Three Things...Gratitude Thread

Totally agree with sme of the answers.

I love my Spode Christmas Tree china and glassware. I start using it at least by Thanksgiving (and have bought the melamine versions for my grandbabies).

leebee, I'm with you - fancy cocktails. When I go out I always look for something unique. (Mmm - Grand Candied Orange Coffee...). And I love a nice flight also - be it beer, Scotch, Sangria, Margaritas, whatever.

Pedicures lol. I feel so spoiled - but the sad fact is I can no longer reach my right foot because of a bad hip which limits movement.

Catching up on a few things....

Hand me down items -
The Bible from my great/grand aunt. Such a treasure that I was able to keep after she passed. She was a very spiritual woman.
The furniture my Dad made some 45 yrs ago - the hutch in our dining room to the bookshelves and desk in my DS19 room. Rock solid!

Overlooked items -
Flipping on the light switches in our house and knowing there will be light. Tell me I am wrong, how many times have y'all flipped on a light switch knowing the power is out. Me :-)
Hitting the ignition in our cars and knowing it is going to start

Fancy things -
Using our wedding china when we host Thanksgiving with the family.
My Lexus ES350. I even have teenagers say what a cool car :D

Fancy things...I am so not fancy.
1. I splurged on a Coach purse for my 50th birthday. I love it!

2. My master bathroom LOL. We just renovated it and it's the nicest room in the house.

3. The style of my house. It's an English Tudor style and has some arched doorways and fancy glass.

1) I'm grateful my schools always had libraries! (I learned in the encyclopedia thread that more than I would have thought did not.)

2) My math teachers - I had really excellent math teachers who were excited about their subject and really encouraged us to "stand on their shoulders" and learn more.

3) I'm grateful for book recommendations I've gotten over the internet (here on the DIS, Instagram, notes from articles I've read, etc.)

Bonus - I'm grateful for Legos. 🧱 I firmly believe playing with Legos as a kid helped me understand fractions when I got to school!

Happy Thursday Morning

#1 - Museums - I’m a museum junky, and I always have been. I’m taking my parents to the museum my DH works at in Chicago today.

#2 - My DD’s Local Schools - Both my girls had a very good experience in their schools. The teachers were great, their activities were great - they loved every minute. They each had some stressful moments, but the positive moments far outweigh the negative moments.

#3 - My DD21’s College - She wanted to go small and what a great decision that was. Because of this, she’s gotten to know her professors and advisors very well, and because of that, they know her ambitions and work ethic and have worked with her to help her get her bachelor’s degree in 3 years. So, instead of being a junior this year, she’s a senior. Her advisor is also very helpful with helping her get into grad school (DD is in the process of applying). I don’t think she’d ever get this from a big huge college.

Happy Thursday everyone from me, too :)

Grandpa Sam was my first witness to Christ in the quietly kind way he lived. Grandma Dolores sure exemplified feisty loyalty. Both of them sure loved dad, Champ, and me. Dad is sure loyal and tenacious, too. I admire him so much. How blessed I am by God for them all.

Libraries and Bookstores have always been special places including of refuge at times.

A fun one to bring each of you an extra smile, I pray, is I learned from The Smurfs that 90 minutes=an hour and a half. As a young child, The Smurfs were on from 8-9:30 on Saturday mornings.

:grouphug:to all

My 8th grade Art teacher - opened the world of art to me !! Fostered a love of art in me !!!
My beloved Aunt who took my sister & me to the mobile library to get books !!! So love reading !!! Same Aunt who always had a craft for us to do !!!

Cooking - running a house - learning to cook and keep a house - it amazed me as a teenager how many of my friends had no clue how to cook , clean or pay bills etc - I taught my kids to do these things you never know what may happen in life you need to be prepared

Here's something funny...while I never got the Lenox set I really wanted, I have a couple of sets of these Spode plates. I bought them at the same time I saw this cute set from Pfaltzgraff called Evergreen Ernie that I also had to have. I can't bring myself to put them away after the holidays. So Evergreen Ernie (dinner plates are snowflake rimmed and side places are snowmen) and the Spode Tree pattern are in full use year round in our house 🤣

Exceptional teachers/professors - At first, I found myself listing specific people, but I think the key is the ones that really stand out. There are some really good ones, but every now and then, you get someone who is a life changer. Even if they're not life changing for you, you can watch these exceptional educators and how they really resonate with some people to the point of having major impacts on lives.

All of the colleges that offered DD18 acceptances - It's a long story about our approach, but when it was decision time, she had 14 options to consider and no true rejections. While her #1 was a provisional offer that she opted to decline, she got into three schools with comparable prestige and program status to prove to her that she was qualified for #1 even though our state's system is really warped. The remainder of the schools had a lot of nice merit aid offers that got her really thinking about going someplace where she's truly wanted. Grateful for all of it!

Field Trips - Yes, it was nice to get away from the school, but you hit a point where you realize how much you learn from experiences outside of the classroom. I had an AP Western Civ teacher that took us to the Met in NYC. We were tasked with assessing art from different periods and regions to make determinations about cultural and governmental impact on the art/artist. I was even able to expand a bit on mine because I had pieces from both the master I'd chosen and his mentor. We had some specified time periods and one freebie...just whatever looked interesting that might contrast to the periods we were focusing on in school.

Learning-related things:

Travel. While much of our travel is to Disney, we do go other places, too. Regardless of the destination, I'm grateful to have had the chance to explore different locations and meet/talk/learn from people whose experiences are different from mine.

DH's profession. While I have worked in a variety of settings, as a PhD biophysicist, DH has always worked at universities. This has given me the opportunity to access cutting edge libraries, high-level research facilities, and other educative resources, as well as take classes (free, as the spouse of a faculty member).

Math. I finally learned the basics of math, and after teaching it individually through special ed, the information is stuck in my brain forever. It's very helpful at tax time, in the grocery store, when traveling, planning my gardens, and when trying to split the restaurant bills and calculate a tip!

My parents were very critical, so school was a place of affirmation and recognition of my intelligence and talents. My favorite moment was when I heard the band and chorus teachers arguing about who would get to select me to participate in the all district concert! Like I said, very much needed for my self-esteem.

My favorite subject to teach in elementary school was math, even though I had not been a very good math student. (They went so fast!) I knew al the ways that kids could go wrong in their thinking and helped match their learning styles to the subject. This was especially true with my SpEd kiddos. They loved all the tricks for the 9X table!

I was able to write well and hadn’t experienced a very challenging teacher until 11th grade. What an eye-opening experience it was when I got my first paper back with red ink on it! I learned so much from her and she was my absolute favorite teacher in HS.

Oh, good one!

I have a few pieces of hand-me-down furniture that hold a lot of sentimental value and are great quality. They're actually some of my most sentimental items.

3 school or learning-related things you're grateful for: -

All the books I had access to, mainly care of my parents, but also through primary school and our local library. Reading was a big part of my childhood and reading for pleasure is so, SO good for language development.

All the sports clubs at my primary school.

That I was able to go to university. I know that's a privilege not available to all.

TGIF FRIENDS! :yay:

I’m going with the colors of The Chicago Blackhawks, which is a team our family enjoys watching and following.

#1 - Red - My favorite color and I do enjoy buying a lot of red things. One of my favorite red things is my red chair in my family room (which is the quiet room in the house)

#2 - White - My Wedding Dress - Every time I look at our wedding photo, which is framed in our hallway, I love my dress a little more. Hard to believe we’ll be married 30 years next year.

#3 - Black - My Mini Van - I no longer have it, but it was the best vehicle during DD21’s travel softball days. Lots and lots of awesome memories were made with that van (I carted a lot of girls in it) - it was hard to let it go.
