The Running Thread--2024

July 2024 Totals
Running Distance: 151.8 miles
Running Time: 25:22:41
Traditional Strength Training Time: 15:46:07
Core Training: ? Does anyone who uses a Garmin know how to do a separate Core workout for tracking purposes?
Pilates: 5:09:50
Yoga: 2:39:17
Elliptical: 0:15:38->There's only so much time in the day, so something had to give. Bye-bye Elliptical training.
Plyometrics: 1:15:15->I've been slacking on doing Plyo work and I KNOW that it's greatly beneficial to helping with your running economy. To be frank, I've probably just been lazy. Nonetheless, I have been trying to balance doing more while increasing my miles with the concern of getting an overuse injury in the back of my head.

July Running:
Total Distance: 83 miles
Average Pace: 11:08/mi

Mileage picking up a little. I'll start training for the WDW Marathon after running the Philly 10k end of August.
I've been slowly building up the weights in my meager strength training routine, but watching the Olympics makes me deeply ashamed of my arms :( They are better than they used to be though! Still stuck on "girl-style" pushups but I can do a lot more of them.

It is pretty amazing to watch! If anybody watched Malcom in the Middle in the 90s, there's a fabulous episode where his dad Hal (the hilarious Bryan Cranston) gets into race walking at a local park. HIGHLY recommend looking it up on Hulu.

I like the fan theory that Malcom in the Middle and Breaking Bad are part of a shared universe, in that Walter White entered the witness protection program and became Hal.

Arms are just arms. 😉

I do mostly “girl pushups” so I try to focus on getting more range of motion on them than I can with “normal” pushups. I’ve also seen a recommendation to do normal pushups just with your hands elevated to get more of the plank benefits, but using like a bench or something instead of the floor.

My push-ups massively improved when I stopped doing knee-push-ups and switched to incline push-ups. (Do you mean knee push-ups when you say girl-style?) For incline push-ups I use a weight bench, but you could also use a counter or a coffee table. As the table/bench gets closer to the ground the push-up gets harder and it's prepping you to be on the floor.
Also I think palm placement and arm angle really makes a difference. You should not be making a T with your arms/body, tuck your elbows diagonally behind you.
My final tip is start in high push-up position on the floor, lower down in a slow controlled manner, and then put your knees down briefly for the pushing up part, then you lift your knees ff the ground and start again.
Hope that helps! Push-ups are badass. You got this!

Ha! Yes "girl pushups" are the ones on your knees. Very "child of the seventies" term i'm sure.
I see demonstrations of the incline pushups but I can't get past the mental image of me actually pushing the furniture away from me and falling on my face instead of pushing my body away from the furniture. I'll bet stairs would work though.

Yes, stairs work and have a built in way to progress!
I put the bench or table in front of a wall (or a pole in my basement) to make sure it won't slide on the floor while I'm pushing.

July total- 29.87. We were on vacation for two weeks though. I did a lot hiking and walking while away but didn't formally track anything.

Trying to do a streak for August again like I did in June to keep the base fitness up. Will start dedicated half training for MW in October or late September.

July Total
11.69 miles

Yeah, life pretty much sucks this month. I’m hoping August will get better.
Oh yes. July totals. Get ready to be impressed. :rotfl2:

10.4mi
5:16:00 of weights (but that number is low since I couldn't locate my watch charger for a few days)
I normally don't play the monthly total game, but I'm inspired by @Herding_Cats to do so, just so you don't feel alone.

15.6 miles
95 minutes active strength training
