt ruin the shirts, I still like the way they all turned out.

These shirts were: Lemon yellow, Turquoise, Green (yellow & turquise mixed), and Purple (fushia & turquoise mixed) The blue ring around the Mickey head is from the blue dye bleeding out of the purple, I didnt put blue there.

These pillow cases (not 100% cotton btw, which is why the colors arent as vibrant) were Fushia Red & Purple (mixed as above). All of the blue on these was caused by bleeding:

Thank you so much for posting pictures of your wonderful creations. I am a very visual person to it helps a lot.
Is it possible to post a picture of your shirts in the process of being made? Meaning once the shirt is spiraled and banded...in what sections do you squirt each color to get the magnificant spiral? Do you alternate color or do you color one side (no matter how many sections) on color and then the other color on the opposite? Sorry if this is confusing, like I said I'm a visual person:lmao:

Thanks! I already have a red and blue leftover from a girl scout activity, so I wasn't sure about mixing. This helps a lot! We're leaning toward "Halloween" colors, since we'll be on the Halloween cruise.

Amazing job!! Thanks for sharing ♥♥♥♥ it does that when you mix the dyes, the lighter color always bleeds and "shows". :confused3

Pixie, could you tell me the exact name of the colors you used on the halloween shirts? Of course, I know orange and purple(lol), but is the other color Black or dark blue? Also, on the dharma website there are so many shades of black. Do you mind telling me which one you use? Thx:)

Sure!

I use New Black.

I'm sure this has been asked - but can I mix colors, i.e., yellow and red make orange?

Yes! I like to play with mixing colors, sometimes I get great results, others not so much :rotfl: but that's how we learn :lovestruc You can get a color wheel to help you.

Pillowcase...to get a great look, make sure they are 100% cotton and the higher thread count the better. These are 400 count.
Great for character's autographs!

Thank you that helped.

Just had to say THANKS for the great directions! We did our first attempt, learned a lot and had a GREAT time making these! Our Mickey's didn't quite get defined the way we wanted them to - and the bleach pens didn't quite take away as much of the dye as we wanted - BUT we love them anyway! We got SOOOOOO many comments and questions about our shirts as we wandered around DL. People kept wanting to know if we bought them or made them - then they wanted to know HOW to make them! We're already planning our next attempt :woohoo: THANK YOU!!

This was my first attempt last month (i'm on the right) and I like it but there is no real spiral. There I put a different color in each slice. The shirts I'm doing next week are two color. Do you suggest alternating the color per slice or say two slices red then two black etc. What gives the best spiral?

That's how you get the spiral, you twist the shirt from the center, then you alternate the colors, you make slices, one color, lets say, red, then blue, then yellow and so on, then on the bottom you do the same, red on the red slice and so on, you should get the spiral. Same if you have 2 colors, you alternate...

Perfect!!!!!! Thank you so much:thumbsup2:worship:

After reading this thread, I tok a field trip to Dick Blicks. I decided to trade in my Tulip kit for Dylon dye, but can't find any information on the tye dye measurements. Any measurements I found were in the metric system. LOL

Does anyone know how much of a Dylon packet goes into a squirt bottle and how much water I should add to it?

How about the Jaquard brand? These came in little 2 ox jars, I think and the lady had no information on those either.

Thanks,

Pamela

The dylon dye IS NOT FIBER REACTIVE, I don't know how to use that kind of dye because its not the right one for this instructions. I guess you can dye stuff but the results won't be the same ;)

The Jacquard, well that brand has a lot of different kinds of dyes, you need the fiber reactive portion dye for TIE DYE, and it has the instructions on the jars.

So, I looked at Wal-Mart and this is what I found...Aqua Chem Shock Plus. Active ingredient is listed as Sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione. This isn't the right stuff is it?? The only thing I found with Sodium Bicarbonate was Pure Baking Soda and I think I read on here that you don't want to use that?? Help!!!

No, not the right stuff

Is call SODIUM CARBONATE or PH Increaser and you can find it where all the pool toys and chemicals are in wal mart or home depot, go outside where the plants are and they have it there too, or ask someone in home depot for SODIUM CARBONATE.

Baking soda is totally different! No, you don't want to use it because its worthless for this process.
