No kidding. When I was in kindergarten in 1979, a kid brought a loaded handgun for show-and-tell. He was allowed to talk about it and fire it at the ceiling. Later he cornered me and said, "You're dead at recess." I hid in the bathroom instead of going outside. When the teacher came looking for me and I told her what happened, she just laughed and said, "Oh, don't worry, I've got the gun. Nothing will happen to you."

Uhhh, I don't think so. In 2006 girls have babies and bring them to class. Its the new in-thing to do.

And I hate to break it to you, but in 1973 girls were getting abortions without their parent's consent or knowledge. Probably a lot more readily than girls today.

Dear Laugh O. Grams, I think I love you.

I don't understand viewing "the old days" as so great as compared to today. There were good things about those days and bad things. There are good things about today and bad things about today.

I guess its especially hard to see how the old days were so much better than today when one is not white, not straight, not male, etc.

Anyway here's some to add to the list:

1950: John is black and lives in Alabama. He doesn't get to drink out of the same water fountains as white people.

1965: Merely being in a gay bar or kissing or holding the hand of a person of the same-sex is grounds for arrest. Those who are arrested have their identities revealed in the newspaper so that their employers can fire them, their neighbors can harass and ridicule them, and their families can disown them.

1972: Bob rapes Suzy. She tells the police. They ask why she was out late a night alone with a man and wearing a short skirt. Bob goes free. Suzy is labeled a slut. Her father insists she must have "asked for it." Suzy gets pregnant, but she lives in a state where abortion is illegal. She scrimps together $500 for an illegal abortion only to brought into the ER with septic shock. She makes it, but her reproductive system has been destroyed.

Here's one that's a true story from my family:

1925-1941. Greatgrandmother beats the sh*t out of her children. No one bats an eye.

1941. Greatgrandmother treats greatgrandfather almost as badly as she treats the children. He is a nice man and the marriage appears to have been arranged. One day, when greatgrandmother is in a crazy rage, he brings a shot gun downstairs and points it at her and threatens to kill her. She finally shuts up, and he doesn't kill her. Nobody bats an eye.

1942. Grandmother is 16 years old and Greatgrandmother forces her to quite school and go to work at a factory and give all her earnings to the family. No body bats an eye.

1943. Grandmother gets engaged to grandfather. He is sent to War. The factory goes on strike. Grandmother can't go on strike, her family needs the money. But other women at work threaten her with physical violence if she breaks the strike. Grandmother tells greatgrandmother about strike. Greatgrandmother tells her she doesn't have to worry about getting beat up at work, because if grandmother doesn't break the strike greatgrandmother will beat the sh*t out of her. So grandmother breaks the strike--the strike fails. Nobody bats an eye.

1944. Grandfather gets news that grandmother is dancing with some other man (her cousin) at a party. He sends her a nasty letter breaking off their engagement. Grandmother is devestated. Greatgrandmother kicks the sh*t out of grandmother underneath the kitchen table because she thinks that grandmother would never be so upset unless she had sex with grandfather, so grandmother is a slut. Nobody bats an eye.

1945. A piece of shrapnel gets lodged in Grandfather's stomach. He is sent back to U.S. He and grandmother get married and she finally moves away from greatgrandmother.

1948. Grandparents have two year old baby (aunt) and are dirt poor and their marriage is miserable because of money and grandfather's temper. Grandmother wants to leave grandfather--she tries to move back home, but greatgrandmother throws her out. Grandmother still says, to this day, that if her mother had not been such a horrid b*tch she would never have stayed married to grandfather.

1950. Grandmother's younger sister (great aunt) has gotten married. Her husband verbally and physically abuses her in plain view of greatgrandmother. Greatgrandmother indicates she is happy that the husband is giving her what she deserves. Greatgrandmother has an IUD removed and begins having more babies.

1955. Aunt does something naughty. Grandmother punishes her the way she has been taught--with a belt. Aunt cries and cries. Grandmother cries and cries and cries and cries because she has become what she despies--she is now a child abuser like her mother. She vows never to do more than lightly spank her child again and she never does.

1965. Grandmother goes to visit great-grandmother. Grandmother finds two children (her younger brothers) tied up and sitting on two chairs back to back. Their mouths are bleeding. Greatgrandmother tied them up and slapped them until they bled because she was angry at them. Everyone is warned not to leave the grandkids with greatgrandmother.

1982. I am born.

1983. Greatgrandmother dies.

1998. Mother tells me I'll never know how happy she was that greatgrandmother died before I was conscious enough to ever have to know her.

Oh Please, the scenarios listed in the post are funny and absolutely true. I can't speak for Charade, but I don't think the post was implying we need to turn the clock back on Civil Rights.

Its a joke people, lighten up.

1973: Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up best friends. Nobody goes to jail, nobody arrested, nobody expelled.

Oh please. The only place this ever happens is in an after school special.

Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his father's car and his Dad gives him a whipping.

1973: Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college, and becomes a successful businessman.

2006: Billy's Dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. Billy's sister is told by state psychologist that she remembers being abused herself and their Dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has affair with psychologist.

Because just making the kid work to pay for the window is some kind of liberal hippie response? A whipping is the only way to teach a lesson? The affair with the counselor crap is too stupid to even deserve a response.

Scenario: Mary turns up pregnant.

1973: Five High School Boys leave town. Mary does her senior year at a special school for expectant mothers.

2006: Middle School Counselor calls Planned Parenthood, who notifies the ACLU. Mary is driven to the next state over and gets an abortion without her parent's consent or knowledge. Mary given condoms and told to be more careful next time.

Ooh! How about this scenario: Mary keeps the baby, and the boy is passed off around town as Mary's little brother. The child doesn't find out that his "mother" is really his grandmother until he is an adult. That revelation is just one of the things that leads young Ted Bundy to distrust women and become one of the most notorious serial killers in our nation's history.

My goodness, no one has much of a sense of humor, do they?

Must be the full moon...

I had to laugh at the "Smoking Dock". In high school, not only would I take a stroll to the restroom for a smoke break during class, I would bum a cigarette from my teachers! :rotfl2:
If anyone got caught with pot, the only punishment was a good talking to! Early 1970's. Times sure change.

I thought the original post was great, and too true. I am so sick of the politically correct overkill. Everything has to be taken SO seriously, and analyzed to death.

I was thinking about the smoking dock when I first read the opening post as well. At my first high school back in early 81, they had a smoking dock and it was a real loading dock behind the school that had a section of it boxed in by a yellow paint stripe. You could smoke but it had to be in that area only. I was a Marlboro "Red" fan myself and I'm sure I looked like a dork trying to learn how to smoke, yet look cool at the ripe old age of 14.. :rotfl2:

Rain, snow, or freezing weather, there would be a bunch of us standing there like idiots, but we were cool idiots though. :lmao:

That quote reminds me of a old episode of Frazier. It's the episode where Roz gets pregnant from a one night stand and Frazier tells his dad (Martin) about it. Martin tells everyone back in the good old days that they would send the girl away to a cousin/aunt in a different state and she would hide the fact she was pregnant and secretly give birth to the child. The Child was then raised by the girls family as a new brother or sister and no one was the wiser. Martin then goes on with a fond "remembering when look" and says back then we had morals and decency. Everyone just looks at him and is stunned into silence. :lmao:

Great show and funny thread.
