Tickets and Fast Passes

i am going to WDW in September. My DS and family are trying to join us for a long weekend. I've already booked a room only reservation and since it's just over a month before I choose fps, I'll go in and add a couple of hoppers. If I buy the tickets and my magic 60 days appears, what happens if for some reason he can't go? Adding fps does not activate the tickets and I can go on, cancel the fps and save the tickets for 2017? I just don't want to mess up 1000.00 worth of tickets. Thanks!

I believe tickets are only activated at the park turnstile, not by booking FP+.
