The What's For Dinner Thread - May '09(recipe index in OP)

Hi Everyone,

We had a great time with Becky. The movie reviews were a bit mixed, but dinner reviews were great. We had striped bass with a mustard sauce, eggplant sticks, sauteed corn and salad. Becky also made sangria. Today, I wasn't expecting to have dinner with my parents, but my dad got out of work early so we had lobster rolls. So yummy!

He finished up with both umpiring and playing two weeks ago. Now we're getting everything together and ready for his move in three weeks....:sad1:

This summer is flying by. Kyle is going to do so great at LSU. I know it is really hard on you, but I think it is good for kids to go away to college. It is a life experience.

We are going to Sturbridge Village today

I hope you had fun! I have been there too many times to count.

When we tell him to get our nose, he now grabs it and then expects us to say "beep beep" too cute!

Lauren, that is SO cute!

Anyway, my neighbor and I decided to host an impromptu neighborhood get together in the common area behind our houses.

It sounds like you had a fabulous time. I think the impromptu gatherings are the best!

Marisa told me that some parents wer crazy mad at the theater.

Becky and I used to work at a movie theater, and believe me, getting nasty is not recommended. I won't tell you some of the things that went on to get back at obnoxious patrons...just be nice to people who are serving you food. Especially if they are teenagers with nothing to lose.

Those parents need to see a video of themselves.

I agree. Where are the people who post to YouTube when you need them?

Aimee -- Good luck dealing with that situation. I've been trying to come up with words of wisdom, but I am falling flat tonight. I know I would be upset if Caili was the child being hit. She would not want to return to class.

If I missed anyone, I will catch up better tomorrow.

Nan- I think the cake would hold very well. I wish someone would get over here and stop me from eating it..........:rolleyes1

I live close...

Bethany, we need your updated info. Hope the apartment & furbaby are making you smile!

:headache: DUH....I have been reading this thread all along, but I realized last night I haven't POSTED in forever! :confused3 And now I can't remember anything I've read that I intended to comment on...:sad2:

Everything is going well. :thumbsup2 I've been such a lazy bum the last couple of weeks. I think I needed that time to relax.

I am really enjoying my apartment. The location is good and it's NICE.

Anabelle is good too. She is growing and she is 100% puppy. We still don't know what she is, but I'm sure she's got hound in her...probably beagle. She sniffs around constantly and she tries to kill her toys. :rotfl: Her favorite activity is CHEWING....particularly if it's FOOD. :lmao: She'd love this thread!

Oh...and I realized I have not had a single peanut butter sandwich since I left NY! :rotfl2:

Oh, the child is only 15 months old. She cried for a few minutes, got her pacifer, and went back to playing. Typical behavior for that age. Mommy and daddy would have never known she had been hit had we not told them when they came to check on her - she was happy as a clam. I feel like I need to let parents know of anything that happens while they are gone at this age.

There were 4 parents of toddlers in the room at the time and all of them said it was a normal toddler interchange. Toddler 1 has toy, toddler 2 wants toy, toddler 2 hits toddler 1 and takes toy, toddler 1 cries in teacher's lap for a few minutes. Her parent's reaction was what took me by surprise... dad, especially, was just traumatized and convinced toddler 2 needs professional help for hitting. :confused3

I'm repeating myself, sorry :sad2:

ME! Me ! Me! I can help!

I'm on my way :car:

:lmao::lmao:

Oh...and I realized I have not had a single peanut butter sandwich since I left NY! :rotfl2:

Oh sure...she goes to Nola and thinks that pudding cake is hers!

You are too funny...no PB&J! Relax and enjoy your new home, your little girl is keeping you busy! I just want to know when you make red beans and rice......

Laura- I knew that the food this weekend would be good! I liked HP. I had never seen any of the movies in the theater so I really enjoyed it.

Did anyone watch TNFNS?

Did anyone watch TNFNS?

I watched it on DVR while I was feeding Emma last night. Thrilled with the results & will be happy with either winner at this point.

-------

Kat, Pudding cake recipe filed away for my boys. Ron loves chocolate cake, but I am more of a cheesecake girl!;)

-------
Weekend flew bye. Saturday night we went out to eat at Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse. Luke loved the animated animals they have. Food was okay. I had trout, and we shared calamari. I had my first mixed drink since Emma. A vodka and cranberry never tasted so darn good. Emma was a sweetie and slept all day, and Luke got some much needed fresh air.

Last night we eneded up ordering pizza again because my Step-DD stopped in and didn't leave till late.

WFD- Shake and bake pork chops w/ apple sauce. (that we were suppose to eat last night, DH's request)

Hi Everyone!

What a busy weekend! I will catch up later, but I skimmed over. I will catch up later!!!

Ann I love Sturbridge Village. Its only 45 minutes from my house, and when my work does offsite meetings, we all gather there!

Aimee I would let it slide ONCE. That's it. If Kady was hit then I would expect the teacher to address it with the parents and then discipline the child. Separate them if needed. But just once... A second time and I would lose it. Kady is sensitive, and that would send her over the edge. If a mark was left, then I would have lost it. I dont think that it is the "norm" though. Kids in daycare hit and use aggression because that is how they get attention or toys from other children. I think if they hit and are disciplined, they wont do it again. Kady doesnt hit, and never has. I have instilled "the fear". I am overprotective, but I can see where the parents are coming from. I hope this all works out though:hug:

Sheryl REST!! If you need me to come and take you to dinner, I have a comfy truck!!! But seriously dont overdo it!!

Maria I am free any weekend in August.

Kat When is the closing?

Bethany No PB&J? What are you eating? Let us know!!!

Nan I didnt watch TNFNS yet so dont give spoilers!!!

Have a great day everyone!

Cathcing up from the weekend...

Lori, hello! it is good to see you again.

Sheryl, I am glad that you are doing so well! Sorry that the dinner did not work out perfectly, but you mist be happy that you are healing so quickly.

Glynis, your party sounds like so much fun! I wish I lived in a neighborhood like that. Nobody talks to each other around here.

I did not take photos over the weekend. Yesterday I was at John's aunt's house. She grilled a turkey. She grilled it for so long that it completely fell apart when it came off the grill! I did not try any of it. I brought along a caprese salad and sangria, and there was also grilled summer squash, and potato salad. Laura told you what we had on Saturday. Here is a photo of Friday's dinner. I made fish sandwiches and corn on the cob:

Friday was also the first day that they actually had a bunch of things for sale at the farmer's market! The weather has been delaying the harvests. Here is a photo of what I got on Friday:

Here is a photo of Thursday's dinner. This was the night that we had omelets. Well, John did anyway. Here is his omelet:

And here is what happens when the omelet gets destroyed when you try to flip it. :rotfl:

I am grilling tonight. Right now I am thinking grilled chicken, grilled summer squash, and a tomato-arugula salad.

Marisa- you need to keep up!

Becky- I would totally eat your scramble!

Dinner is still in the air. I have chicken I can roast with potatoes adn carrots but I really want salmon. I bought more Coho salmon yesterday and wnat it like I cooked it last week. I think it was a touch overcooked so I need to watch it. The sugar and lemon seemed to cure it a little but boy did it lkeep that beautiful color!

I think you handled the situation perfectly. The parents were informed of the incident, and that's really all you need to do. Like you said, kids that age can't verbalize what they want or what they are feeling, so they act out. You let the hitter know it was inappropriate and he was disciplined. Since you are not his parent, you did what you could without overstepping your bounds. The physical stage is one that all kids go through.

If the little girl's parents are still concerned, maybe you could ask them to come and sit in with the toddler group so they can see how they interact. It's truly an eye opening experience. I can understand they were upset, but they will eventually learn that they can't wrap her in bubble wrap to keep her from ever getting hurt. She needs to learn to interact with others as well.

Well, it's another hot, dry day here! Our garden has run rampant! I have zucchini coming out my ears! If y'all lived anywhere close, I'd be leaving it on your doorstep!!!

Dinner tonight will be a curried chicken salad and zucchini patties. I'm trying out new ways to use it, so I hope this recipe works!

I need to go get dressed while the troops are still sleeping. Then, I'll be ready to face the day!

Quick fly by, hoping things settle down this week!!!

Maria - Kyle has finished his steroids and is doing much better. He didn't like the way the steroids affected him, he had trouble sleeping and made him extremely hungry all the time.

Marisa - Closing is set for 9/4, still have to get through inspection and financing first.....

Vicki - Pics please!!!!

Laura - I know that Kyle really needs to be on his own, he doesn't realize how heavily he depends on me. This is going to be very good for him, but that doesn't make it any easier for me.....:sad1:

Bethany - I'd invite you over to share this cake but my house is a disaster!:scared:

Nan - Loved Food Network Star, they are my two favorites!:thumbsup2

WFD - Leftovers!

Aimee -- I do think the dad overreacted, especially about saying the hitting child needed professional help. However, if this is an ongoing problem in the toddler room with children hitting each other, I would develop a brochure or handout materials to distribute to the parents that give strategies on how to get their kids to use their words or other actions instead of hitting/biting/kicking.

Liam has a baseball game tonight (hopefully, it will not last 10 innings like Saturday's game!) so I am just making burgers for us to eat before he has to be at the field.

Oops, I edited my TNFNS post because I previously posted a spoiler...sorry Marisa!:headache:

---------------------------

Becky, I look forward to your farmers market posts. What is that in the lefthand front of pic...purple califlower?? I would love to have a nice farmers market near me. The best farm around is near my DM, I may head there today for corn and a bunch of sunflowers!

Kat, they are so tough to take, poor guy. Glad he finished them.

Don't know if anyone noticed this code but if your searching you might want to take a look, I just caught it signing into the Dis:

My girlfriend Sharon who lost her FIL a few weeks ago now has her Dad in CCU, he was rushed to the hospital after falling off his boat, thank goodness he had a buddy with him. Being he was admitted to a very small hospital by the beach they had to transport him to a medical center around here because they didn't have the team/equipment needed. He is scheduled for surgery at noon. Please keep him in your prayers.

One of my girlfriends shared a story with me of a couple that went through a site for their second adoption so we are going to give it a try. Our goal is 2 children.
If you have a second please take a look at share your opinions, any ideas are appreciated. It was very emotional & tough for me to do over the weekend.

I wasnt ready for that. It had me crying at work. I will have to reread it at home. Where no one can see me.:sad1:

Maria - I loved the website! It's very nicely put together, and tells your story in a beautiful way! You know that you and Greg are in my prayers! You both are going to be wonderful parents, and somewhere there is a birth mother that will think so, too!

Hey y'all,

Moving slow today, I didn't have a good night. I

The aide situation is working out! Thanks for the prayers.
The new girl was able to get the 11-7 shift on her other job, so she could come here morning & night. So Bob went in a little late this morning but that's ok. She sounded like she was going to quit that job today! It really sounds awful, it's a state run nursing home & she has 26 patients to clean, bath, etc. I feel bad for her, but much worse for the poor people not getting decent care because the place is so understaffed.

Kat, That cake sounds good! But please dont bring it over here. I've been overindulging with all the treats friends & family have sent.

Sheryl, please don't push!!!!!!! Wish I was around so we could hang out together.

bbl to catch up...I have a bottle of Nuvo in the fridge, may indulge, my antibiotics are finally finish!!!!!!

I'm behaving myself! I wish we could hang together too! I can't wait for October, so we can!

I know that feeling, I'm sure you enjoy that bubbly vodka!

Sheryl REST!! If you need me to come and take you to dinner, I have a comfy truck!!! But seriously dont overdo it!!

I missed the last episode & it didn't record!

Do you drive one of those BIG trucks? Would I need a ladder to get in it?

Friday was also the first day that they actually had a bunch of things for sale at the farmer's market! The weather has been delaying the harvests. Here is a photo of what I got on Friday:

Maria, Prayers for your friend & her Dad.:flower3: I'll go take a look at your site after I finish here.

Hey all, Vicki has pics on her FB page! She lives in a beautiful place! :goodvibes

I might try cooking today. It will have to be easy though, I'm having trouble keeping my hand bandaged.

I don't know why but I had planted a habanero pepper plant. I have 5 habanero that are ripe & I have no clue what to do with them. I'll probably have to wear gloves just to pick them. Oh that just made me realize I could put a glove on my hand to keep it dry while cooking! I'm going look in the fridge & freezer now!
