They've cancelled school for tom????? WTH?

I always lolz when the south goes into Armageddon mode for an inch of snow.
I do understand though...still makes me lol.

When I was back in school if they had closed schools for an inch of snow..wouldnt have had much school from like December to February:rotfl:

Today had a snow squal come off the lake and instantly covered the roads and white out conditions. Everyone just shrugged it off and kept driving along :)

Be safe tomorrow everyone and enjoy a lil taste of what us Notherners get for 3-4 months :santa:

BTW, this is all new to me - I grew up in Florida and had never even heard of a snow day until the movie came out several years ago! In FL, we never had hurricane days, rain days, sick days, etc...

Here, the system builds in 13 snow days a year - by earlier start time, late dismissals, etc. If the days are used, okay, if not, the staff and students "lose" the time they've built up in advance.

They do several early dismissals - we have "rod runs" here - school gets out early on those Fridays - but there is a magic time frame - if early dismissal (I think it's noon) happens, a "bank day" isn't charged.

The biggest issue isn't the snow, people, it's the ice - our friends lived in Michigan, got several feet of snow a year - but it's different - if your car slides off the road, it's not down a steep embankment, and they typically just dealt with snow - not the accompanying ice we get here.

Seriously, snow is only fun if you live somewhere that has the ability to remove it efficiently!!!

OR if you have what you need, and your area doesn't require snow removal to have fun. We live on the edge of downtown, and things are walkable (including a store), and we had a blast last year when it snowed! DH even got to work all but one day, because he walked to the lightrail, took that to the train station, then walked a block or so to work in Seattle. (his coworkers, who live in Seattle and said they couldn't get to work were so annoyed with him) We had a pizza place up the block with employees who lived in walking distance, we walked to the video store with employees in walking distance, and the store and coffee shop (employees in walking distance). It was incredible!

I so wanted it to snow this winter, but I just don't think it's going to this year. :(

OP is it because where you live they are not equipped or prepared for snow and ice?

Up here the schools never close. Even when it is -32c/ -25f they still remain open. The reason is if some kids make their way to school when the buses might not be running they want to make sure kids are not left out in the cold with no where to go. The kids here still go outside for recess and lunch break even when it is -20c/-4f. After that they are kept inside.

That is why you see Canadians swimming in the pools at WDW while everyone else is wearing fleece jackets in February lol.

not quit an inch of lake effect snow in a squall came through this morning and two buses with students lost control off the road. One special needs van. There were 12 accidents within minutes.
That is the curse of the NE. though.
Tomorrow is delayed due to the cold, I never remember that when I was a kid? But I guess the diesle buses need warmth to run.
Problems with black ice too, where the sun can melt run off that freezes but you can not see it. There were two fatalities in the same spot last week from that.

Hope spring comes soon.

I would love it if we knew ahead of time that school was going to be canceled. Here (NW OH) they wait until the absolute last second to cancel so we already have the kids up and dressed and ready to walk out the door before we see the kids' school on the scroll.

Good luck, I hope that things are not as bad as they are predicting.

That's how it is here where I live in Michigan.

I am thankful that our school system closes for threats of bad weather-I don't want to be out in it in these hills trying to get to the schools.
I think that these same people would be on here complaining if they DIDNT cancel schools in bad weather.......................:sad2:

Our school is closed today. The prediction for my area of Arkansas is 1/2 - 3/4 inch of ice with 2-4 inches of snow on top. This is our 1st snow day this school year. They have too many accidents to report in central Arkansas already.

We're closed here in Nashville too. My kids go to a private school that NEVER closes unless it's completely awful, and we're even closed today in anticipation. They are predicting sleet and freezing rain here from mid-morning to late afternoon, then changing over to snow with a total of about 6" on top of the layer of ice. THAT is what makes driving so awful.

Having lived through a MAJOR ice storm back in the early 1990s, I can tell you that ice is much, much worse than snow. The destruction of nature, the downing of power lines...it was almost unimaginable how the landscape of the city changed overnight. We were without power for almost a week. We couldn't even get out of our neighborhood because of all the trees that had fallen across the road. I would much rather deal with a foot of snow than an inch of ice.

Interesting...what part of WI are you in? We are in Hudson (Wi), just east of St. Paul MN and we have only had 4 snow days in 3 years ---3 of those were actually due to extreme cold (wind chills of 50 below) and one was for white out conditions..not actual "snow" accumulation. We had a day before Christmas that we got 7 inches overnight and didn't close or even delay. I don't think we've even had a weather delay since we've lived here (2007).

Must be a regional thing within the state. Most districts around here rarely close for weather.

To all of you who are getting hit with nasty weather right now...stay safe and warm!

I am south of Fond du Lac, and 40 miles north of Milwaukee. We have had a few bus accidents, so our surrounding schools are very pro-active and shut down very easily. Plus, we are in the Kettle Moraine-twisting, curving roads, and some really large hills. I wouldn't call them mountains, but some go up 500-600 ft. It's funny, because Milwaukee, nor Fond du Lac call off school, because they don't have country people, that need to get into town. Around my area, busses drive 40 miles round trip to pick up kids. So far this year, we had a snow day in December, and lots of late starts, and 2 weeks ago, they sent the kids home early. The school system will always to get in as many hours as they can, so they can call it a school day.

When I was talking about the UP, I was talking more about the Oconto, Marinette, and northern Michigan area. They are always getting blasted with snow.

Are you in TX?

Years ago there was an ice storm and a small amount of snow (looked like someone had sprinkled baby powder all over).
One of the TI sites is built up on a hill and by the middle of the day, a bunch of the employees cars had slid down to the bottom of the hill all on top of each other :scared1:

Seems like ever since then ( early 80's) Texas doesn't taske any chances!

I'm in NC and starting at 9pm they are calling for 8" of either snow or snow/sleet which is A LOT for us. They were explaining on the radio station this morning that its coming in from the west and from the Gulf of Mexico at about the same time. Our kids have to go all day so far, the district next to us is already dismissing 2 hours early. I keep checking to make sure our district doesn't close early as well. I made a grocery run at 7:30am, so I'm all set here :).

We are in central AR, 10 minutes north of Little Rock. I am glad to hear that you all still have electricity! We are lucky enough to have all underground utilities in our community. Stay warm and have fun! :cool1:

My Bro lives in alma he said they got rain but that is about it..:goodvibes

you guys stay worm too :goodvibes

Tulsa, Oklahoma here.

School out yesterday and today. We started getting ice/sleet and freezing rain around 2 yesterday afternoon and continued all night. Today it is supposed to snow all day and thru the night off and on.

I love this weather. Kids and I are watching movies all day. :woohoo:

And...we're off the day after the Super Bowl!!!:woohoo:

Only because NOBODY in Louisiana will be SOBER afterwards.

Before noon, 2 school systems here are closing early. Heck. They don't expect the precip. to get here before 7 or so. Mainly about 10PM, it should be going nicely.

Ok VA is checking in
They haven't closed schools yet but we are expecting 10 - 17" of snow Friday night and Saturday. Yeah 7" gap there to make sure they hit it correctly.
I actually have to go to the grocery store tomorrow morning. Every other Friday is my shopping day. I hope they have milk and bread and ice cream and cookies LOL

We're expecting anywhere from 3-5" where I am. Get above Greensboro and such and it's going to be heavier.

Me too. I hate ice. We had a major ice storm in, I think, 2002 and was out of power for a week. Fortunately my aunt who lived next door had power so we could get a hot meal and showers.

Gotcha :thumbsup2 lol. I would imagine then you would get lot of lake effect snow I assume you're close to Lake Michigan? We're on the other side of the state from you (just east of the Twin cities) It amazes me here, how much snow we get and how few snow days we have considering Hudson and the surrounding areas are fairly rural with a lot of kids living "in the country".

When we lived in Ohio, we would get a lot of snow ( like here, just not as often and not as long) and still they would panic like they never have seen it. They would close schools if they even thought it might snow. Friends back there can't believe when I tell them how much snow we get and no closings or delays. They just know how to deal with it up here.

I was looking into being a bus driver when we first moved here and ended up in a different direction with the schools, I would so not want to be responsible for getting those kids to school in some of the weather we get-but here everyone pretty much takes it in stride!
