The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Glynis - Any news on Dad?

The dancer in me is coming out, I'm watching DWTS and now I realize why I watch this show. I love watching progression in the dancers and there's quite a few of them who have a lot of potential. Guess I'm sticking with it just to watch the progress!:goodvibes

I was hoping Gretchen had posted something by now...

We watched... but I'm not taken with anyone so far. It's a time sucker, esp when so many other great shows are on, so it may get cut from the DVR. I need more space!

I spent the day out of town at a meeting ~ it's with dear friends so it's a good way to spend a rainy yucky day. Fall has arrived in TX - it's only about 72 outside! I may actually put out my fall decor tonight.

We are having jambalaya (shrimp/chicken/sausage), and I'm making cheddar bay biscuits - knock off from Red Lobster.

I'm with you on the DVR - I think we need another one at this point! How nice that you are having fall weather. I came home yesterday and one of the houses in our neighborhood has their halloween decorations up. I'm not decorating until I can so it without breaking into a sweat :lmao:

Lauri- thanks for the Black bean recipe, it looks terrific! I am craving comfort food lately and while it is so not on my diet I really want it!

Welby just called and she is out for the week with strep throat. I am so glad I took that antibiotic, I am way better today! The baby is totally fine and was bellowing at her all day yesterday. They stopped in and she was on fire!

I have two banana breads in the oven right now. They look more like banana cakes so we'll see how they are. If they are good I'll post the recipe.

I understand the comfort food thing. Two weekends ago my comfort food craving was so bad that I made a pot of meatballs and sauce, as well as a big pot of chicken gumbo.

I'm sorry Welby is sick. Your house must be really quiet without Nola.

Banana cake with butter and sour cream. I definitely want that recipe!!

No news, yet. He had the scan in his home town, but it had to be sent to the cancer doctor in another town to be read. He has another, different scan tomorrow that will also be sent to the doctor, so he's not anticipating any results before Friday. I talked to him today, and he's in good spirits. I'm feeling much better today, too. I spent last night in prayer, and I have a really good feeling. Whatever happens, we'll fight it head on!

Sheryl- your food porn is always gorgeous! I have to tell you that the pic of Alexis was my favorite though :cloud9: I would not be able to deny her the ice cream either. Kady got a bit carried away with the goodies once she was able to have them so Marisa told her she could have 1 snack a day, her choice when and what. Her Pa, (who was pointing out that she was getting round, BTW), is appalled that she cannot have her ice cream, doughnuts and treats whenever he offers them :lmao:

Robin- I love Greek yogurt! I found a recipe to make my own but it looks time consuming. It looks easy and very inexpensive though so I may give it a try.

Now how did I know you'd like that pic best?! Thanks for the food compliments! Darn it, I forgot to ask Chris if they weighed her at the dr! I really think she needs to put on a few lbs, so I'm not denying the ice cream right now.

I'd like to try making the greek yogurt, it's so expensive. I'm sorry Welby is feeling so bad, but I'm glad you & the little one are doing better!

Nan I made your lentil soup today!! It rocks! :worship: Thanks for posting it. I hardly Nanatized it at all. I used boxed chicken broth, no meat & followed the rest of your tips. I added a little more cumin & pepper, because that cajun man that comes to dinner every night likes it spicy! I'll post food pic tomorrow. I made naan too!

Glynis – I watched DWTS last night and will tune in tonight but this group is not exciting me at all. I love Donny and the Iron Chef guy has potential but there are so many other programs on TV I may not stick with DWTS this season.

Sheryl - I’m hoping Alexis’ post op appt goes well today.:goodvibes

Nancy – Glad to hear you’re feeling better. I love the way banana bread makes the house smell.:cloud9:

It certainly doesn't feel like the first day of fall down here, hot, sticky, humid and raining.

I'm hooked on DWTS already! I don't know if y'all have watched tonight's show yet, but a couple of these girls are going to be awesome!

The dr said she looks good! :goodvibes He says that it's normal for her to continue to have an upset tummy, gas & some vomiting for a few more weeks. That it takes time for everything to start functioning properly.

Buddy's Dr told him not to use anything but Dove soup so for the past thre years that is all I have in the house. I do buy the scented bars but I have not had dry skin since. My house does smell good! I think I like this one. I tried it before it cooled so after dinner I will have a little more and then post it if the flavor develops. The banana is subtle, I am just not sure about the density, it called for 2 sticks of butter and 1 1/2 cps of sour cream :dance3:

Thanks, I'll go buy some dove! 2 sticks of butter & all that sour cream!!! Oh that has got to be good.

Hey all! Quick fly by to let you know that I am alive! Been working in the kitchen most of the day to get in all ready to stage...which translates to hardly anything on the counters so I had to clean the pantry to make room for it all.

Mom is doing good.

Glad that you're Mom is doing well & that you've got everything under control!

I feel the same way, Kathy! I will probably tune in on the results nights only, just to see how Donny is doing. And that will be that! It's amazing to think that he's a grandfather! He certainly doesn't look it! I hope I look that good when I'm a grandmother!

I'm with Aimee & the DVR! It's funny how we NEED all of this new technology. How did we manage?!

I'm so glad that you are feeling better about it. Prayers are ongoing for him!

Speaking of technology... I'm lying in bed with my new teeny little notebook computer DH bought for me! It really is the size of a notebook AND it's pink with a cute pink case!!! My hubby is so sweet sometimes!

I watched Hells kitchen and Good wife last night. I almost felt sorry for Chef Ramsey. I missed the 2nd half though cause I was flipping between channels. I really need to set my DVR.

Nancy I hope Welby is feeling better. There is nothing worse than feeling bad when you have an active little one.

Well as usual the morning got away from me so I will be back later.

Prayers continue. I'm glad you have a good feeling, that's a good sign!

I want one of those so bad!!!!!:thumbsup2

I watched Hells kitchen and Good wife last night. I almost felt sorry for Chef Ramsey. I missed the 2nd half though cause I was flipping between channels. I really need to set my DVR.

I taped both of them. How was The Good Wife?

WFD - Oven swiss omelet, hash brown potatoes and biscuits. bbl......

Morning. Happy Hump Day! I really need to get moving this morning. My allergies have turned into a cold and so I'm dragging again. But I'm the wednesday helper in Emma's class, so I've got to get moving. Can't disappoint a room full of 5 and 6 year olds!

WFD is going to be chicken enchiladas. It's a new recipe--not terribly involved, but we'll see how it goes.

Tom had a farewell lunch and then a dinner tonight and then happy hour tomorrow...I guess they liked him there.

:thumbsup2

Tonight will probably be just a salad for me since Alex will be by his dad. Alex is pretty grubbly tonight I am glad he won't be grubbly here insert evil laugh:laughing:

:lmao:

I really LOVE Hell’s Kitchen and I’m having to tape that to watch DWTS.

I love HK!

I'm with you on the DVR - I think we need another one at this point! How nice that you are having fall weather. I came home yesterday and one of the houses in our neighborhood has their halloween decorations up.

We have two :happytv::happytv: Buddy loves his TV land and the military channel and the history channel and Nat geo. I love reality TV. He hates it! So I watch Lucy, Archie, Three's Company and Cosby with him in the LR. Then he strolls down to the bedroom and watches them all over again:lmao: while I catch up on Survivor, Flipping Out,..... We have a deal, he does not complain about the Cable bill and I don't delete Andy Griffith :rotfl2:

No news, yet. I'm feeling much better today, too. I spent last night in prayer, and I have a really good feeling. Whatever happens, we'll fight it head on!

That's a good sign, GLynis. When my SIS IL Janice was diagnosed with breast cancer foor the second time it seemed like the end of the world somehow I "knew" she would be okay. I cannot explain it, I just knew. She is cancer free for 15 years now :goodvibes Trust your gut and we'll keep praying, you know....just because :thumbsup2

Now how did I know you'd like that pic best?! Thanks for the food compliments! Darn it, I forgot to ask Chris if they weighed her at the dr! I really think she needs to put on a few lbs, so I'm not denying the ice cream right now.

I would offer Alexis some ice cream, she has been through so much, poor baby.

I love thinking about your spicy guy tweaking your meals! Buddy would love your food, when we order Chinese we have to order from teh spicy side adn ask the Chef to not spare the horses:eek:

I think I am going to try the yogurt but I need to figure out how to strain it withour orderingthat fancy strainer that is recommended. I may need to use cheesecloth at first. I don't want to invest in a tool that I may never use again if I don't like how this comes out.

I watched Hells kitchen and Good wife last night. I almost felt sorry for Chef Ramsey. I missed the 2nd half though cause I was flipping between channels. I really need to set my DVR.

I was :sad2: at those wanna be's! Holy Smokes, they are so busy stabbign each other in the back they are forgetting that they need to work together.

Well, I am not sure about the banana bread. I made two and Buddy brought one to work today. The original recipe did not call for salt, vanilla, cinamon or nutmeg. I followed the first exactly and unless the flavor improves overnight it was not worth the ingredients or the calories. The second I added somesalt and vanilla, we'll see if that helps. I did had chocolate chips to both.

I am making vegetarian chili for my WW food swap tonight. My niece is a vegetarian so I am not putting any meat in it. It will be my dinner and Buddy will have the leftover pork chops along with a baked potato and veg tonight.

Good morning!

Glynis, I am glad you have a good feeling about your Dad. I believe in intuition.

Sheryl, I am considering getting a laptop--just for photo storage and when we are traveling. You'll have to let me know how you like your new hot pink one! :)

Stephanie, if the enchiladas are good, can you post the recipe? I've been craving enchiladas lately for some reason. I think I have all of the ingredients I would need too.

Dinner last night ended up just being a panini--it had leftover grilled chicken, bacon, avocado, tomato, onion, and arugula. I took pics but was too tired to upload. We just vegged on the couch and watched Dancing with the Stars. I missed the men the other night since I was at U2, but some of the ladies seem to have good potential, especially the model, the swimmer, and Kelly Osbourne.

I felt a little guilty about skipping the So You Think You Can Dance tour last night, but I am feeling back to normal today, so I guess I needed the rest and extra sleep!

It's supposed to be in the 80s here today, so I am hoping to grill something for dinner.

Today the bread was better. I wonder how Buddy's was, it had the cvanilla and a little salt added. Both had chocolate chips.

Good morning,

I am doing a real quick fly by for now. I will read back later, but I wanted to post dinner real quick and a quick note for now.

It is raining againg here this morning. Ok - ENOUGH!! I love rainy weather for a bit - makes me feel all cozy - but now I am getting cranky! :rolleyes1 I need me my sunshine real soon. Tonight is church night and the church will be a buzzing with a lot of kids with a lot of pent up excitement. Oh My!! :scared1:

Tonight was supposed to be date night. But when I went out last night to grill the Chicken Kabobs we had ran out of gas. As I was coming into the house Elizabeth called and asked what was for dinner. I told her about my troubles and she offered to take us out to our favorite Mexican place. Who am I to argue with that!

So as long as Doug remembers to get the tank filled, last night dinner will be tonight ----- Chicken Kabobs, parsley/buttered noodles and an aspic salad.

I will BBL!

Sheryl -- Has Alexis been tested for food allergies? Liam used to get eczema really bad when he was younger. When we had to go to the allergist because of his shellfish allergy, the doctor told us that his egg allergy was probably causing the eczema. At the time, he was still eating things that had eggs in them, like waffles, because he didn't seem to have any adverse reaction. Well, ever since we cut out the eggs completely, he almost never gets eczema.

We use the unscented Dove soap here too, as well as scent and dye-free laundry detergent.

Kathy -- I hope Kyle does well today!

Glynis -- I'm glad you're feeling better about your dad.

Nancy -- Cheesecloth should work fine for the yogurt.

Lauren -- I'm glad the company is showing Tom how much they appreciated him. Good luck getting the house together for the realtor!

Stephanie -- I hope you feel better.

Janice -- I missed the end of HK too because I fell asleep.

I was really feeling the punishment of staying out late for the concerts this morning. I thought about going back to bed after getting the kids on the bus, but I dragged myself to my regular Wednesday zumba class instead. Has anyone tried that? It's fun. Anyway, I am glad I went. I feel a lot better.

This afternoon the kids have gymnastics and then Liam has Curriculum Night at the school. I'm making the kids sandwiches for the car, and I'll eat when we get home.

Speaking of technology... I'm lying in bed with my new teeny little notebook computer DH bought for me! It really is the size of a notebook AND it's pink with a cute pink case!!! My hubby is so sweet sometimes!

I love those tiny notebook computers! When we bought DH one, I tried to get him to go for a tiny pink one but it was a no-go  We don't even own a desktop anymore and don't miss it at all!! I see no merit in them anymore

I had my 2nd iron infusion this morning, went okay though the Benadryl combined with overcast cool weather completely knocked me out. I stopped at Starbucks on my way into the office for a pick me up. Let's hope it works! I am only in the office 2 days this week and have TONS to get done. No time for naps!

Tonight is typical Wed church night, though DH has a meeting here so we may run and get some fast food before activities start. Otherwise, I will get something on my way home tonight.

Can y'all pray for my momma? :flower3:I don't want to share too much on a public thread but we had a long talk last night and she's having to make some major decisions about her future that will affect her greatly, and could potentially affect us greatly. The tourism market is just not improving yet...

Those little computers look perfect for me and all I really need, but since my giant desktop works just fine, I can't really justify getting one. I'd love some deskspace though.

Aimee- I'm sorry your mom is having a tough time. I know alot of business' around here had a very difficult summer. It's good your mom is able to talk to you about it, I'm sure she'll make the right choice for her.

Laura- What is zumba? My mom would always say "get up and get moving, you'll feel better." Don't tell her she was right. Curriculum night sounds so fancy, we have open house tomorrow night.

Ellen- I don't know what it is a buttered egg noodles, but I love them.

Nancy- So I see the bread has two sticks of butter, but that's not enough, your supposed to serve it with butter too! That bread had better be tasty. I'll post my favorite banana bread later, it's easy too.

Stephanie- I'd love the enchilada recipe, we've just discovered them but I'd like something other than the old el paso kit you buy at the store.

Sheryl- My dad had an upset stomach for a while after his appendix burst. He also had the appendix fluid leak into him. That was in June and honestly, by August I forgot anything had happened to him. I'm sorry she doesn't feel 100% yet, but it's nice to know that it's normal.

bbq chicken sandwiches for dinner. It feels like a summer day so I thought we should have a summer dinner. I'm sure there won't be to many more. Now I just need to decide between carmalized onions or raw onions. Such choices. See you all later.

My work computer is down and I have too much to do! :headache:

As usual not sure what is for dinner tonight, I need to make a schedule and stick to it.

I have a lot to do tonight and tomorrow night, going to my sisters for the weekend and I have a football game Friday night and I am heading to her house from there. My sis is going away on a Scrapbooking Girl's Weekend and I am going to help my BIL get the girls to all their activities. They have pictures and games Saturday and on Sunday I am going on a stalking mission. :rolleyes1

Paula Dean is going to be at a Wegmans in VA and I am going to see if I can "see" her. They gave out tickets for it but my sister didn't get any, someone at the store told her that they weren't needed but actually are. We are thinking she is going to be in the upstairs seating area and I am hoping if so that she is sitting where she can be seen from downstairs.

Prayers are being said for your Dad. Him bing in good spirits is half the battle in my opinion. Please check in when you can.

Robin ~ buttered egg noodles are just plain ol noodles with parsley and butter on them - no sauce what so ever.

Marilyn ~ have a great weekend. Elizabeth is going on an all girls scrapbooking weekend also. I hope your sister has fun - I don't see the facination but a lot of people do.

Aimee ~ Prayers for Mom. These sound like tough decisions. Prayers to know the way to go.

Nancy ~ your bread looked delicious. I never have good luck with Banana bread.

Kat ~ GOOD LUCK KYLE :cheer2::yay::woohoo::cool1: Let us know how today went. Please!!

Ok with all of the smilies I completely lost my train of thought. Please know you are all thought of each day.

Steph – Sorry it turned into a cold, hoping you feel better soon!

Becky – I’ve been craving Mexican food as well, may have to go out for some this weekend!

Ellen – Now you’re talking about Mexican food, too funny!!!! Nothing more fun than cooped up kiddos with tons of pent up excitement:scared1:…..sounds like cocktail time!

Laura – Thanks for the well wishes for my boy! I’m pretty nervous, but in all honesty, I’m pretty sure this is probably the end of the road for him. It may be a blessing as I'm really worried about him, he told me yesterday he's never been as stressed out as he is now. I couldn’t be more proud of what he's accomplished!:goodvibes What is zumba??????

Aimee – Prayers for your Momma and your entire family.:grouphug:

Marilyn – Good luck seeing Paula, I’d love to meet her!:goodvibes

My mom would always say "get up and get moving, you'll feel better." Don't tell her she was right.

Mums the word. ;)

Can y'all pray for my momma? :flower3:I don't want to share too much on a public thread but we had a long talk last night and she's having to make some major decisions about her future that will affect her greatly, and could potentially affect us greatly.

Prayers that she will make the right choices to difficult decisions.

Paula Dean is going to be at a Wegmans in VA and I am going to see if I can "see" her.

Good luck!

Kathy -- No matter what happens, Kyle should be proud of what he has accomplished. I wish him well. College can be stressful at times. Hopefully, he is able to have some fun as well.

Caili's skating coach introduced me to zumba. It is a dance/exercise class that draws steps from Latin ballroom dances, hip-hop, and tribal music. It's really fun, and you don't have to be a dancer to do it (although it is easier to pick up the choreography if you already know the basic steps...not necessary, but easier.) The important thing is to keep moving.

Hi, everyone!

Prayers to Aimee's mom! I hope that the best possible outcome happens for y'all!

Kathy - Hugs and best wishes to Kyle. I know he loves baseball, but if it's too stressful, maybe it's best to end it now. Whatever he wants, is what I want for him!

Nancy - How is Nola today?

Dinner tonight is a new recipe for asian meatballs. I'll serve them with some brown rice and maybe an asian slaw. Haven't decided that part, yet. We'll see what I can come up with.

Nancy, I was about to tell you what an awesome photo you took of your banana bread, but then I realized it's a copied photo from the Pioneer Woman's website! I LOVE her site and read it every day. Did you see her post on Welsh Rarebit today? I love that dish, and now I am craving it! John hates it though so I am going to have to wait until a night he is out to make it. It's one of those meals I made too many times and he got sick of it permanently.

Aimee, I hope everything works out OK for your Mom.

Kathy, good luck to Kyle!

I don't think I am going to get home before the sun goes down so no grilling after all. Right now I am thinking of pasta with shiitake mushrooms, corn, arugula, and cherry tomatoes.
