The Vatican Has Updated the Seven Deadly Sins

It is the blood of Christ. If you do not believe it then you are not to take communion in the Catholic Church.

Nope. Still wine. Belief does not change its nature, anymore than belief can enable you to walk through a wall.

But I'm not trying to make this a thread about Catholic Communion. Just thought the linked article was interesting.

We had a great discussion about this in my theology class last night with a Dominican Father.
I'm happy to know I've committed less of these mortal sins ;) As far as the old mortal sins, I was told if one confesses them and repents, then they are forgiven.

I think mickeyfan is trying to point out that the Catholic Church doesn't consider Communion wine to be a drug, because it is not considered to be wine.

Just making sure I have this right, you can't go to heaven if you've committed a mortal sin? Sorry for my ignorance.

No no no. You can go to heaven if you kill thy neighbor, but only if you drink black milk. And recycle. You have to recycle.

I admire your faith.

 I can take no credit for it. When this scandal broke, I was angry, I felt betrayed and I didn't even know anyone directly affected!! I can't imagine how people felt who were impacted more directly.

Anyway, there was a wonderful Priest here in NJ who did so much to help heal not only the survivors, but everyone who was affected by this. He was the one that helped me remember that God didn't do this. Evil men did this and we can't blame God for that.

There are still a lot of things I love about the Catholic church-my education brings wonderful memories, the smell of incense, the ringing of the bells, the Latin chant...it's all beautiful to me. I love the commitment to social justice and the work done by so many good people for the poor.

Like any other organization we've got our share of hypocrites. All I can do is pray every day that I'm not one of them.

So would every Catholic I've ever come in contact with-including the good Priests I have had the pleasure to know.

The only way I was able to stay in the Church was knowing that the good and holy Priests outnumbered the bad, and that the acts of men, no matter how evil, do not change the goodness of God.

No, there are not more good than bad .. maying priests that serve parishes, yes, but not once you go "higher up" the chain, all knew how to cover up, were told to by their "higher ups", so on and so forth ...

You have said it very well, thank you. :)

Polluting, genetic engineering, obscene riches, taking drugs, abortion, pedophilia and causing social injustice join the original seven deadly sins defined by Pope Gregory the Great in the sixth century: pride, envy, gluttony, greed, lust, wrath and sloth.

Polluting would have been covered by sloth.
Genetic Engineering by pride.
Obscene riches by gluttony and/or greed.
Taking drugs by gluttony.
Abortion...lust?
Pedophilia by lust.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: The "memories" this brings back, should make me shudder, but thankfully I can now laugh instead.

I only know the ones that I've been in parishes with, stood on soup kitchen serving lines with, helped build homes for the poor with, helped hand out food at the pantry with...I don't know any Cardinals so I can't talk about them. They'll have their own judgement day, it's not for me.

I too admire your faith. May I ask, how do you reconcile that the Pope himself has always been in on all of this?

They don't seem like they've changed much. I put mimery in the suggestion box. You see how far that went. The whole thing is political.

Considering the Catholic Church gives out small dosages of drugs at every single Mass (umm...wine does contain alcohol, right?), you'd think they'd want to be a little more specific about that one, at least. :lmao:

:scared1: :sad2: The wine is the blood of Christ, not a drug.

Not in a long, long time. ;)

As Fits mentioned, I think the idea was to get people thinking about how their "sins" affect others.

No...it's wine. No magic tricks involved. I've tasted wine, and I've tasted the "blood of christ"...which is remarkably like a pretty bad merlot. :teeth:

:sad2: :sad2:

I am not entirely happy with the genetic engineering one - i think what they mean is cloning, but i personally am all for stem cell research using cord blood, adult stem cells, and discarded embryos (that the parents knowingly donate). that is genetic engineering, but as someone with a genetic disease, stem cells could one day fix me! honestly i am all for research that may keep me out of a wheelchair! if the catholic church is now formally against all stem cell research (i understand embyonic stem cell research being against the church), then i will have to disagree...

The Pope is a man, and thus subject to the same inclinations to sin that any other human being is. He's also subject to God's judgement just the same as any other human being.

I don't worship the Pope. I'm reading his book on Christ, and as a theological work it's very good. Other than that, he doesn't affect my day to day Christian walk that much.

Only for those of us who believe. For those who don't-it's wine. I don't particularly enjoy being mocked for my choice to believe, since I don't mock others for choosing not to-but I can only control my reactions to such things.

I've only ever heard embryonic as being an issue-not cord blood, or adult cells.

I am not mocking anyone. When WVRevy said the blood of christ is a bad merlot, that is mocking people who believe! I don't know why you picked me out, I happen to be Catholic and I do believe.
