The What's For Dinner Thread - March '11 (recipe index in OP)

Okay, am I the only one that doesn't know what SOS is? though I do know biscuits and gravy and am pretty darn good at making it.

Glynis- Glad the back to school shopping is done. I wouldn't worry about a new teacher either, they all have to start somewhere. Our schools don't allow requests, but I would have a problem with 38 kids per class, they try really hard here to keep the max at 20 kids. Our woodstove is a fireplace insert, so it's in the main part of the house so we really notice the dust. This year I'm taking a lot of things out of the room for the winter so I don't need to deal with them. Keep in mind our stove is almost always going from October until the end of April, we only use oil heat for hot water. Again, it's worth any extra work.

Aimee- Hope your feeling better today.

Jen- Glad your feeling better, so far my experience with the dentist is waiting is always worse than the actual procedure.

Ellen- Congrats to Doug! My kiddo has been golfing and my husband is thinking of joining her. Glad Stephanie knows she pregnant now!

Nancy- I'm sorry Anna has so much to deal with.

Hey friends, thanks for all your kind words! Things finally passed by around 8am this morning so I slept all morning and came in late. I'm just sore now. I hate that this is happening again bc it means there is major inflammation going on but I need to just realize that this is my reality.

I picked up dinner tonight and am taking it easy.

Jen, so glad your root canal wasn't too awful!

Princess, I hope this weekend goes well. :hug:

Glynis, so glad you got it all finished!

Nan, what is it about weddings and drama? I hope that zilla doesn't ruin the big day for the couple. Sept 17 is a good day to get married - it's my birthday!

G
Stephanie had her first OB appt. this morning and she called me, and as I answered I heard her say "I REALLY am pregnant" :rotfl2: :lmao: I had no idea she was thinking maybe she wasn't. :rotfl: I guess the EPT wasn't enough proof, so when the dr. said she was, I guess she now is.
Her due date is March 24. Everything looks and sounds very good. :woohoo:

Last night Doug sank the winning putt for his golf team. Now they have to play on Monday for the semis. He was so excited when he got home that he stayed up way past midnight. :rotfl2: He is going to get plenty of practice in as tonight is Men's night and then him and Matthew are in the member tournament this weekend. I feel like a total golf widow!!!

Yes Stephanie........there really is a Santa Clause :goodvibes

Good for Doug! DOes this mean he is out of ZUmba once again? ;)

Back to school clothes shopping is DONE!!!

I took Timothy to the dr. and sure enough his ear was red and swollen. One shot in the butt later, and he's already feeling better.

SChool shopping over :cheer2::cheer2: Poor little Boy:sick:

Get some rest and feel better :hug:

I was talking ot my P therapist and she told me her sister just was in a wedding that was crazy. The bride changed their shoes three times but the day before the wedding she insisted the girls all buy RAIN BOOTS :scared1: to wear. Yes.......a formal wedding with vinyl rain boots instead of any of the three pairs of shoes the girls already purchased. Her sister was just a bridesmaid and spent over $1000 for the pleasure of participating in this wedding. The weekend of the wedding she was up until 4 Am each morning doing projects the bride wanted completed.

Janice - Hopefully one year A's school schedule will allow you to join us at F&W!:goodvibes

I'm still hoping that some of you would consider the 1st week in October, 2013. I'm planning on being there and meeting some of the dis-sers from the Games board. Maybe by then, I'll be so entrenched in this group that all I need is to dig the shovel a little deeper to get to Kansas! :laughing:

Sigh! I know it will all work out, but it's causing a lot of stress.

Timothy was up half the night with ear pain (which of course has gone away this morning), so I made an appointment with the doctor this morning. Poor little guy! It was so sad! He was crying and begging to be held all night long. Guess who else didn't get any sleep last night??? After that appointment, Leslie and I will go shopping for her back to school clothes, then I'm done!

Glad to see that Timothy got to the doctor and seems to be on the mend. But what about you? Did you get any sleep last night and are you feeling less stressed?

The last tooth the guy was horrid, ticked off when I felt panicky and needed to stop a few minutes. He took almost two hours. :mad:

At the end of that one I looked like I had had a stroke.

I think I would have left the chair before the 2 hours were up! :hug:

Donny and Anna are getting married on September 17th. He turns 36 the next day :goodvibes I have not told Buddy about the open house thing, he will flip. He does not mind company but he is worried that I will overdo. I took that fall a while back and I have been like Humpty Dumpty ever since. My shoulder is better but I had told the Dr my knee was really hurting adn now I have this gynormous goose egg thing on it. I told him I am dancing at my son's wedding in 4 weeks so he needs to fix it. I now have another hour on my PT for today and am a bit afraid.

Anyway, Donny would need to make that call to her Mom. I like her mother, she is a ticket :thumbsup2 She would insulate Anna from any drama that might come her way.

I feel badly for both Anna and Donny. He has just about had enough of all the nonsense. The last thing the zilla did was tell Anna that her Mom, who I included in the shower when I found out she was going to be visiting the bridesmaid from Hades, overheard me telling someone I was mad because I had not seen Anna in her wedding gown. Donny said he asked her if she really believed I would say that after all the work I did to make sure that she had a special day and she agreed that I would not have said anything like that. I was asked if I saw the dress and responded that I had not seen it yet but that Anna had sent me a picture. :confused3

For Anna's gift from me I reserved the B&B for her and her family and for the bridesmaids for the night before the wedding. Buddy and I are hosting the rehearsal dinner there and I thought that it would be a nice way for all of them to be together on the Eve of her wedding, not to mention that the grounds are gorgeous and the innkeeper has offered to let them use them for the pictures and have the limo pick them all up there. Donny is wondering what grim things the ZIlla will say to ruin this as well. :sad2:

Why does Anna even have that Zilla in her wedding party? I feel for you.....and I wish you patience and the ability to count to a ZILLA-ion before the 17th September.

When does Anna's mother arrive?

Double celebrations all round! Well done to Doug.....does he think that he did good because of the Zumba class?

Does Stephanie (and your other daughter) live close by?

Hello all! Well, that root canal wasn't bad at all. Honestly, I'm doing well. I feel so much better without all of the pain I was having due to that tooth. Who knew it was so bad that a root canal would make me feel better?

I took Tylenol just to head off any pain, but so far, I'm okay. I go back in 3 weeks for my permanent crown. I still feel a bit funny when I bite, but other than that, I'm good!

Tonight's dinner is SOS. (I'll PM you if you need a translation :rotfl2:)

So glad that you're feeling better. And yes, root canal (with the right dentist) can do that for you.

SOS??? I'll need a translation.

Okay, am I the only one that doesn't know what SOS is? though I do know biscuits and gravy and am pretty darn good at making it.

Nope. This out-of-towner doesn't know what SOS is either.

Hey friends, thanks for all your kind words! Things finally passed by around 8am this morning so I slept all morning and came in late. I'm just sore now. I hate that this is happening again bc it means there is major inflammation going on but I need to just realize that this is my reality.
Sept 17 is a good day to get married - it's my birthday!

Are you going to see a doctor anyway? Glad you're feeling better.

Gosh - Sept 17 seems to be a big day! Happy Early birthday.

DH had another vertigo and nausea spell today; so I rushed home from work. Turns out the doctor suspects he might have meniere's disease. DH is booked in for an MRI next week just to eliminate other possibilities. He's not having a good winter this year....

Spaghetti Verdura or Spaghetti with green vegetables :laughing:

My starting ingredients:

2011August19ScavengerHunt001.jpg

  • Zucchini, 1 – medium
  • Broccoli, a decent handful
  • Peas, ½ cup
  • Spaghetti
  • Stock, or water and stock cube
  • Garlic
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Oil, 1 tablespoon

Cook spaghetti as per instructions in hot boiling water.

2011August19ScavengerHunt002.jpg

When cooked, drain well and set aside.

Fry the garlic with the oil in a hot pan.
NOTE: The garlic is supposed to be minced; but DH didn’t want too much garlic with his meal, so I fried it whole for easy removal later.

2011August19ScavengerHunt005.jpg

Add the broccoli and cook for 1 – 2 minutes.

2011August19ScavengerHunt006.jpg

Add the zucchini and toss for another minute.

2011August19ScavengerHunt007.jpg

Place the peas into the pan and add the stock (or water with stock cube) to half cover the vegetables.

2011August19ScavengerHunt009.jpg

Simmer on a medium heat and toss the vegetables for 2 – 3 minutes. You’ll want some of the liquid to evaporate but still have enough to coat the pasta.

2011August19ScavengerHunt010.jpg

Add the pasta to the vegetables.

2011August19ScavengerHunt011.jpg

Continue to stir until the pasta is well coated with the sauce.

2011August19ScavengerHunt012.jpg

Serve with some parmesan.

My dinner!

2011August19ScavengerHunt013.jpg

NOTE: You can add various herbs to this dish or add cream instead of stock. I chose this simple style because DH’s tummy was feeling a little delicate and this dish always provides him with the comfort food he needs.

Ellen When I got pregnant with A I must have taken a dozen or more pee tests until my doctor would see me. It took so long for me to get pregnant I just could not believe it when it finally took. My Dr just shook his head when I told him.:rotfl2:

Princess and Robin Think military meals and another version is chipped beef and gravy.

UGG I am out of time I will be back

Janice- I think I got it, is it served "on a shingle"?

Princess- Sorry your dh isn't feeling well. I hope the MRI answers some questions.

Aimee- I'm sorry being in pain is your normal, Advent seems such a long time away to wait for surgery- but I guess you probably know that.

Taking a page from Princess' book tonight, fish and chips for dinner. Have a great day all.

Yup now back to work.

Morning, everyone!

I took some Advil PM at about 8:30 last night and went to bed! I slept all night long, and I'm feeling much more rested! Hooray! Timothy also slept through the night (still asleep, actually), so he must be feeling back to normal.

I'm taking the kids shoe shopping this morning, while Alan helps get our stove installed! We both figured it would be much easier to do without 5 "helpers" in the way.

Once the stove is in, we are going to an open house for a pseudo-niece. Alan's best friend's daughter got married a couple of weeks ago. We weren't able to go to the ceremony because of the Disneyland virus, so we are traveling to the open house tonight. It's a couple of hours away, but I'm really looking forward to the drive. Dinner will be on the road.

Have a great Saturday, everyone!

Robin & Princess – I see you’ve been given a clue as to what SOS is and you’ve got it!:thumbsup2

Aimee – I hate it that you have to see this pain as your reality. I do worry about you.:hug:

Nan – Geez, weddings these days are a nightmare. What’s wrong with these brides?:eek: I think I’ll encourage Kyle to elope when that time comes.:laughing:

Princess – The first week of October is a very real possibility for 2013!! The Swan & Dolphin F&W event is the first weekend in October and we really enjoyed it last year.;) I feel for your DH with the vertigo. I suffer with it and it is a horrible feeling. Hopefully the MRI will answer all of the questions.

I have a long overdue hair appointment today. My hair hasn't been this long in decades!

I had enough points on my coke rewards to cash in another restaurant.com certificate so we'll be dining out tonight!

Kat ~ Thanks - I love it!!
A new doo AND dinner out with your guy - ENJOY!!

Glynis ~ I am so glad Timmy is feeling better. Glad your shopping is done also. Sounds like you had a great week.

Linda ~ My Momma always fixed SOS with dried beef over toast points. Oh how I miss that. :sad1:

Janice ~ YES!!! I think you are so right. They (Marty & Stephanie) have tried for many years and I think she just kept thinking this was like the other times. The Dr. saying it really made it real.
WTH is up with your Librarian? I would think that would be the one place you would be trilled to see kids. :confused3

Robin ~ Oh sweetie what a sheltered life you lead. :lmao: :rotfl2: I thought everyone knew what SOS was. God love ya!!

Princess ~ I will be holding you all very close this weekend. I know it will be hard, but maybe not as hard as you think. :hug:
I sure hope DH gets some answers and starts to feel better.
Oh and if you are digging to Kansas - just readjust a bit and hit Nebraska. I will be there waiting for you. :thumbsup2
Yes - I am very lucky. Elizabeth lives in my town and Stephanie is just 35 east.

Aimee ~ My thoughts are with you. Living in constant pain is no fun. I wish I could help.

Nan ~ I thinking of Otto last night. How is the little guy doing?
:lmao: Yes Stephanie there is a Santa Claus. OMG that SO fits her - you have no idea.
And Yes Doug got another kitchen pass for Zumba. I just hope they win!!

TGIF, this week has really drug on. I can't wait for this day to be over. Matthew is coming home tonight (we haven't seen him for 3 weeks). Doug and him are playing in the Member Tournament this weekend. Plus with school starting on Monday I really think he needs a few things. ;)

WFDT ~ I have no idea as the family is in charge of dinner tonight. I am sure whatever we have or do will be a blast.

Make it a great day my friends.

I'm glad I didn't read this before I went! :scared1:

Well, that root canal wasn't bad at all. Honestly, I'm doing well. I feel so much better without all of the pain I was having due to that tooth. Who knew it was so bad that a root canal would make me feel better?

Ooops! :flower3:

Glad it went okay. Tooth pain is the worse. Before my last one any time I drank or ate anything cold that tooth would absolutely kill me! :headache: And then I had just gotten information on a good dentist and the tooth broke.

It's funny because the first two weren't causing me pain they just "allegedly" had cavities too bad to fill. In that case I had the dentist from Hell and the best endontist in the world and this time I have a great dentist and the endontist was a *******. :rotfl:

You know I have missed a few birthday's lately so Happy Birthday to one and all! :rotfl: I see it on FB and can't post at that time and forget to go back later. :sad2:

Dinner last night was pretty good and yes I did make it to the store for rolls. :thumbsup2 I ended up just making roasted potatoes instead of the fries, it was faster, and used sweet potatoes and regular. The spice mix really went well on the sweet potatoes but I couldn't taste it on the regular ones.

I also sauted some yellow squash in olive oil and tossed it with salt and the African Spice Blend from TJ's.

Popping in to wish Ellen a very Happy Birthday! I hope your day has been wonderful so far and continues to be wonderful!

Ellen - Happy Birthday!

Jen – I also remember how much better I felt after the root canal. The tooth pain prior to it is the worst part, I’m glad yours went well!

Uncle R – Until your FIL comes and gives you the scoop on the authentic SOS, yours will be the official one on this thread!:laughing:

UncleR is very honored. :lmao:

Okay, am I the only one that doesn't know what SOS is? though I do know biscuits and gravy and am pretty darn good at making it.

SOS literally translates to "crap on a shingle"...but substitute a naughty word for crap. :teeth:

So glad that you're feeling better. And yes, root canal (with the right dentist) can do that for you.

SOS??? I'll need a translation.

DH had another vertigo and nausea spell today; so I rushed home from work. Turns out the doctor suspects he might have meniere's disease. DH is booked in for an MRI next week just to eliminate other possibilities. He's not having a good winter this year....

See above for SOS translation. ;)

Ugh. Meniere's diseases. My degree is actually in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. I've had several clients with Meniere's. Please let me know if you need anything and I am sending good thoughts to your hubby and you. :hug:

I have a long overdue hair appointment today. My hair hasn't been this long in decades!

I had enough points on my coke rewards to cash in another restaurant.com certificate so we'll be dining out tonight!

Yay for new hair!!! :cool1:

Ooops! :flower3:

I feel like me again. I think between the surgery and my tooth I haven't been feeling well for almost a month now. Well, guess what? With that tooth gone, I'm like a new woman! :lmao:

And you're right, tooth pain is the worst! The lady in the cubicle next to me at the dentist yesterday was having difficulty with her crown after her root canal. She was describing her pain level while I was in the middle of my root canal and she scared me to death. She kept saying how hers was worse than child birth! :scared1: So, there I am, with the dentist wrist-deep in my mouth waiting for the searing pain. Thank goodness it never came!!! :goodvibes

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's the weekend!!! I made it through my first week of work. And I'm doing better than I was at the beginning of the week! Although I had meetings for 7/8 hours today. I was bored and my patoot hurt by the end of the day after all of that chair sitting. :rotfl2:
We went out to dinner tonight to celebrate my birthday as a family. UncleR and I will go out in a few weeks to have our day. We're waiting until I'm 100% again. :)
I get to sleep late in the morning!!!! :cool1:
Hope everyone has a great weekend!
And to Ellen:
Every girl needs a birthday boa. Pink, my dear, always pink...
Yummy, it's a party!
Just what I need. I lost my daggone car key and I have one of those stupid electronic keys. :headache: I have not a blessed clue what I did with them and am hoping I left them either at the deli place next to my office or the post office, both of which were closed by the time I discovered them missing.
Got home and called the dealership, the dingbat on the phone told me I would probably have to bring the van in. Um, if I don't have keys and can't open, much less drive the van, how in the you know what am I supposed to get the van there! :confused:
I have too much to do this weekend and don't have time for this! :mad:
Whoooooo Hooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:woohoo:
Just saw that I had a message on the answering machine. It was a lady from the Library. Someone from our front desk at work called about some "items" I left there! IT'S MY KEYS!!!!!!! :banana:They called them because I have a Library key tag on there!
Tomorrow when the man calls from the dealership I am going to see how to get a second one made. :rolleyes1
And the Ravens won too! :rotfl:
