The Walt Disney Co. has pulled from its shelves beaded tiaras and wands made by a company that allegedly paid women to make them for less than minimum wage.

Disney's action Thursday came after The Orange County Register reported the workers were paid 60 cents a tiara but couldn't make the 10 an hour needed to meet the minimum wage. The tiaras sold for $9.99 each, the newspaper reported.

Women who worked for KTBA told state labor inspectors they would have to keep up an impossible pace to make minimum wage. They added that rushing the job created hazardous working conditions because they could burn themselves with hot glue or poke themselves with wire.

Disney auditors met Thursday with officials from the contractor to discuss the allegations and review its contracts, Disney spokesman Ken Green said.

"We've canceled all pending orders and placed a hold on all merchandise made that was scheduled for shipment," Green said.

sigh. It's so sad that companies are so profit hungry that they forget about the little people. The same little people, incidentally, that they rely on.

That poor woman. I hope this comes back on Disney, HARD!

...that this kind of thing happens, but hanging it on Disney seems a stretch.

It sounds like Disney made a deal with a contractor who was abusive, and, once they found out about the abuses, cancelled the deal.

I'm one of the first to point out where Disney is screwing up, but this should come down on the contractor, not Disney.

Ditto to JeffJ.

When presented with accurate information, it sounds like Disney took the appropriate action .

Thanks, JeffJ for pointing that out. Disney is the hero here, not the villain. If more (all) organizations would take this position, then there would be no abuse.
