The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

Oh Aimee, I'm sorry. Do they have a cancellation list you could put your name on????

That's what my colleague suggested, I didn't even think about it at the time. I'll call tomorrow. I work 3 blocks from him so I can get there in less than 10 minutes.

Gretchen It must be a man thing about soup not being a meal. I remember when I was first married and low on cash. I asked my husband about maybe eating a vegetarian meal one day a week. He thought that was a good idea until it came time to eat it. He was looking all over for the meat. :lmao::rotfl2:

This made me laugh. Vegetarian and soup do not fly here either...MEN!

Aimee - I'm so sorry you have to wait! Try for a cancellation!

Well, I decided to make a Rachael Ray recipe. Meatball and Spinach No-sagna. It sounds really good. We'll see. I've got to start it in just a few minutes. Alan is home early tonight, so we'll all get to eat early.

DH had his interview; we're not sure how it went. It could take a while to hear anything back, I think they are interviewing a lot of people. :scared: Thanks for the support. :grouphug:

I can actually say without being overly dramatic, it's freezing outside! I had to go help DH get the ice off the windshield. My bright idea was dumping cold water on it, which then froze! But then a couple more pitchers full did the trick. My neighbor was yelling across the street, Don't dump hot water on there, you'll crack your windshield! I'll bet there are a lot of cracked windshields around Nawlins today. We just don't know how to handle this. :confused3

Yikes! I'm glad that you didn't put hot water on it! :scared1:

 Turning the car on and running the defroster on high is a lot easier. Do cars in NOLA even have defrosters??

:lmao: I bought my car within the city limits of New Orleans and I can tell you they have heaters and defrosters! I've used the defroster a fair amount actually. All but once it was for that fog on the window, not ice. My friend's car has a "snow" button. She says "If I push it, will we get snow?" :rotfl2:

This is what I first thought of. I always turn my car on about 15 to 20 minutes before I have to go anywhere during the winter. The defrost has time to work, and the inside of my car gets nice and toasty!

That drives me positively batty, having to wait 20 minutes for the car to warm up!

Sheryl- next time use a credit card, works much better then water. ;)

This is what I did. This morning the entire windshield was covered with a thin layer of frost. Took care of it really fast! :thumbsup2

My mom asked me if I had an ice scraper. I told her I'd sort of been looking for one of those little ones, just to have it, but have not seen any!

Oh and Popovers are huge here in Maine...more likely to find that in your bread basket at resteraunts then rolls or sliced bread.
The best ones I have ever had are at the Jordon Pond House in Acadia National Park. (the only resteraunt in the park). I even bought the popover tin they sell in their gift store so when I make them at home I have a feeling of being there, lol.

Okay, I saw the picture of a popover and still do not understand what they are. Do they have something in them or are they just a fluffy bread?

Surgeon can't see me for a consult until Jan 28... :sad2:

Wow. January 28 is so far away when you're feeling like trash. I hope you can get in sooner.

Sheryl It never occured to me that you gals down in NOLA don't know how to get the frost off your windshield. It is such a common thing for us. I am just glad you did not learn an expensive lesson.

I'm glad it's not a common thing.

I've been having crazy dreams again, but I'm not remembering them well. :lmao: Last night I had a dream that I was walking on a hill and I was all excited about being on a HILL. I was commenting to someone that I had not been on a hill in a LONG TIME and this was exciting! :confused3 :rotfl2:

Have been enjoying this thread for some time now and have gotten some great recipes, one favorite was the brownies with the coconut pecan frosting from Glynis, and have really enjoyed the food photography .I live in the next town over from Disney Ron and actually work in her town .Every once in a while I think we will bump into each other shopping at our local market on the Avenue. Dinner tonight was just leftovers but last night yumm Fried chicken ,recipe from the Barefoot Contessa ,mashed potatoes ,broccoli and salad. My 17 year old son said Oh, chicken again? and my husband quickly told him to appreciate real fried chicken! Which he did ,in the way only a 17 year old boy can mumble"it's good" . At least I think thats what he said. Have been on the boards recently, as I am leaving Wednesday for a 4 night stay at Disney My oldest daughter 21 is in a cheerleading competition with her college squad.:cheer2: They will compete in the Indiana Jones staging area I think I'll be bring a sweater. It's even cold in Disney. Well that's a bit about me. Hope I'm not to late to join this party.

Welcome Carejo.

It ended up costing $304 for the battery, $97 of it was the towing charge. :sad2:

Surgeon can't see me for a consult until Jan 28... :sad2:

 Hang in the Aimee, hopefully something will come open.

DH never had my Portuguese sloppy joes. I guess he liked it, he ate three subs. :)

:rotfl: must of been good!

good luck finding one of those down here!!

Hi.....how long have you been friends with DisneyRon?
What a small world.....

Hey all my best girls:goodvibes

I will never be able to catch up from Friday(so I am going to do a cliff notes version).....Kris and I had a fun weekend....Thanks again for all the Anniversary wishes!!

Not quite sure what I really think of this Zone diet...I think weight watchers is much easier and friendly to follow and do. Have any of you done the Zone before? I have done the WW points and it does work for me. (I kind of lost it when my mom died etc)

We leave for vacation in 11 days...mixed feelings on seeing my dad and (ahem) "her". This is the first time in years we are going to Florida and not doing any theme parks....not quite sure what to do with myself, planning wise, lol. We are looking forward to doing the little things, zoo, forts, beach etc etc. Just the fact that I have 7 days of flip flop wearing has me :yay::woohoo:

Here goes my poor attempt at catching up: remember I mean well....

Bethany--Fingers crossed that DH gets a call back on his interview!!
Popovers are Crispy on the outside and hollow and chewy yummy goodness on the inside. They cook by steaming themselves from the inside out...you pierce them with a knife or fork the last few minutes of cooking to let the steam escape so they don't get soggy. After you take them out you open them up and butter them. Kris loves to put strawberry jam on them if I make them for breakfast.
This is my description but Becky I am sure can give a much better one:rotfl:

Laura--Just beautiful on Caili's performance!! :cheer2:

Aimee--:sad2:That is awful how long a wait you have to see the Dr...I agree put yourself on the cancellation list. I am surprised they didn't offer you that.

Maria--I am sorry all of you are not feeling well. Ouch to Greg on the gout, my gram and dad get it. What works for my gram better then her meds is cherry juice from the natural food store. It doesn't taste great, but it helps keep the uric acid from building up in her big toe joint.
I wish I lived closer so I could at least help with errands and such.
When you are feeling up to it, could you pm the contact info list? I would like to have it for vacation, Lord knows I might need someone to talk me off a ledge after seeing my dad.

Glynis--I am sorry you are feeling blue. This is such a hard time of year. I have found that the days I don't go tanning or make it to the gym I feel very ho hum. Glad you bit of sunshine helped.

Sheryl--I had to chuckle a bit as I pictured you pouring water on the windshield...like Janice said I never really gave it any thought that you all wouldn't know what to do...I think it is just survival instinct for the northern states;)

Janice/Gretchen--I can only get away with serving soup/chowder as a meal if it has homemade biscuits on the side and something for dessert to follow.

Kat--I am so sorry that your mil is not adjusting well to the nursing home. It is such a hard adjustment and the guilt for those of us who placed them there is so hard. I wish I lived closer to give you a hug but I will cyber hug ya for now:hug:

Marilyn--OUCH....that is a chunk of change for sure....glad you have your wheels back up and running though!!

Nancy--I just love your Nola stories...(almost as much as Buddy stories....almost;)).............Thank you for sharing the story of your dad :goodvibes

Lauren--My heart is with you as you struggle with the sadness and stress you are dealing with concerning your db.
Glad things are progressing on the new home!

Hmmmmm I know I missed some.....but not bad....hopefully I can keep up until we leave for vacation.

ps---for those that haven't gone on....please check your fb emails......:rolleyes1

No, I think I get it! :yay: They're sort of along the same lines as sopapillas or beignets, except those are both fried. Do you ever put honey in the middle like with sopapillas?

Who made those in the picture? Becky? Is there a recipe for these things?

Wendie- Although I was a little ticked about it just being the battery, it was mainly because I had the stupid thing towed, I was happy that it wasn't what I feared and that I didn't have to have a starter put in. I am afraid to even know what that cost!

Good point....I am sure it was much less then if it had been the starter!!!

I'm so glad you get to go  I know it'll be tough at somepoints though.

Watch the weather before packing the flip flops - it's been miserably cold in Florida lately! Ice pellets, snow, sleet, yuckiness.

The popover talk has me craving lunch at The Zodiac Room - Neiman Marcus' trademark restaurant. Every lunch there starts with a basket of popovers and strawberry butter. SO.GOOD. Anyone else been there?

I picked up Chick Fil A on the way home for dinner. I had it for lunch and it was so good I wanted it again...

Yes it was Becky's picture. I think there must be the recipe for them somewhere in our files of yumminess!!
Are beignets heavy like a donut? If so, these are very different...very light..hollow, chewy and sort of eggy on the inside you can't put anything in them until they are done cooking, then when you break them open you can put butter honey jelly etc etc.....

Oh and I have no idea what a sopapilla is...:rolleyes1

I talked with my dad today and he is excited to see us....he also said the weather where he lives is to turn by Tuesday, and should be in the upper 70's when we are there....even if that doesn't happen I wear flip flops in Maine right up till the snow is above my ankles:lmao:
socks=cotton prisons for my toes!!

Beignets and sopapillas are both fried dough. Sopapillas are fluffier, more hollow on the inside. We'd poke a hole in them with our thumbs and then put some honey inside. We ate them at a restaurant in Denver called Casa Bonita. It's a themed Mexican place. They have rooms that are meant to look like caves, and they have a waterfall with a cliff diver. The best thing on the menu was those sopapillas; the food overall was generally mediocre otherwise!

Help me out here NOLA people...describe a beignet? They're not particularly heavy, but they're not really light or hollow either. They have powdered sugar on top.

Seriously, is it that shocking to anyone that Mark McGuire took steriods! :sad2:

Promise to email the list before you go. I should be off nurse duty tomorrow so I can get it updates & sent.

Marilyn, I think he came clean so he could take the new coaching job.......Sad thing is everybody knew & just pretended it wasn't happening.

Wendie, PM what town your going to be in.....

Bethany any fried dough is a good thing!:thumbsup2
