The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

I cleaned a did laundry all day. We will start decorating tomorrow. I am so glad we had a long weekend.

Anyone want an angry cat? I had to give my long haired cat a bath yesterday. I think she now wants to move to a family that doesn' insist that she gets combed or keeps herself clean.:rolleyes1

Alex wants taco's to go with the rice he has been wanting.:rotfl2: SO I guess I will be slaving in the kitchen again tonight.

Wendie I guess I really lucked out my stepmom was wonderful. Anything I wanted from my dad I could have. At time I didn't want anything changed. When she died all my dad things came to me. I had hoped things would get better for you. I would sit down and talk to your dad and pointedly ask for things that were your mom's that had special meaning for your and Ross. I hope he is reasonable:hug: Also there is no reason you and your brother can't contest the will. "She" has no claim to what is not hers.

:rotfl2::lmao::lmao::rotfl2::rotfl2: You're killing me here! And this delicious food porn will be listed in the OP!

OK, Becky, see how much trouble Vicks has gone to, to make sure you keep posting your porn? We love your stuff!!!!!!!

Maria, I was telling my DM tonight about your square cast iron pan. I was really impressed by that in your pic. I have never seen one like that. Funny thing is a couple of my DBs have laid their claim on all my DM cast iron.

Gretchen, thinking about you.

Vickie, love the food porn!:lmao: Bring it on Becky, that is what lured me on here in the first place.

Wendie, I like Glynis' idea too! :grouphug:

Maria, I loved seeing your pretty table. I did not use my good stuff. I worked my patootie off, and just knew the kids would not appreciate or respect it. I was left to clean everything by myself. :sad2: DH helped a bit but the rest just walked away from the table after eating. I find this so frustrating but have to bite my tongue. Our relationship with DSkids has been great and dont want to offend them. Vent over. I really miss female companionship over the kitchen sink during clean up. Thaat is something I always loved growing up, we had so many laughs and would gossip then.

WFD- my leftovers travelled to my DM. I brought her half of my turkey, candied sweets and greenbeans casserole. She whipped the turkey into Turkey a la King over english muffins...yummy comfort food.

My house looks beautiful right now with all the decorations. I just have to decorate the tree tomorrow morning. It is so much work transitioning seasons.

good night !

/
Ann -- I am so glad everything went well at your DB's.

Glynis -- I hope Timothy had a very happy birthday!

Wendie -- I agree with Glynis. Please take anything that means something with you whenever you visit. My grandfather had a girlfriend who took everything from his WWII medals and memorabilia to all of his grandchildren's trust funds. None of us cared so much about the money, but the loss of history was difficult.

Vickie -- you are so funny!!

The kids and I went to my ILs for dinner today. They had grilled lamb chops, grilled asparagus and roasted potatoes.

Tomorrow, Caili and I are going to the Nutcracker. One of her friends is in it. It should be fun!

:rotfl2: Vickie! You even had my DH chuckling

That is frustrating. It feels disrespectful (to me anyways) when I take time to cook something and someone else doesn't at least offer to clean up. Could you invite one of them to help you next time? Would that go over okay? Maybe say 'Susie, I'd love to hear more about your classes/work/hobby! Would you come help me dry the dishes so I can hear more about it?'

Or is that shady?

I finally got my Mickey D's and Crack in a Cup tonight. I'm feeling much better

Tomorrow is 1st Sun of Advent! I have to get there EARLY to finish up a few things on the Christmas decorations I put up earlier this week then get ready for worship prep. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE worship during Advent. We are a very liturgical church and the banners, candles, processionals, music, etc just makes my day. I'm on the platform tomorrow so I can't wear my bright red patent heels I wanted to wear (think it'd be a tad tacky to wear with my robe, heh?) so I need to find something I can wear with black pumps.

And for Becky - WFD:

It kind of makes me angry, since it shouldn't have happened. Something similar happened at the cave 5 years ago. It had a happier ending, then, and the authorities wanted to close the cave at that point. However, a local spelunking group fought the closure and won. Tragic!

That's so terrible! I'm originally from Utah, so this really struck me. I can't help but wonder how many friends and aqcuaintances may have known him and been personally affected. And his poor wife! I'm just aching for her. She'll be in my prayers.

I need to get out of the house for a showing so we are going to breakfast...then off to MILs to see her for her bday that just past. Have a great day...love to all! BBL tonight.

Love Lily! I have pics to post later too.

Hope the showing went well. I'm sure you'll be on cloud nine when your house sells. I hate the selling stress!

I like a lot of the same favorite Food Network chefs and shows that you guys like. I like Giada's recipes a lot, but she always seems to be seducing the camera man. I like watching her better when she's not on her own show. I was surprised no one else likes Bobby Flay, though. If we're going to grill, he's the man! And I actually made his sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving. They were a big hit, especially with my husband. He normally hates sweet potatoes, but this was his favortie dish on Thanksgiving. If you like spicy, these are great. Not grilled, just baked in the oven.

Bobby Flay's Smoked Chile Scalloped Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients:

2 cups heavy cream
1 heaping Tbsp. chipotle pepper puree (I used canned chipotles and adobo sauce, blended until smooth)
3 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (1/8 of an inch)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Whisk together cream and chipotle puree.

In a 9x9 casserole dish, layer potatoes.
After each layer, season with salt and pepper
and drizzle on about 1/3 cup of the chipotle cream.
Continue layering in this manner for about ten layers,
or until potatoes are gone. Pour any remaining cream
evenly over the top.

Cover and bake for 30 minutes. Remove cover and
continue to bake for another 45 minutes to 1 hour,
until cream is absorbed and potatoes are cooked through.

I would love one of those right now!!!!!!!!!!

I told Marisa the other day while we were chatting but needed to say I finally ordered my Keurig!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited!

Greg made it home safely. He had leftovers.
Sunday is his birthday & I'm trying to talk him into opening his presents now but he won't:confused3 You wouldn't have to ask me twice.

Ann, I love my cast iron.......One of our friends shops garage sales & buys cast iron....they are usually all rusted & gross. He uses vinegar or something like that & then seasons. They look just like my Grandma's when he is finished cleaning them up.

Vickie, you had me cracking up:rotfl::rotfl:

Hi, everyone. Been very busy lately and haven't spent much time on the DIS.

For those of you who are Food Network watchers, who are your favorite chefs and shows?

Hello! Paula Deen!

Maria, hope your back isn't to bad.

I ended up being really happy I went to my DB's. We ended up having a nice time and the kids had a ball. Emma was a little princess, my DM was holding her so proudly. I have to say I felt very loved, my other five brothers were very supportive and helped me relax...not a tear was shed for a change.

I just finally showered. DS and I packed away all the pilgrims, pumpkins and scarecrows. He is dyiong for the Christmas stuff to go up.

That's great.

I'm not posting pictures anymore until some other people start. I feel like the picture hog of the wfd thread.

Dinner: leftovers. I'm all done with turkey for a while.

Happy Birthday Timothy! :wizard:

Is he really one, Glynis? Hard to believe! He's such a beautiful boy.

Well now that the new computer is here you will see me start! And I don't have to buy a seperate card reader, it's built in! :woohoo:

The story is just so tragic!

It is! And so sad!

I have one and I love it!

Has been a busy couple of days and I just finished setting up the new computer. :cloud9: I am in love with this thing. Now I have to come up with something really nice to thank my cousin, she sat out at Best Buy and got it for me.

Thanksgiving day was nice, we had it here then at midnight we started the marathon shopping. Went to Toys R Us and were in line to check out for over 2 hours. :scared1: From there we went and dropped my BFF and her one son at Old Navy while my sister and I ran to my house to get her Kohls coupon and some food for us all. Got back and stood in line for 45 minutes in the rain waiting for Kohls to open. Luckily we were only in the store for about 20 minutes.

Next was Target and oh my stars in heaven!:scared1: We got there and there wasn't too bad a line, which there never is. Decided to get something to drink at McD's and were gone for 15 minutes, when we got back the line was all the way down the front of the shopping center. I have never, in 8 years of doing this, seen a line that long at Target. Only got two of the things I wanted, just didn't have the energy to fight all of the people in the store.

Ended our night at Bob Evans for breakfast then home where I laid down on the daybed in the family room and slept until 2:30. Went back out that night to get stuff for making quilts at JoAnn and see if there was any of the stuff I missed still at Target, did end up getting one of the DVD's I wanted.

Today I went and picked up the computer from my cousin and took the girls to see Planet 51, was going to see The Blind Side but it was sold out, going to go see it in the morning with the older DN.

After 5 days off, I am going to be dragging on Monday!

Marilyn you did some power shopping!!!!!!!
Happy your loving the new computer.

Greg had breakfast at Bob Evans Saturday morning.....:goodvibes

Good Morning! I should have some free time to catch up later...for now I wanted to post some pics. We have another showing in a while and then Tom will head back. Andrew has been by the donor. I did not take many of food on T'giving. I just can't seem to be that organized. I made way too much food again. I am loving the left overs but tomorrow may be the last day I could eat them, then it will be over load!

And for Becky - WFD:

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Okay Becky! Start posting please:worship::worship:

Aimee- I was thinking the same thing. Some of my best conversations with Erica have been in the kitchen after a meal. Doing chores together invites a more personal conversation I think.

I like a lot of the same favorite Food Network chefs and shows that you guys like. I like Giada's recipes a lot, but she always seems to be seducing the camera man. I have to admit that I keep a grudge...even with a TV personality :rolleyes1 I always watched the original Iron Chef and he threw a temper tantrum with Chef Morimoto when he lost :sad2:. It is silly I know, but I have changed the channel every time one of his shows come on. I watch the Next Iron Chef but I wish that he was not on it.

I told Marisa the other day while we were chatting but needed to say I finally ordered my Keurig!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited!

Greg made it home safely. He had leftovers.
Sunday is his birthday

Happy Birthday Greg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are going to love your Kuerig!

Thanksgiving day was nice, we had it here then at midnight we started the marathon shopping.

Holy Shopping! :woohoo: I never go shopping on Black Friday but my kids usually do. They generally set up stations at several stores and keep their cell phones handy. They have a strategy that I bet could be trademarked and marketed and are generally having pancakes in Cracker-barrel by the time I am toasting my leftover cranberry muffin:rotfl:

Marilyn I tried to go to old navy at 8:00 in the morning but the customers where beyond rude. They blocked the merchandise and wouldn't let anyone past and even reached around you when you did get close to something. I did ask one guy who was reaching around me if he found what he was looking for? He said yes. I replied but I am having a hard time seeing around your hands back off. I ended up leaving cause I thought I was going to lose it. Nothing is that serious.

This year black friday at some stores was more cut throat. All the other years it was great people held you space in line and where friendly.

Tink I forgot to mention Bobby I really like to watch his Throw down show and also Guy Fieri I watch way to much on that channel.:rotfl2: I don't watch too much of Giada cause I am afraid one day she is going to come out of her tops.:eek:and I have a teen aged son who would probably like nothing better.:lmao: He would die if he thought I knew what he was watching.

I feel like being creative tonight. We will see what actually happens between now and then. We are supposed to decorate today.

I like Giada's recipes a lot, but she always seems to be seducing the camera man. I like watching her better when she's not on her own show. I was surprised no one else likes Bobby Flay, though.

Hey, I mentioned Bobby, love him! I don't particularly care for Giada's show but her recipes, that I've tried, ROCK!:thumbsup2

WFD - Giada's Osso Buco, pasta in pesto and eggplant sticks.

Lauren - Your table was lovely!!!!!!!

Tinker-tude - I didn't realize you were originally from Utah! So cool!!! They had John's funeral yesterday, and from what I understand, it was very well attended. The family is surrounded by 2 communities, and are being helped through this. Obviously, they didn't have a casket, but a beautiful portrait of him at the front of the chapel. Later this week, they will decide how to close off the cave. The leading suggestion right now, is to blast it shut and seal the entrance with a concrete slab where the family can put a memorial plaque. Oh, by the way, I watch WAY TOO MUCH Food Network. Not so much during the day, anymore, but I watch the evening shows every night. My kids love to watch Unwrapped, and the Challenges. I love to watch Paula Deen, Guy Fieri (Triple D), and there are several other shows I love. I really love to watch the network from Halloween through New Year, as the special shows are marvelous!

Marilyn - Sounds like you did ok with Black Friday. I did all my shopping online, in my jammies (of course, I had to be up before the butt crack of dawn in order to get anything). I may never go out in the cold to shop again! Good luck with getting back in the work routine tomorrow.

Maria - Please wish Greg a Happy Birthday from me! I hope you guys have a great celebration! And, for the record, I'm with you! I'd have opened all my presents early!!!

Lauren - Great pictures! I thought your Thanksgiving table looked lovely! I hope the house showing goes well!

Dinner tonight will be something with leftover turkey. Dad ordered 2 turkeys for our little family, and we are just now cutting into the second bird. So, I've got to come up with something yummy! We don't have room in the fridge for anything new until I get rid of that bird. I'm thinking turkey pot pie, or turkey and dumplings. We'll see! I'm staying home from church today, as I don't feel well, so I've got time to come up with something. We will be having a caramel apple pie for dessert. I bought all the ingredients for pie night, but ended up not having time to make it. So, today's the day. I'll put it together while Alan and the kids are at church.

Make it a great day, Ladies!

Aimee and Vickie, you had me cracking up!

OK, here are some recent photos. The only photo I took on Thanksgiving...roasted root vegetables:

I just put a photo of Caili in her Nutcracker dress up on facebook.

So, here is a dinner disaster story for you. The other night I made asian chicken (for me) and beef (for John) that I planned to serve over ramen noodles in a broth of sesame, garlic, and ginger. I had two pans going with the meat, plus the pot of sauce. I went to plate the food, filled one bowl with ramen, then somehow knocked the pot with the remaining ramen and all of the broth onto the floor. John jumped over to grab some paper towels to help clean up, and somehow knocked the other bowl of ramen onto the floor! So, no ramen or broth. All we had for dinner was the meat. I did not take a picture. :sad2:
