There are Vanity plates and then there are VANITY PLATES!

Mine just says "Jaguars", as in the NFL team. I've seen many personalized ones - have to say, the ones on VW bugs are usually the cutest. A family at church has 4 kids - theirs says "MY4TUNE" - I think that one is cute. It doesn't bother me when you can tell what someones' occupation is by reading their plates.

Back to the OP - aren't nurses/doctors/etc required to render aid when they come upon an accident, anyway? My BIL is a EMT/firefighter and is. Or is this a "Who's more qualified to help, RN or EMT" thread, as it seems to me? I see the OP did offer help, but not in the capacity of a RN.

The worst one I have seen was "do me". It was kinda close together. Casual observance would look like "dome". But there was a space in between the o and the m.

IMHO I think if you work hard for something and want to put it on your vanity plate for your car do it@!!!! I personally love looking at vanity plates..and trying to figure out what they mean. The best one I ever saw said GOP4ME2...LOL I laughed till I had to pee..hmmmm

Yay! Another Jaguar fan!
Just to stay on topic...aren't there bigger and better things to be offended over than a vanity plate?

I think everyone needs to calm down a bit.

Is it really going to affect your life if someone puts what they do on thier car?

Would you say the same if a van said A-1 Plumber and a plumber was inside of it?

Is it vain to advertise?

I saw one the other day in the parking it said 4 N Spy.

I have a vanity plate because I HATE our state's license plates. They look horrible. So, I spend an extra $50/year for a University of Alabama plate and the money goes directly to the university.

I think I would be happy to see one that said EMT-RN. If, God Forbid, there was an accident, or I was close to having a baby on the way to the hospital, and I saw this, I would flag that car down.

I love vanity plates. I saw a great one this morning "ONE-GOD"

I am more concerned about this

I didn't tell him that I was a nurse , etc. etc. I would prefer to stand by, call the cops, make sure no harm is done and disappear in the crowd. Are there vanity plates that just urk you?

You ARE an Rn but yet, you'd rather: stand by, call the cops and disappear into the crowd? And yet you're aggravated with someone who is offering help?

I hope I'm misunderstanding this. :(

There is actually a Ct plate that says Gonads. How that got by, I have no idea.

I think I made it clear. I stopped for the accident, calling 911 as I am pulling over. A trucker (Mr. EMt) enters the scene. Lays the victim down beside a burning car leaking gasoline and 'takes charge". Clearly poor judgement. Of course I intervened, making sure that the victim was moved to a safe distance from the burning car until the real "EMT's" arrive. I can intervene without displaying my credentials, unobtrusively taking her pulse to determine rate and quality, offering to take the BP when the ambulance attendant was involved with something else, securing her personal property, purse, etc and handing them to the police. Calling a family member from my cell phone at her request. One doesn't need to make a dramatic entry complete with announcements and vanity plates to be sure the right thing gets done. When she was loaded onto the ambulance, I am happy to slip into the background and disappear. I am a first responder at my job. I am the only nurse in a building of 1200 people plus 160 construction contractors for 8 hour per day. However, the building is occupied 16 hours per day. When I respond to emergencies, I always encourage other first responders to step up, work within their skill sets and take the credit. I would be naive to think that emergencies will only occur while I am on duty. I may not be there for 25% of the emergencies. They need to feel confidence in thier ability to react and not say, "thank goodness the nurse is here." My job is to foster confidence and ability in others. Its much more useful in the long run.

I guess what I am saying is that I don't quite see the need to advertise. I have worked with plenty of men and women who have no need to advertise and they do a superb job in life threatening situations and conversely I have had great skeptism and low confidence in those who wear their credentials on their sleeves and rush into situations in which they neither have the skills nor the judgement. The trucker that stopped to render assistance had poor judgement. He laid a fully mobile victim down beside a burning car that was leaking gasoline yet he used his credentials to validate his actions. While someone may be proud of their accomplishments and have worked hard, is it really necessary to "advertise on a license plate. Additionally, where is the wisdom in doing so. While first responders are protected in many states by the good samaritan laws, why would one want to advertize that they have a license and perhaps deep insurance pockets that can be tapped for percieved mistakes? Again, to me, it calls into question their judgement and motivation.

I have seen license plates that say "MD"followed by numbers. Obviously they are advertising that they are doctors. Is that different because they are doctors or is that not right to do either?

I would also like to add another thought. Often people are afraid to respond if they think that there is someone on site that can "do a better job" and yet they can be unlikely heros. My DS was pumping gas last year at a gas station when a woman drove into the area screaming for help. She had her elderly father in the car who took a big gasp and that was it. When the car came to a stop he was not breathing and he was pulseless. My DS shouted for help, someone called 911 and he pulled the man out of the car, initiated CPR and when another man came on the scene worked with him to maintain breathing and circulation until the ambulance arrived. The man survived. He learned CPR in life ed in high school. One doesn't have to be a professional to save a life.

Many physicians get vanity plates to gain easy access to parking areas outside of emergency rooms and hospitals, particularly if they are on call. DH does not have MD license plates. He sees no need.

The trucker acting like a know-it-all? He was a jerk.

Vanity plates? Big deal. I couldn't care less what people choose to put on their plates.

You're making a lot of assumptions about others based solely on what they have on their license plates. I don't doubt that there are a few people in any profession who will choose a vanity plate out of vanity. However, to then jump to the conclusion that anyone who has such a vanity plate is vain makes no sense. Just because you and your DH don't choose to have vanity plates doesn't mean you have the right to judge the motives of the people who do.

I don't have them because I'm too cheap to pay the extra cost. ;) However, if someone chooses to do so, more power to them. What irks me about vanity plates is that there seems to be some kind of process that reviews the submissions to decide which is OK and which isn't... often times seemingly arbitrary. I can see trying to prevent attempts to include profanity but otherwise why censor these? In Oregon, a vineyard owner tried to get "Vino 1" on his license but had it turned down because it went against the rules - something about not allowing references to drugs or alcohol.

I still see no reason not to say "I'm an EMT". I think if I were in an accident and someone was helping me, I would be more comforted knowing that the person was a professional rather than just some random person who pulled over. Of course that's not to say that "regular" people can't help and save lives, of course they can. I just don't see the big deal.

Oh, and Dawn, why do you feel the need to "Advertise" that you live in Connecticut, in your user ID? It's the same sort of thing, if you ask me. It's just a "name" used to decribe a person. What should it matter if it says the person's occupation, location, year of birth (that's me) or anything else. It's just a word used to describe someone.

I think there is a way to say that you are an EMT and it is effective if you conduct yourself in an appropriate manner. The trucker was hardly appropriate, wasn't particularly happy about taking suggestions from anyone and was even "instructing" the police. That is a little over the top for me.
